Matt Meyer Can Kiss My Ass

Filed in Delaware, Featured by on September 30, 2022

He’s already begging for $$’s for his 2024 run for Governor.  I’ve gotten two pleas in the past 24 hours.

Not only is he not getting my money, he’s lost any chance he had for my support.

I fully expected to back him in 2024.  He at least had some plausible progressive cred, arising mostly from the fact that the cops and the white construction trades didn’t support him.  I had questions about his hoovering up all that Federal relief money, and disbursing it like it was his money to give, with him reaping the political benefits.  But I felt he was at least honest and competent, two traits that neither Tom Gordon nor Paul Clark possessed.  And I saw him as preferable to the Human Photo Op who is Bethany Hall Long.

However, his decision to strap the carcass of Deb Heffernan to his back, and to parade her around her district and around New Castle County as some sort of benevolent deliverer of development dollars was beyond the pale.  It’s one thing to contribute to a campaign, and to provide some symbolic support.  You know, because you ‘have to’.  But his decision to go all-in to help reelect this serial Protector of Polluters stunk as bad as the effluent emitting from the Delaware City Refinery.

His ‘Realpolitik’ decision made clear that he would continue the Delaware Way tradition of marginalizing progressives and progressive initiatives.  Whether his choice was based on (a) sending a message to the usual campaign financiers that he could be trusted to protect their malevolent interests and/or (b) a blatant appeal to what he thinks, but isn’t, a unilateral Jewish vote,  it proved that progressives can’t trust him.

Meaning, if you find neither BHL or Meyer acceptable, it’s time to find a progressive alternative.  I can immediately think of two names that not only could win, but could well be the favorites to win.  One is probably easy to figure out, the other might be a little more off the radar screen, which could redound to their advantage.

Regardless, to me anyway, Meyer is no longer the default choice for Governor.  He demonstrated that through his actions.  Time to recruit and elect a progressive Governor.

Who’s with me?  Gotta go. Time to ‘unsubscribe’ from what is already a relentless series of e-mails.  Should have done it months ago.

    Three quick things.
    1) Best DL headline ever.
    2) I asked a politically active friend “Who do you like for Gov?” and they said “Anybody but Meyer.” When I asked why such a strong reaction, they said “I just don’t like him.” which is hard to overcome.
    3) I’m calling it. It is going to be Hall-Long. So another 2 terms of Carney.

    • Not if one of my two progressive dream candidates runs…

      • Jason330 says:

Aside from Meyer & BHL, I don’t really see the campaign machinery being tuned up for this race.

        I hope I’m wrong.

    • Ben says:

Another 2 terms of Carney just means Carper’s 9th and 10th terms

    • TheSmyrnaMustache says:

I’d dispute that BHL would be another two terms of Carney. Need to see what her campaign proposals/pledges are, of course, but she has already said she would sign marijuana legalization legislation. As Matt Denn will probably tell you, it is not easy to be your own person and be more progressive than the Governor when you’re the LG. Meyer isn’t likeable and gets a lot of credit for being a progressive just because he isn’t Tom Gordon. I don’t know Ms. Willing, but I do think I know the person to whom she’s referring who totally soured on Meyer. it’s for good reason.Maybe Brian Selander will move back across the border and run.

  2. Jason330 says:

    New poll questions going up.

  3. Jordyn says:

I’m still supporting him. Matt was a donor for Madinah, canvassed for her, and endorsed her.

I’m not sure why you feel the need to bring up the Jewish aspect. You’re starting to sound like the antisemites in my RD that believe a *jewish connection* exists and runs our state.

But as I recall- I was referred to as “Anthony Delcollo’s biggest supporter” for simply questioning Spiros so I digress.

