Nobody gives a fuck about the deficit
Except for weirdo GOP members of congress, the debt isn’t an important issue.
…And when the Times/Sienna poll asked midterm voters to name the most important problem facing America, only one of the survey’s 1,641 respondents mentioned the debt, the deficit, or federal spending.
One fucking person out of 1,641. As Eschaton’s Duncan Black notes, the new generation of GOP weirdo is too busy Owning The Libs to keep trying to convince people that the deficit is going to kill them.

I remember when Jimmy Carter “exploded the deficit” to 40 billion dollars, oh the weeping and the wailing from you know who. Reagan came along and showed ’em how it’s done raising the deficit to 400 billion, which in turn spurred a tax increase or two. The absolute worst part of the Reagan Era was the politicians realized they could do as they liked and “Deficits don’t matter” (The aptly named Dick Cheney?). This game will not stop in our lifetime.
