Song of the Day 5/10: Redd Kross, “Candy Coloured Catastrophe”

El Somnambulo left this one off his list of his favorite new tunes of April, maybe because he didn’t get a chance to hear it – it dropped April 29. Or maybe because he’s not a big fan of Redd Kross, formed as a punk band in Hawthorne, Calif., in the late ’70s by brothers Jeff and Steve McDonald but best known for their power-pop period in the late ’80s-early ’90s.

They’ve continued to release new music sporadically ever since, with a new album slated for release next month. They said they were inspired by watching Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary “Get Back,” and you can hear the usual echoes of the Fab Four in this single. That might explain the British spelling in the title, too.

  1. Had no idea they were still around. Really liked their first album, the one with the ‘homage’ to Linda Blair.

They were still Red Cross then. Their very name was an homage to “The Exorcist,” specifically the crucifix masturbation scene, but they de-punked ages ago.
