Song of the Day 7/31: The Marvellettes, “The Hunter Gets Captured By the Game”

A nod to the Republican Party’s big new obsession, which is the same as its big old obsession.

In 1967 the Marvellettes were still enjoying their comeback when this Smokey Robinson composition became their penultimate Top 40 hit. It reached No. 13 on the Hot 100, and No. 2 on the R&B chart.

Grace Jones redid the tune in 1980 on her “Warm Leatherette” LP. That album was supposed to move the imposing singer/model away from her disco image, but this version was made for the dance floor.

  1. One of my fave under-the-radar Motown songs. Had to be a Smokey song as you can almost hear him singing it as you listen.

    BTW, here is a TERRIBLE (IMO) list of Motown’s greatest songs. Way too many post-Motown Motown songs. Yeah, it’s clickbait, and I clicked.
