DL Delaware Election Results Thread: Tuesday, November 5, 2024

OK, guys, this thread is for the Delaware results only.

I can certainly understand that, as the national results come in and some of you perhaps indulge a bit too much (whether out of sheer joy or abject depression), you might mistakenly post national stuff here.

I’ll give you a pass because I’m a generous guy–and because I might be right there with you when it comes to over-indulging.

  1. PS says:

Where’s the best place to watch Delaware results?

  2. Alby says:

With 30% of the vote in, Meyer is running about 1,000 votes behind Rochester and McBride, which comes out to about 1%.

  3. JUST got an e-mail from the Delaware Democratic Party. 9:32 pm, to be precise.

    It read:

    It’s Election Day. Go vote!

    Unbelievable.

  4. Factz says:

Doesn’t look good for Nic beard. And so much for the Monique Johns October suprise

    • Alby says:

Yeah, I though Smith was more vulnerable than that. Might be a Frank Burns situation where the low-name-recognition Democrat does better the second time around.

Monique Johns should provide high entertainment value for your political dollar.

  5. Factz says:

I wrote myself in for a council seat in a half hearted attempt to get a front row seat

  6. Wayne S Whirld says:

I will be amused how the council and Marcus will deal with Monique. It will be entertaining, and Rick Jenkins will have fun

  7. MC says:

So the democrats didn’t gain any seats? In a place allegedly so deep blue? I’m glad the state party spent all of their money and time in primaries. Thanks Betsy. Great job.

    • We gained the Ramone seat.

      • liberalgeek says:

And retained every other seat, including the seats held previously by the two most recent Speakers, a Newark retirement and every statewide elected office.

The Senate will likely be similar in profile to last session and the House will be at least 2 steps closer to the left.

        • Joe Connor says:

And the “powers that be” actively obstructed the ultimately successful campaign of Frank Burns with their support of the wanna be. Not to mention the party’s ridiculous and manipulated endorsement of BHL. Betsy needs to go crawl in a hole.

        • At least THREE steps closer to the left:

Claire Snyder-Hall for Pete Schwartzkopf ( that’s actually about 5 steps right there)

          Kamela Smith for Val Longhurst

and Frank Burns for Mike Ramone.

Plus, Mara Gorman is a GREAT replacement for Paul Baumbach.

I also think that Melanie Ross Levin will be an upgrade over the Sean Matthews who voted too much with the NRA.

I am anxiously awaiting the leadership elections. There absolutely must be a strong progressive presence in leadership and in the key committee assignments.

  8. Al Catraz says:

I have enjoyed the “I Wanna Be Defeated” farewell tour by the lesser known Ramone brother, Mike… and for not the least of reasons that it was a farewell tour.

    • Alby says:

He did the party a favor by sparing it the next Lauren Witzke, and they paid for his farewell tour.

Most remarkable to me is the enormous number of seats the GOP didn’t contest at all. Don’t know whether the shortage is loons, the money for their filing fees, or both.

  9. SussexWatcher says:

    Looks like everyone underestimated Shupe.

  10. Alby says:

    Claire Snyder-Hall wins 55-45.
    Stell Parker Selby wins 50.7-49.3.
    Monica Beard loses 45-55.

  11. Pleased and relieved that Russ Huxtable won against the wife of that Caesar Rodney Institute guy.

He will be even more effective on the issue of affordable housing with what promises to be a far more enlightened House Democratic Caucus.

    • mediawatch says:

Small consolation. The best we can look forward to after Tuesday’s shitstorm is Russ Huxtable and a more enlightened House Deemocratic Caucus.
Feel like channeling my inner Rip Van Winkle and wondering whether I’ll still be above ground in 20 years.

      • Looking at quite a bit of binge-watching to fill the MSNBC void, which, come to think of it, I spent WAY to much time watching MSNBC.

More reading too, but I just don’t want to read anything about fascism. Living it will prove bad enough…gonna catch up on my Walter Mosley and Easy Rawlins.

        • mediawatch says:

Your reference to MSNBC rings true … and stings as well.
We progressives have spent years criticizing those who reside in the Fox News bubble while we’ve done the same with MSNBC. We deluded ourselves into thinking that we were the majority, that we represented the real America. We believed that policy ideas, ethics and morality were what really mattered, but it turns out that voters wanted to be entertained, though not by the galaxy of stars that Kamala assembled.
We thought we were right about so many things, until we woke up this morning and found out that we were wrong.
Yet I remain at least a little optimistic. After all, four years from now chances are that most Americans will believe that they were better off under Biden than they were under Trump, who has made far too many promises that he can never deliver.

  12. Lope says:

    Immediate thoughts…

Monica Beard was nice, but not a natural campaigner. Sorry that matters.

Terrell is another nice guy, but didn’t seem to take his own campaign serious. Liked the attention but didn’t do the work.

Frank Burns seat was ripe for the taking and Frank completed that assignment. Not surprised by that one.

No surprises in statewides. Seems like 55-45 is the natural break in these state races.

Monique Johns will be pure political entertainment. Most likely gone in 2028, and thank god.

Thought Russ was a goner but he showed some guts in that win.

    That’s all for now

    • participle says:

Frank Burns’ win was not a given. Those guys worked their asses off, first against that deep-pocketed douche, Democrat Mike Smith, and then against the woman endorsed by their beloved Michael Ramone.

It took someone like Burns and his crack team to flip that district. I live in Meadowood and they sent me at least six mailers and came to my door around ten times.

      • Frank Burns is such a fantastic addition to that Caucus.

Frank also has ‘paid it forward’ by helping other new candidates build their campaigns. I saw it first-hand. Hope that fucking guy is headed back to Illinois or wherever he can build up a resume based on a phony ‘not-for-profit’.

He DID have a tough row to hoe, thanks to the Other Mike Smith’s trust fund from mumsy and daddy.

The fact that he’s replacing Mike Ramone makes it doubly-sweet. I look for him to make a real difference in Dover. Hopefully starting with the leadership election…

    • Nick says:

That is completely true that I am not a natural campaigner. 😉

I think it’s something people running for office in future should know. It’s a hard adjustment as a policy nerd to knocking doors and summarizing things in 30 seconds instead of a policy paper with footnotes, and working at it hard isn’t always enough if you struggle to be comfortable with it.

      • I have so much respect for you, and especially for candidates who are not ‘naturals’ at campaigning.

You ran a great campaign, it just turns out that the timing wasn’t right.

I know that, whether as a future candidate, or in your role as an essential voice in crafting policy that helps people who need help, we will all benefit from what you have to offer. We already have.

    • Joe Connor says:

I agree that Russ had a hill to climb and I admire that he did it successfully!
