DL Open Thread Monday April 17 2023

LARGE Numbers are being written on legal pads and being pushed back and forth in some Conference Room somewhere in Wilmington.

Dominion Voting Systems’ high-stakes defamation trial against Fox News, which was supposed to begin Monday, was abruptly delayed on Sunday evening, in a stunning eleventh-hour twist that threw into question whether a settlement was in the works.

Opening statements were expected on Monday, but the Delaware Superior Court said in a surprise announcement that “the start of the trial” will now be Tuesday.

The judge’s statement did not provide an explanation for the delay.

Heck of a job Coonsie!

Only I have the guts to keep boring people with the fact that Senator Chris Coons was instrumental in helping Trump rush a record 234 judges onto the bench.

The total number of Trump Article III judgeship nominees to be confirmed by the United States Senate was 234, including three associate justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, 54 judges for the United States courts of appeals, 174 judges for the United States district courts, and three judges for the United States Court of International Trade.

How many seats are there in the British Parliament?   I have to google that because this headline sounds startling.

Cabinet Minister Greg Hands made the startling admission three weeks before voters go to the polls in ballots widely expected to give the Conservatives a kicking

 …

Greg Hands, the UK Conservative chair, has warned that his party is expected to lose more than 1,000 seats at the local elections on May 4.

“The independent expectations are that the Conservatives will lose more than 1,000 seats,” Hands said in an interview with Sky News on Sunday. “Labour need to make big gains, that is the expectation out there.”

The governing Conservative party have gained ground on the Labour opposition in recent national opinion polls, though they still trail by a double-digit margin. The local elections will see 8,000 council seats contested in England next month.

Oh, it is local seats, so I guess borough councils or whatever.  Still, 1000 is many.

The failure is that of the electorate, we needed an informed group of voters and what we got is the equivalent of over grown toddlers. Do people really support and approve of Coons? Not really, will they rise up and flush the little clown? Nope, not in this state, if that was the case Carper would have been in a rest home long ago. Carper and Coons are the DINOS we can never seem to be rid of here, it’s a reminder that big money wins, and the rest of us lose. But did not have to.

I do not want a dominion settlement. This trial and depositions and testimony need to be out in the sun. A settlement is a huge loss

You might not want the settlement, but Dominion is a business. It can take the money and run. As a dollars and cents move, that’s safer than betting on convincing the jury AND securing a massive damages award.
Fox, given the judge’s pretrial rulings, may be more than willing to overpay in a settlement than put its clowns on a stage where they would be the questioned rather than the softballing questioners.
Paying off Dominion would in no way be a win for Fox. Given the massive amount of negative material in the depositions, the best Fox can do at this point is to control its losses — both to its coffers and in the court of public opinion.

Have to agree with mediawatch. Arthur, I hear you, but the sad truth is that no amount of sun or fresh air or bleach will penetrate the vile miasma surrounding the brains of magats and Fox News viewers.

I don’t know how anyone could pretend to be objective and make the jury. Whether you are a Fox News viewer or Anti-viewer, you have to be one or the other. Nobody is in the “I watch Fox News every once in a while – no strong opinions on it.” category.

Fearing that the “Did you hear about the Settlement” bit on the Bunker has manifested itself into existence

LOL. The invisible hand of the markets.
