NJ runs a “Which one of these guys will be governor?” story.
It is a forgone conclusion that Jack Markell or the other Democrat will be Governor. Beth Miller’s story certainly reads that way. She does not even mention Alan Levin so I guess the GOP’s big Joe Biden supporter is going to sit this one out after all.
Big thanks to the News-Journal for that story, exponentially increasing the likelihood of a primary.
Dave,
Where have you been? The primary has been on for a few months.
You are not one of these guys still dreaming about Markell taking out Castle are you?
Just hoping Daddy doesn’t take the T-Bird away…
..must ..need more coffee…
You know, Jason, I wonder why _you_ aren’t “one of these guys still dreaming about Markell taking out Castle..”
You do an awful lot of squawking about Castle on this blog. Why wouldn’t you support the one Democrat most likely of taking him out running against him?
As I beleive I’ve asked you before, if you think someone else (other than Markell) has a better chance against Mike Castle, let’s hear your arguement.
Let me break it down for you like this. We’ll do two questions — one true/false, one multiple choice:
1) A Carney / Markell primary for Governor in 2008 will result in a Democrat being elected Governor, and a Republican being elected to the House of Representatives (to wit, one Mike Castle).
true ___
false ___
2) The Democratic candidate that has the best possible chance to unseat Mike Castle (based on those factors most likely to matter in a race against Castle — money, background, experience, etc.) is:
John Carney ___
Jack Markell ___
Someone else ___
Speaking only for myself — I am a Delaware Democrat that has worked with both Markell and Carney, and have contributed money to both in the past — the answers are as follows; true, Jack Markell.
It’s pretty much as simple as that.
As I think I’ve replied before, that ship has sailed. So I’m supporting the guy who I think will be the best Governor. Jack Markell. We seem to have divergent opinions about that.
Why don’t you come up with an affirmative argument for your guy? That would be interesting. More interesting than pretending you are worried about Castle getting back in.
I’m just trying to reconcile all of the vitriolic comments you make about Mike Castle on this blog with your current position (as stated above), which will practically guarantee Mike Castle gets reelected.
Seems to me that you are the one who is pretending to be worried about Castle getting back in.
Also, you haven’t answered my questions…
guarantee Mike Castle gets reelected.
That’s a bit over the top isn’t it? Castle’s record speaks for itself. Markell would have a cake walk to be sure – but he is beatable.
John Carney, for example, would demolish him.
I hear House Speaker Terry Spence is thinking about it. Auditor Tom Wagner too; although I think he should go for Lt Gov (He gets a free shot like Markell)
I think a Spence/Wagner ticket would be the winning combination.
Despite our mututal distaste for Castle, he does have some distinct advantages over most potential challengers.
Primarily, he’s got deep pockets (a multi millionaire himself) and the ability to raise money from a national network of contacts and support groups.
I don’t like him or his politics, but I respect his political prowess. Markell simply has a better chance because he has the resources to go up against Castle, and can himself draw on a wide network of supports (outside of Delaware) for contributions. Carney’s support is almost exclusively Delaware-based.
Remember, the last time a Democratic victory over an incumbent Republican member of Congress occured in Delaware was when Tom Carper knocked of Bill Roth. Carper was at the heigth of his popularity as Governor (coming off several years of record surpluses, tax cuts and a blistering state economy), and Bill Roth basically passed out from exhaustion on TV.
Castle will be very tough, and Markell is simply better matched with him for the type of race that it will be.
maybe the reason markel won’t run against castle is because he is too busy supporting his campaign. I’ve heard from three sources that jack was at castle’s campaign golf fundraiser a couple weeks ago. Weren’t you going to check that out? Or maybe you did and you didn’t like the answer so you won’t print it.
MD – I heard the same. It was a golf outing a few weeks back. Someone at the event called a friend of mine and basically stated he was watching Jack play golf at the event.
Unbelievably, mind blowingly depressing…
MD
“Markell supports Castle” – turned out be be bullshit. If your three sources who say otherwise are not phantoms but have names and phone numbers send them along.

Joshua,
We disagree that Markell is the only person who can beat Castle. And I think you are more interested in Carney than Castle so there.
either your investigative skills stink or as I said earlier you didn’t like the answer you got so you won’t print it. Jack’s attendance is one of the worst kept secrets in Delaware and I’m not going to do your work for you.
I’ve got a source for you — why not call Jack’s office (state or campaign).
I assume that he has a scheduler and that said individual had an entry for the night in question.
You could certain;y find out if he attended a Mike Castle fundraiser that way.
“Markell supports Castle” – turned out be be bullshit.
Put up or shut up.
Beth Miller contacted me about the article and given that the Dems have a “catfight ” on their hands I could drop a comment but the story would be on Carney and Markell, sounded fair to me.
However, it is not a foregone conclusion that a Democrat will win. In fact if the two Dems venture into a real discussion about the future of Delaware I will come out on top.
Case in point ,we have real plans for Private/Universal Health Care for Delaware’s businesses and individuals plus real education transformation and a way to bring about job creation in Delaware.
Both parties need to move beyond the big egos and small minds which are holding back this state from true greatness.
