Song of the Day 8/6: Fats Waller, “All That Meat and No Pototoes”

It sounds like the pitch for an SNL skit – RFK Jr. does a cooking show! Except, in the bizarro world we inhabit, it’s real. Or, as some critics have declared, surreal, especially moments like this one:

There is a brief detour about frozen salmon. [Celebrity chef Andrew] Gruel explains that freezing fish kills parasites. Kennedy listens attentively. Given the secretary’s own much-discussed brain-worm story, the moment lands like a joke no one on set appears to notice.

The title of this Fats Waller ditty makes it sound like it should be the show’s theme song, but Fats took a dim view of the keto diet back in 1941. All that meat and no potatoes, he opined, just ain’t right. I take Kennedy as proof that an unbalanced diet leads to an unbalanced mind.

For his 1955 cover, Louis Armstrong, with the help of Velma Middleton, turned the tune into an overtly comic number.
