Song of the Day 1/16: Bob Marley and the Wailers, “Waiting in Vain”

H/t to Anon, who noted that we will wait in vain for any of the Republicans who are opposing Donald Trump to point out that he wants to be a dictator, I think because they’re afraid he’ll sic his slack-jawed minions on them. I can’t say I blame them.

Bob Marley released the tune on his “Exodus” album in 1977, the year after “Rastaman Vibration” introduced him to the U.S. charts. It didn’t chart in America – only two of his singles ever did – but it reached No. 27 in the UK.

Jazz guitarist Lee Ritenour released a version in 1993 that made the lower reaches of the R&B chart. Even with Maxi Priest on vocals it sounds smooth-jazzy.

The song returned to the UK singles chart in 1995 when Annie Lennox covered it for her album “Medusa.” It reached No. 31. You can tell Lennox has always been a rebel – that video was shot decades before Mickey Mouse entered the public domain.
