Val Longhurst–Anti-Semitic Legislator AND Scofflaw Violator Of State Law

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on November 29, 2023

Both on behalf of Bethany Hall-Long.

We’ve already established that Longhurst urged legislators to back BHL because, at least in part, Matt Meyer was part of some ‘Jewish cult’, apparently because Alan Levin is supposedly supporting him.  A quick look at any of BHL’s campaign finance reports, original or ‘amended’, reveal plenty of Jewish donors.  Meaning, in fairness, the anti-Semitism is on Val’s part, not BHL’s.  And yes, Val, more than one legislator has confirmed that you said it.

Here’s the one that perhaps you don’t know.  When BHL suspended her campaign, the Speaker called an emergency caucus.  Val Longhurst is now the Speaker.  She instructed her Chief of Staff to send out a memo to all the Caucus members, which was dutifully done.  Here is the message:

Hi All,

We will have a caucus meeting tonight via Zoom at 9 pm this evening.  We plan to discuss the statement Bethany is releasing this evening.  I am providing the Zoom link below.

The e-mail was sent on Thursday, September 28 at 4:04 pm.  What happened that day?  Here’s what happened that day:

Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, who is running for Delaware governor in 2024, announced Thursday evening that she is conducting an audit of her past campaign finance reports after possible issues have come to light.

Hall-Long said in a written statement this audit came after she “requested a review of my past campaign finance reports and learned there may have been reporting issues that require attention.”

She said she is working with “independent campaign finance experts and forensic accountants to thoroughly audit the finances.” She released a statement after “friends and constituents have asked about the status of my campaign.”

The candidate has canceled two fundraisers in recent weeks, according to emails obtained by Delaware Online/The News Journal. One of these was supposed to be hosted this month by Gov. John Carney, who quickly endorsed her when she announced her candidacy.

It’s not immediately clear if her campaign is suspended and if she is currently taking donations. She has not posted on her campaign Facebook page since Sept. 15.

You may be asking, ‘what’s the big deal’?

The answer is that Longhurst had this e-mail sent out via state e-mail.  It is expressly forbidden to use state e-mail for political purposes. This isn’t even a borderline case.  Longhurst was trying to keep her caucus in line, at least those who were supporting BHL.

Not only has Longhurst voiced anti-Semitic views, she has already improperly used her office for political purposes.

Were there enough people in that caucus brave enough to challenge her leadership, she’d already be gone.  There aren’t.  Which is why 2024 is so important.

Bethany Hall-Long’s clumsy half-assery combined with Longhurst’s aloof dumbshitery are pulling the back the curtain on the what has no doubt been business as usual for generations.

  2. It’s one thing to be corrupt. But corrupt incompetence could well threaten the long-standing Delaware Way casual corruption we’ve all had to live with.

One can only hope–and shine a light on what they’re doing.

  3. Arthur says:

I appreciate you constantly pointing out such malfeasance. However, as I stated about 45 yaers ago, wake me when someone is actually punished

  4. Beach Karen says:

I’m still wrapping my head around the “Jewish cult” comment. I’m no fan of Longhurst, and there’s a lot of smarmy things I would expect from her, but not that, it’s deeply disappointing. But let me be clear, if you say you have more than one source, I completely trust your reporting.

The concept of, “everyone does it,” outweighs any laws when it comes to our legislature, so don’t hold your breath for action on using the state email, which is again, deeply disappointing.

  5. FWIW says:

If this is accurate, then the problem is much bigger than just using her state email. It sounds like she asked her Chief of Staff, a state government employee, to spend his time and effort writing and sending this email. Also, it sounds like this virtual meeting was likely held on a Zoom account that’s paid for by the state.

Finally (and worst of all), it would be okay if legislators were voluntarily helping out with Bethany’s campaign on the side, without being pressured to do so. But if Val is using her government position as speaker to pressure and compel caucus members (and perhaps other state employees) to engage in non-governmental political activity that they may or may not want to do- that seems pretty problematic to me.

And if she’s calling it a “caucus meeting” (implying that it’s a meeting that the entire caucus is obligated to attend) when it fact it’s a political campaign meeting, it sounds like she’s doing exactly that.

    • There’s even more to the story than that. The person who they brought in as Chief Of Staff back in February has been completely immersed in BHL’s campaigns. Claims to even have run one of her campaigns for Lt. Governor.

      Here’s her LinkedIn:

Raising the question: Has Val tried to turn the House Democratic Caucus into a wholly-owned subsidiary of BHL’s campaign? If so, why?

Word on the street is that they previously didn’t like each other. And now this. I can only conclude that BHL has promised Val something big in exchange for trying to put her thumb on the scale. SOS, maybe? Chair of the River & Bay? Something where Val can pad her bank account, no doubt.

Oh, one more question: Didn’t this new COS fire a bunch of people when she came in? Gotta wonder, did they not pledge sufficient fealty to the Val/BHL tandem?

So far, more questions than answers, but certainly SOME answers.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

      • Alby says:

IIRC, Longhurst has no actual employment credentials that would qualify her for her lofty position. Correct me if I’m wrong.

        • Joe Connor says:

Look at the list of DRBA honchos:) Qualifications were never a criteria.

          • Exactly. All about political connections. Quite the choice plum positions. And you don’t even have to DO very much.

We’re talking about, among others, Tommy Cook, Mike Ratchford, Sam Lathem and, wait for it, Vince Meconi, among the current crew.

          • Alby says:

I was talking about her position as speaker. She has no qualifications for that.

  6. ADL says:

Has anyone filed an Ethics complaint against Rep Longhurst which would spur a formal investgation?

What say the local Synagogues and Jewish Community? Will there be a call for her resignation from the local faith based leaders?

Has anyone filed a complaint with the Anti-Defamation League??

VALERIE LONGHURST NEEDS TO RESIGN FROM THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY NOW

    • I think it fell below the radar. Hoping that will change.

It’s not her first ‘misstatement’. Remember when she called Melissa Minor-Brown ‘a colored woman’, and had to apologize?

      • Avi says:

Right. And then Minor brown just stood right behind her in exchange for her current position. It’s really disappointing and gross what some people are willing to do- and be degraded – by in exchange for a dumb job like that. A job where this racist is calling the shots.

And yes. Val is a racist. Say it louder for those in the back. In the year of our Lord 2023 if you’re saying colored and Jew cult then you’re a racist. And just dumb. She’s both. And for god sakes get that Botox needle out of whatever Kent county deer butcher that woman is going to.

        • Let’s stay away from the Botox references.

However, in addition to her racist utterings, she buries any legislation that even remotely holds police accountable. Because they got her her other job, and they own her.

Wouldn’t it be great if someone ran against her? If only…