    • FWIW says:

Matt also supported and fundraised for Eric Morrison. Here’s the deal with Meyer. He kinda marches to the beat of his own drum. He does what he feels is right and doesn’t walk lockstep with any political camp, whether it’s Delaware Way Dems or progressives. So he ends up ruffling feathers on all sides. He tends to support progressive candidates, but he won’t always do it. Not sure why he decided to take Deb’s side on this one, but I’m guessing he just doesn’t hate her as much as some of you do. I don’t like what he did- I was rooting for Becca- but that’s what you get with him. He aligns on a lot of progressive issues and with a lot of progressive candidates, but he’s not ideological and he’ll take the other side sometimes if that’s what he believes. Taken all together, his record is good enough for me to support him versus BHL, but I suppose others may disagree.

      • I take your point.

It wasn’t so much his taking her side. It was the degree to which he dragged her across the finish line.

Besides, there ARE at least two progressives who would beat both in the primary. Whether either of them runs…

      • Nancy Willing says:

hmmmmm….Meyer “doesn’t walk lockstep with any political camp, whether it’s Delaware Way Dems or progressives” ….or the GOP, the chambers of commerce, or the development industry types? Take a look at this man’s campaign finance reports.

One person you all know who worked very hard to get Matt elected in 2016 has found it is completely impossible to work with him on county matters and whose opinion of the man has rtaken a nose dive to the bottom.

No one that I know and respect likes him and it isn’t because he’s “not ideological”. It is because he is an insufferable egomaniac with no respect for anyone else. I have some choice audio recordings of my interactions with him on behalf of the civic community. This guy is an intractable Coonsie and is mostly beholden to special interests.

A friend who likes Heffernan recently tried to explain to me that Meyer really, actually favored Cotto and he had worked hard to help Becca behind the scenes but just had to put on appearances for support for Deb due to the Jewish factor. I hadn’t known Heffernan is Jewish until that conversation. My Jewish family members were at a loss on that too.

It is certain that Matt is beholden to GOPer Alan Levin who spent 2017 linked at the hip with Meyer training him on how to run an executive office
(while also holding down his new job at Drinker Biddle AKA Shaun Tucker’s former place of business SEE https://web.dscc.com/events/Chamber-Leadership-Breakfast-with-the-Honorable-Alan-Levin-1929/details).

When I wrote about the two of them and their plotting ways around the Wilm-NCC Airport I was accused of antisemitism on Jordan Pusey’s facebook. How dare I discuss two Jewish men in the context of questionable ethics? HELL with this shit about putting faith ahead of public policy. It doesn’t wash and Matt and supporters shouldn’t hide behind it.

        • OK, let’s get this out of the way ASAP. Your enmity for anybody who isn’t Tom Gordon is well-documented here. By you.

Trust me, he didn’t work hard for Cotto behind the scenes. I know some folks who did. Matt wasn’t one of them.

As I pointed out, putting in appearances for someone is totally different from what Matt did: Parading her around as if she was the Messiah (religious connotation unintentional). Perhaps he should stop worshiping that Golden Calf (religious connotation intentional), this time, in the guise of Bond Bill funding.

My point on the Jewish vote, which (a) has either been distorted, and/or (b) was poorly articulated by me, was that there are reasons why one makes the Realpolitik decision Meyer made. I speculated that he concluded incorrectly, as Jewish voters are not monolithic in their political views, that backing Heffernan to the hilt would score him some brownie points with Jewish voters because Heffernan targeted much of her campaign to her Jewish supporters in the district. A cynical choice made on behalf of political gain. That’s all.

          • Nancy Willing says:

yeah, I was friends with Gordon and listened to what he had to say. It is take it or leave it but I do tend to believe him.

          • Jonathan Tate says:

Not sure why you think Deb’s strongest support came from her synagogue—aside from her rabbi giving her a non-maxed donation. The most Jewish areas of RD-6 were not her strongest precincts of support, where she lives was in Gordon Heights and Bellefonte. The Jewish community there exists, but it’s not large.

        • Nancy Willing says:

          Shawn Tucker, rather.

It is suspected by me that Alan Levin gave Meyer the $100K he had loaned to his campaign. My joke is that Levin got the no show, year-long job at the developer attorney’s firm as a way to compensate him for the loan. Allegedly.

