Song of the Day 11/7: Wilson Phillips, “Hold On”
Don’t make yourself miserable.
Try to remember that these midterms are going to be a shitshow by Republican design, and that making liberals suffer is part of the point. They are miserable people and they don’t actually love company, they just want everyone else to be as miserable as they are because they’re, y’know, assholes. I know that’s not as succinct as the cliché, but it’s more accurate.
Pop songwriter/producer Glen Ballard had many hits, including several No. 1s, with a broad array of artists in the ’90s, but this was probably the biggest. The lead single from the trio’s debut album was Billboard’s top single of 1990, an award determined not by a vote of industry insiders but by sales and airplay.
Lead singer Chynna Phillips, daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, said she wrote the lyrics based on her drug and alcohol rehab experience. (For those who’ve forgotten, Carnie and Wendy Wilson are Brian’s daughters.) Their eponymous album included two more No. 1 hits, but the band broke up after a second album. They have periodically reunited for special events and holiday albums.

Nah — Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, because the scene embodies the idea of the guilty pIeasure. I do the same thing when I hear it.

@Alby: Thank you sincerely for the three hopeful song posts. I am definitely in a state right now. There is insanity in the air. Not to mention a Blood Moon eclipse, an unimaginably big Powerball jackpot, and the end of democracy. Those of us who have listened to you hosting the children’s hospital fundraiser know that beneath that caustic and crusty exterior, there is a huge and soft heart. <3
Keep it down, somebody might hear you.
You are too kind, but you’re welcome.
