The Increasingly Less-Infrequent Delaware Political Weekly Which Still Doesn’t Appear Weekly: Late April 2025

1. Gotta lead with the upcoming school board elections.  If, for no other reason,  because thereby hangs a tale featuring arguably Delaware’s most-unqualified candidate for elective office.  The school board elections take place on Tuesday, May 13You can find out specifics about the races in your districts here.  Although I remain skeptical of their motives, I found the responses to the questionnaires over at the First State Educate site to be the most informative.  The candidates in their own words.  FWIW (one vote), I’ll be voting for Kenyon O. Wilson, Brian Jordan, and Frank Livoy on my Brandywine School District ballot.  I’ve been knocking doors for Brian, mainly because I like his platform, I need to get my steps in and, oh yes, did I mention something about Delaware’s most-unqualified candidate for public office?  Just happens to be Brian’s opponent.  You may have heard of her.  Check out from her very own campaign website her latest rationale for voting for her:

This morning, as I was getting ready to go door-knocking, excited to meet more neighbors across Brandywine, there was a knock at my own door.

Two of my neighbors had urgent news: around 4:00 a.m., two young men had broken into my car, right outside my home. Security footage caught them — hoods up, gloves on — moving quickly through the neighborhood while most of us slept.
Soon after, a New Castle County police officer arrived to take the report.
Standing there, I couldn’t help but think back to another morning — last Labor Day Eve — when my car was stolen from that very same spot. Found days later, damaged and abandoned just a mile away.
The young man charged was only 18. Last week, he appeared in court and was given probation.

Two incidents.

Two reminders that even in neighborhoods we cherish, challenges are growing — and we must come together to meet them.

Ho-kay.  So, if she is to be believed (there’s a first time for everything), we should vote for her because her car was stolen from the exact same spot twice.  Presumably because we need someone on the Brandywine School Board without the presence of mind (I could stop right there) to take precautions after her car was stolen the first time.  You know, like locking it.

2. Shané Darby Is IN!

Kids, I need help (said Captain Obvious).  I’m apparently the only person who doesn’t know how to put an accent aigu over the ‘e’ in Sha-nay’s name.  Can you help me?  Anyway, Nnamdi Chukwuoka’s only real claim to fame is that he defeated the ethically-challenged Charles Potter.  He then almost immediately settled into his role of Delaware Way drone, and has done so ever since.  Shané came thisclose to defeating Nnamdi in 2022 despite only having had a couple of months to mount a campaign.  As in 90 votes.  Unlike her opponent, she is not prone to ‘simpering timidity’.  She is precisely the kind of legislator that Delaware needs more of.  I’m ready to help, even have my T-shirt from last time, although who knows if I can still fit into it?  She’s starting early this time.  Find out all about her and upcoming events right here!  It’s long past time for the Wilmington delegation to represent, you know, Wilmington.

3.  Finally, Kevin Hensley Has A Strong Opponent.  No, I’m not gonna insert a music video of “Tonight The Bottle Let Me Down”.  That would be crass and gratuitous.  Did somebody say ‘crass and gratuitous’?  All righty, then:

I’d feel guilty were I able to feel guilt.  But I digress.  The name is Gemma Lowery.  She’s already filed her committee  Get to know it/her.  She’s also an At-Large member of the Delaware Democratic State Committee, representing New Castle County.  I’ve heard great things about her, although I don’t know how progressive she is.  But, if elected, she gets the D’s closer to a super-majority in the House.

4.  One Maureen P. Madden Files As D In RD 38.  Her address lists her as a Dagsboro resident. The incumbent is Republican Ronald Gray.  That’s all I could find out.  Can anyone help me fill in the blanks?

4. NCC Democratic Party Convention This Saturday.  I plan to go.  As of now, we have received no word on who is running for election to the committee.  We have received no word on rules changes/proposals.  In fact, nothing but where, when, what, and you’d better be there by 9 or you won’t be allowed to vote.  Here is the NCC site.  Here is the NCC Facebook page.  Doesn’t look like it’s been updated since February.  If anyone has, you know, information you’d like to share, please share it.  We’ll even keep your name anonymous should revealing information violate suggested protocols.

That’s all I’ve got.  What’d I miss, and whaddayathink?

On the Brandywine school board races: I’m with you on Jordan and Wilson, not so sure on Livoy vs. Woodson. Read info on both and there doesn’t seem to be much difference except that Livoy is a retired teacher and Woodson a retired principal. But Woodson seems a little closer to education in 2025 than Livoy. Interested in hearing why you prefer Livoy.
On Darby v. Nnamdi: All I can say is that Nnamdi has been a major disappointment. He’s well intentioned but this son of the legendary Hicks Anderson has less than one-tenth of the fire and enthusiasm of his father. Wilmington deserves better.

The easiest way to add a letter with a diacritical accent mark is to find an example on the Internet and cut-n-paste it. There are harder ways to do it if you really want to.

  3. Chuck Durante says:

Control 130 will get you é.

  4. Joe Connor says:

If you can stand hanging out with me there will be a “donate what you can” event for Shane’ at Gallucio’s on Lovering Ave at 5 PM on Monday May 19th. The District includes Trolley east of DuPont and the Triangle along with a good bit of 19802 west of Market St to and including Brandywine Hills.

  5. The MoMo says:

Anyone have a list of union-supported school board candidates?

    • I know that BEA/DSEA has endorsed Brian Jordan and Frank Livoy.

Lemme check…OK, of the NCC districts, only BEA listed its endorsements on its website:

      https://www.brandywineea.org/

    • Jonathan Tate says:

Higgins is supported by Appoquinimink EA, Cape Henlopen EA is supporting Patty Maull and Christina EA is backing Troncoso. No clue about any of the other races other than the Brandywine ones El Som mentioned below, though there is a 3rd Brandywine race (Najemy vs. Wilson) that the BEA is staying neutral in.

  6. Pole says:

KHN will never go away will she?