Pat Jones — who famously lent Karen Hartley-Nagle $60K in increments which she apparently then paid into her campaign as personal loans — told me he was taken to lunch with a DEM operative –Ed Freel?– who said The Party Does Not Want DOE To Investigate Candidate Loans. Jones has now dropped the issue because his brother Larry Jones paid him the money KHN owed him. It is exhausting following the KHN show.

Manlove certainly protected KHN and Meyer when these self loan charges were levied. It was Gordon’s assertion that Meyer got that money from someone else and in a meeting with the Dept. of Elections, it was Coons’ attorneys who came to defend Meyer.

Anyhoo….likely we will never see justice in these matters. I pursued Manlove for a written statement affirming her contention that the Dept has a rule that they don’t investigate candidate loans. She finally did admit to me in an email that there is no such rule in writing but it is their practice.

One thing to revisit next year when we have more progressives in office is Eric Morrison’s bill to reform campaign finance law that never made it past Pete ‘n Val last year because HIGH DEMs. Markell had Manlove and Earl Jaques lead his sham campaign finance reform effort where they cherry-picked the Veasey report – aftermath of the Tigani reveal. Eric means to rectify that and good on him.

    • Because her strongest support in the district came from those who she goes to synagogue with. Something of which Matt was not unaware.

As to the anti-semite connection, I’m Jewish, although admittedly not a particularly observant one.

      • Alby says:

One of the historians on the Ken Burns Holocaust documentary pointed out the ridiculous contradictions anti-Semites spout without ever noticing that both can’t be true at once.

For example, Jews supposedly control the capitalist banking system — but they’re intent on taking over the world and imposing communism. Anti-Semites never explain how that works, for the simple reason that it doesn’t work.

Similarly, Jews supposedly all stick together on things. Yet it’s also a cliché that if you have two Jews in town you’ll have two synagogues. WHICH IS IT?

      • Jordyn says:

El- I know that. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that it was poorly articulated.

Unlike the Gordon fanclub on here, you’re not spinning insane conspiracy theories of Levin and Meyer getting rich off of County Government- things Gordon actually did.

Antisemitism is on the rise, and trash like this is being distributed our state:
        https://www.wboc.com/news/anti-semitic-flyers-found-outside-homes-on-rehoboth-beach/article_a3ea3974-386a-11ed-bac0-af226876bac9.html

I think we all need to be careful about how we speak.

        • Jonathan Tate says:

Hey Jordyn-just wanted to thank you for consistently being one of the strongest allies to the Jewish community on the Delaware left. I agree that I don’t think El is a self-hating Jew or anything, but we all including myself should be more careful with how we speak.

It can often be tough for people on the left (though people who claim antisemitism isn’t 100X worse/more violent/etc. on the right are kidding themselves or are cynical liars), because white Jews (85% of us) aren’t necessarily systematically oppressed the way that other minorities are and we’re mostly middle-class or upper-middle-class, but history has shown that no amount of status, wealth, or assimilation, even being totally secular like myself and El, can keep any of us safe from hatred.

  5. NascarDad says:

I’m neutral on Matt Meyer; HOWEVER I do believe a 2024 win would go further to support progressive causes than any of the alternatives. I think true progressives can be more effective in the house and senate; he may not do anything to independently advance progressive causes but he wont be a brick wall like Carney or his protoge. As I see it, there is an opportunity cost to floating a progressive in a BHL/MM primary where other districts could be up for grabs.

The Deb thing escapes me but he is also not the kind of entrenched politico that Gordon was. He may be trying his hand at realpolitik, but perhaps he needs someone to explain to him why its a dead end. Maybe he could have a sit-down with Rob in the bunker?

    • He has someone on his own team who likely explained it to him.

      • NascarDad says:

The downside of not being an entrenched politico, is not knowing who to trust in that world.

        • RE Vanella says:

Meyer’s been in the studio and would almost certainly accept another invite.

