Delaware was the first state to adopt the Constitution, but it’s the last to hold primary elections. In much of the state, the primaries are the only elections that matter. In statewide races and much of New Castle County, whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the overwhelming favorite in the general election. In most of Sussex, the opposite holds true. We should have most of the results shortly after polls close at 8 p.m.
A big photo op took place at Edgemoor yesterday a new container port expected to cost $669 million. The state has committed $325 million to the project, which aims to compete with the ports upriver in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Write down the number so you can track the cost overruns yourself.
In the latest chapter of the back-and-forth game of letting the courts decide election rules, the Supremes voted 7-2, Thomas and Alito dissenting, to leave in place an injunction blocking Trump’s goal of undermining voting by mail. Alito, BTW, finally released his financial disclosure forms for 2025, and guess what? He owns a clutch of oil and energy stocks. He has neither sold them nor recused himself ahead of next month’s oral arguments in the City of Boulder’s lawsuit against oil companies for damages related to global warming.
They wheeled out what remains of Mitch McConnell – note I did NOT say Mitch McConnell’s remains – in the Capitol yesterday, but under strange conditions that didn’t dispel concerns about his competency: No video allowed. So if we’re playing 20 questions, we still can’t definitively answer “animal” or “vegetable.”
On the international front, NATO jets shot down a Russian drone in Lithuanian airspace. Not just a little, either – it was about 50 miles from the border with Belarus. Putin has been pulling a lot of this crap lately.
Officials in NATO countries including Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Poland have in recent weeks accused Russia of involvement in acts such as drone incursions, sabotage, arson, surveillance of defense facilities and planning to use a drone carrying explosives to attack an airport.
The floor’s yours, and don’t forget to vote if you haven’t already. Your representation could depend on it.
Also, Delaware didn’t ratify the Reconstruction amendments until 1901.
