Song of the Day 2/26: Father John Misty, “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All”

Ever since it was released last summer, I’ve heard this song a lot on WXPN, a radio station Father John Misty has an interesting history with.

Misty, whose real name is Josh Tillman, played in 2016 at WXPN’s annual summer XPoNential music festival, and it happened to be the day after Donald Trump accepted the Republican presidential nomination. It prompted Misty, who was supposed to play a 50-minute set, to launch a tirade about how the country’s entertainment addiction made it stupid and led to Trump.

I always thought that it was going to look way more sophisticated than this when fucking evil happened. When the collective consciousness was so numb and so fucking sated and so gorged on entertainment… I expected a less cliche evil. And now it’s just this bad… it’s not even good writing. It’s not even a good narrative.

Even with a crowd sympathetic to his cause, this didn’t go over well, and he was ripped even harder on social media afterwards. So I’m glad XPN has been willing to let bygones be bygones, because I like the Dylanesque nature of the song.