Here’s my view. I know you all want to argue like it’s 15 years ago. That’s history.

The Hope Center and release of the Lymond Moses video is good. But is Meyer going to challenge capital? No. He’ll still give away millions to Amazon and Ally Bank

Agree with Nascar Pop. Best worst option right now.

  6. Ben says:

The guy reeks of political ambition. If he lived in a different place, he might be a maga.

I expect him to go with the winds though. So if we elect a progressive congress, he’ll sign what he’s given and bask in the credit.

  7. ClayBizOwn says:

Not a fan. He had a big press conference in Claymont a year ago about assisting the Philly Pike revitalization, got the small business owners all encouraged then decided not to do it without explaining why. I guess the voting numbers aren’t high enough for him. Right now he would be a no vote in the primary.

  8. Jonathan Tate says:

I’m pretty much with Rob on this one, just as I was when I went on his show. Meyer isn’t going to challenge capital, but he’s competent and supports a lot of good things. He’s not exactly the only Delaware progressive to have supported Rep. Heffernan (hell, Bellefonte’s openly socialist town council president and de facto mayor under its system did) and as a 6th RD resident I can attest that he wasn’t exactly barnstorming for her all around here. I don’t know of any progressive that could outright beat him in a two-way race or a 3 way with BHL. Maybe if the field becomes a 4+ person logjam the WFP/DSA/PDD could try to run someone and win with a low plurality like how PDD/DSA did with Kyra Hoffner but other than in that situation I personally wouldn’t recommend it, though of course if I’m still DSA co-chair in ’24 I will work my ass off for any candidate my steering committee votes to endorse in any race.

Update on the scum bags involved with the smear campaign on Eric and Madinah and how it relates to Matt Meyer for Governor campaign. I was reading David French on being smeared this morning and was inspired to take another look at the attacks on Eric and Madinah. https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/lifting-up-the-rock-on-the-gutter – Lifting Up the Rock on the Gutter Right Lie after lie after lie.

Citizen for Thoughtful Government (CFTD) filed under an LLC and current law evidently does not require any report of receipts, only expenditures. I looked at A Better DE to compare and it similarly did not declare receipts, only expenditures.

But I was able to identify where Heisler is directly linked to CFTD.

Meyer for Delaware [Governor] collecting between November and December 2021 not only accepted funds from the Heislers but expended funds to the Heislers.

And as such, will Jordan Pusey finally call on Matt Meyer to turn back all of the monies received from the Heislers?

    • Jason330 says:

This looks terrible for Matt M. What is he thinking?

    • Paul says:

Can we make reporting of receipts a requirement in the next session?

    • FWIW says:

Er. Not sure I see the connection there, Nancy. You’re alleging that the Heislers are behind Citizens for Thoughtful Government based on the fact that the LLC’s address is at Reybold? Um, well Reybold offers mail box rentals at that address. So, my guess is that Citizens for Thoughtful Government is renting one of those boxes and using it as their mailing address. So, they’re just a Reybold customer. Is that the only connection? If so, then they’re not associated with the Heislers any more than someone who rents an apartment in a BPG building is associated with Chris Buccini.

      • Nancy Willing says:

Maybe so. But this bottom line is that the materials involved are directly supportive of Heisler’s very personal and public fight against MAW and I would take a bet that it’s Heisler’s duckets that are behind the effort. Who paid the 33K and where are the receipts? Don’t you want to know?

  10. Nancy Willing says:

I don’t think any entity should be able to get away with failure to disclose where/who their funds were derived from.

I called Patrick Jackson and he will be researching whether it is legal to conceal receipts and whether DE law approves of this or not. He’s busy with the 30 day report calls to the Dept. of Elections but has this on his plate and I am to call him back in a week.

30 Day reports are due on October 9th.

    • SussexWatcher says:

Shouldn’t the Department of Elections staff know whether it’s legal just off the top of their heads? That doesn’t seem like it should take any research at all.
