El Som is under the weather, so fill in for him with your impression of Delaware’s election results. In the rest of the world, change is afoot. For the moment, though, everyone seems stunned by the size of the wave.
Democrats won, but losers abound. The threat of congressional investigations extends beyond politicians – Jamie Raskin already announced he’s preparing subpoenas for law firms that knuckled under to Trump. I don’t care that Hakeem Jeffries and Barack Obama caught flack for the usual “look forward not back” palaver as long as the investigations of corruption proceed.
JD Vance leads the pack of rats swimming away from the sinking SS Trump. He blamed the ass-kicking on the Iran War, which, yeah, duh, Jethro. We should judge your effectiveness by how persuasive you were with boss.
Trump himself retreated to his safe space, convening reporters for an ego-soothing tour of his beloved ballroom. He spent almost 30 minutes extolling its magnificence. The guy doesn’t just want to be Hitler, he wants to be Albert Speer, too.
There’s a three-week lame duck session of Congress, and there will be an uncommonly high number of mobility-challenged waterfowl attending. Some pundits predict Republican resistance to Trump will increase, especially regarding Ukraine and Russia
Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently wrote an op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal warning that “Senate Republicans oppose retreat and appeasement and favor a strong defense. They support Ukraine. They support NATO. They understand Russia, China, North Korea and Iran are enemies. And they want the president to work with Congress to restore American primacy.”
McConnell himself is a lame duck on his last legs, but in this case, he speaks for many other Republicans. He added that passing any part of Trump’s agenda when Congress returns “will require working with Republicans who know the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Ending the obeisance to Mr. Putin may be table stakes for the end-of-year legislation.”
But hey, let Trump show you this ballroom he’s building. It’s gonna have Corinthian columns, which are the best columns. And a 50-foot ceiling, which is aptly the same height as the Big Top for a second-rate circus.
There’s lots to talk about. The floor is yours.
