Song of the Day 8/31: Big Star, “Don’t Lie to Me”

Hey, Matt Meyer! This one’s for you!

One of the deep cuts from “#1 Record,” the 1972 debut album by Big Star that’s regarded as one of the founding documents of power pop. Songwriters Alex Chilton and Chris Bell, emulating Lennon/McCartney, are co-credited on all but one of the LP’s tracks because they each tinkered with the other’s songs, but the lead singer – Bell in this case – usually indicates who wrote the tune.

  1. If Matt Meyer can name a scholarship after himself, we can CERTAINLY put together a mix-tape about prevarication and dedicate it to Matt.
