How Cops Routinely Mistreat Our Most Vulnerable:
The Biden administration launched the probes in the wake of the national outcry over the police killings in 2020 of George Floyd in Minneapolis and Breonna Taylor in Louisville. Reports issued over the last two years have focused largely on excessive use force and the kind of racial profiling associated with those high-profile cases.
But beyond the most shocking examples of police violence, the reports have highlighted something else: the pernicious ways that other patterns of unlawful policing can disrupt and cause deep harm to local communities.
Investigators detailed how officers sexually assaulted women, mistreated the homeless, exploited poor people, threatened and abused minors, taunted and arrested people suffering from mental and behavioral health episodes and punished protesters exercising their constitutional rights to free speech — especially those who denounced police violence.
Federal authorities said the findings reports provide a road map for police accountability plans that could help reduce abuses and improve community trust. But the Justice Department has nearly run out of time to enter legally binding consent decrees that would require jurisdictions to change use-of-force policies, officer training, disciplinary procedures, data collection and public disclosure.
We in Delaware haven’t nearly run out of time, though.
Homeless Sweeps Designed To Destroy Lives. Lives that are already on the brink:
A record number of Americans are living outside. Cities have responded by removing encampments from public spaces, a practice commonly referred to as “sweeps.” In the process, workers often take people’s belongings — including important documents, survival gear and irreplaceable mementos.Over and over, people across the country told ProPublica they were devastated by such losses. We gave them notecards so they could explain in their own words how the sweeps have affected them.
If a scintilla of humanity remains in the (pardon the expression) ‘soul’ of Mayor Mike, perhaps he will read this and be moved to change his anti-human tactics. Must-reading for Carney who, of course, won’t read it. And/or won’t care if he does.
Nativists Vs. Tech Bros: Who will Trump side with? Silly question–he’ll side with those who give him the most money. In other words, the Tech Bros:
Over the past few days, a fight has erupted within the MAGA right over legal immigration, specifically about whether the country should admit more high-skilled immigrants.
On the one side, you have opportunistic tech oligarchs like Elon Musk and David Sacks. These are incredibly wealthy figures who are open about using their newfound influence in government to serve both their ideological and their private business interests. On the other are figures like Laura Loomer, Nick Fuentes, and other nativist (and often openly racist) online personalities who had been vocal Trump supporters long before the Silicon Valley right joined the coalition.
Raise Your Hand If The South Korean National Assembly Hasn’t Impeached You. Two for two:
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s opposition-controlled National Assembly voted Friday to impeach acting President Han Duck-soo despite vehement protests by governing party lawmakers, further deepening the country’s political crisis set off by President Yoon Suk Yeol’s stunning imposition of martial law and ensuing impeachment.
The single-chamber National Assembly passed Han’s impeachment motion with a 192-0 vote. Lawmakers with the governing People Power Party boycotted the vote and gathered around the podium where assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik was seated and shouted that the vote was “invalid” and demanded Woo’s resignation. No violence or injuries were reported.
The PPP lawmakers protested after Woo called for a vote on Han’s impeachment motion after announcing its passage required a simple majority in the 300-memer assembly, not a two-thirds majority as claimed by the PPP. Most South Korean officials can be impeached by the National Assembly with a simple majority vote, but a president’s impeachment needs the support of two-thirds. There are no specific laws on the impeachment of an acting president.
The Bunker Gets It Half-Right. Great analysis of the SD 1 Special Election, but the analysis of the SD 5 process wasn’t on point. Worth a listen. Especially since “The Irish Lurch” is the perfect description of Bud Freel.
What do you want to talk about?
Carney has an opportunity to show some of those Catholic values he learned at St Mark’s and during his early career at the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington.
Hope springs eternal!

Continuing problems with state audit due to Unemployment Fund, millions spent trying to get it fixed, apparently a $59Million write-off, then a $19million write up?
Good luck Gov-elect Meyer, I’ve got a feeling you’re going to need it.
Luckily, I think the Opponents Of Positive Solutions (OOPS) are all heading out of state government (but watch out Wilmington!).
The one (perhaps ONLY) area where you figured the Carney Administration would function properly was in the area of fiscal management.
You (meaning I) would have been so wrong.
