Gov.Markell Reality Check Town Hall in Wilmington Tonight

Filed in Delaware by on March 9, 2009

For those of you in Wilmington, Gov. Markell will be making a stop on his Reality Check tour this evening to discuss in detail the financial predicament of the State and thoughts on bridging the gap. State Senator Bobby Marshal, State Rep Helene Keeley, State Rep Hazel Plant and perhaps some City Councilpeople will also be in attendance.

The meeting is from 6 to 8PM at the Sara Pyle Academy located at 501 Lombard St in the City.

I plan on getting out of work early enough today to attend this.  Anyone else?

I keep meaning to go to one of these.

Well, Jason, you’re in luck because there’s another one. From the Community News:

Brandywine Hundred, Del. — State Rep. Thomas H. Kovach (R-Fox Point) is hosting a community meeting to discuss economic development and state parkland in his district. Gov. Jack Markell will also discuss the state’s financial situation.

“I look forward to holding my first Community Meeting in the district, which I expect to be very informative for local residents concerning issues of both local and statewide concern,” Kovach said. “We’ll be discussing business development along our ‘Philly Pike corridor’ and access to and preservation of our state parkland, as well as what’s happening in state government.”

    Other panelists include:

    * Delaware Economic Development Director Alan Levin
    * Division of Parks & Recreation Director Charles Salkin
    * Delaware Greenways Executive Director Mark Chura

    Other guests include:
    * Sen. Harris McDowell (D-Wilmington North)
    * Sen. Margaret Rose Henry (D-Wilmington East)
    * Sen. Catherine Cloutier (R-Heatherbrooke)

The Town Hall-style meeting will be held March 10, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Elementary School.

Your chance to ask McDowell and Henry why they were the only 2 not to vote in favor of the eminent domain bill. McDowell, one of the sponsors, was a “not voting,” while Henry was conveniently absent for that vote.

If I can attend, I also may ask Sen. McDowell about his views on FOIA. He has never spoken in favor of open government.

I actually attended this meeting. Jacks power point presentation will scare the bejesus out of you. If you dont believe the economy in Delaware is in the tank…check out the presentation. I have a copy of it which Ive been passing around to the parents of the disabled….its really scary for that population.

I did corner Harris and asked him to “get the single payer bill out the drawer”, and he actually said he plans too….when you see the State of the economy we know “now is the time”. He says he will get another number on the bill and get it out very soon. We can only hope all those who signed on before will again, along with others as they have to make those choice “CUTS”!

The parents of the kids graduating special education have no where to go….but home. Its a crime. All those years and all that progression will go down the tubes. The parents both working, one has to quit. They have no idea how they will be able to deal with this “adult” child with no support system. Parents whose kids are the most vulnerable, severally disables are out of the minds with fear! They know if staff is cut, its a death sentence to their adult children.

It pisses me off royally that State Workers think none of them should be furloughed or laid off. They had a raise two years ago, they and their families have 100% paid health care, they can get other jobs….our kids can’t…

I am a union supporter have been my whole life, since my father was a union organizer…but this is too too much. They need to get off their NO, NO exempt us bullshit and take their licks like everyone else.

EXACTLY Liz, but everyone thinks their “issue” is priority over the next. That’s the point that Americans and Delawareans more importantly now have to face. Even those “issues”, that were never adequately funded as you have described countless times, will be asked again to forego or cut back. This, in my opinion is the real reason for these town meetings–especially in light of the clear example lists made of TOTAL annilation of programs and departments to equate 660 million. I know what I can unload, that won’t be pretty or popular–but has a significant pricetag–and will cling to Grandma’s advice that “half a loaf is better than none”. I think for most though…they really think their “loaf” is the most important. Some blame Clinton, some blame Bush, I blame the darn 80’s and all that extravagant living! So what major organ are you giving?

As an officer of a small business in Delaware I am concerned that the monies that Delaware recevies from this stimulis will not stay in this state. My concern is that construction companies outside of delaware will be awarded the jobs. Over the past 6 years we have seen out business decline because the jobs have been awarded to larger construction companies out of New Jersey. It is my concern that those of us in the state who are struggling to keep our heads above water will not benifit from this money. I hope that the Gov. and Del Dot will be taking this into consideration when they plan these projects. If the work can be done by contractors with in this state at a price that is competitive – it should be done by them.
