DE Senate Rumor Watch
From the tipline we learn that there is talk that one of Thurman Adams’ daughters may run for his seat.
The tipster notes:
How’s that for progress?
I guess it depends on how reactionary the daughter is. Anyway, when politics becomes the family business it is easy to set up these arbitrage situations.
The first instinct of political parties in situations like this is to first go to the spouse of the deceased. It’s how Nancy Cook, Dori Connor and Cathy Cloutier got their initial elected positions. And it’s always, “It’s what (fill in the blank) would have wanted”.
When Speaker of the House Brad Barnes died, they put the full-court press on his widow to run. When she declined, they chose Ben Ewing b/c “it’s what Brad would have wanted”.
No matter who they choose, it’ll be b/c “It’s what Thurman would have wanted”. Which is all the more reason to support someone else.
BTW, it doesn’t always work. When the beloved Herman Holloway, Sr. died, ne’er-do-well son/hustler Herman ‘the Lesser’ lost to Margaret Rose Henry, who ran as a Republican in probably the most Democratic district in the state.
The scenario is certainly plausible, although ‘bulo thinks that the grandson is the more likely alternative. He’s in his 30’s, and already works for the Senate. Just think of it. 40 more years of a family dynasty? Eeeew!
One reason the daughter might run is to keep the seat in the D column. She may be a DINO on progressive issues (I can’t postulate as I don’t know her or have heard her speak), but a true progressive won’t win that seat anyway.
….but a true progressive won’t win that seat anyway.
Why not try? No guts,no glory.
Art, one reason why is that there is no primary for a Special Election. The parties select the nominees and, as has been pointed out, in the Bridgeville/Georgetown area, that’s a pretty closed circle of inbred political hangers-on making that decision.
It’s true that things could change in 2010 when the seat is up again.
FWIW, if daughter Polly lives in Rehoboth, as was reported in the News-Journal, then she doesn’t reside in her father’s district. ‘Bulo’s dinero is still on the grandson.
If a Joe Booth runs, he’d have a real shot at winning. Moreso against a Kenny McDowell than against a sympathetic family figure mourning a death, but still a real chance.
And, although the Beast Who Slumbers hates family dynasties, look at it this way from the progressive perspective: even an Adams progeny couldn’t possibly be any LESS receptive to governmental reform and progressive principles.
Could they?
Kenny would be good, so would Mike Wyatt and even Pat Ewing.
“They’re creepy and they’re kooky,
Mysterious and spooky,
They’re all together ooky,
The Addams Family.
Their house is a museum
Where people come to see ’em
They really are a scream
The Addams Family.
(Neat)
(Sweet)
(Petite)
So get a witches shawl on
A broomstick you can crawl on
We’re gonna pay a call on
The Addams Family.”
‘bolu’s right, Polly lives in Rehoboth but the other daughter does live in the district. Not sure where the son lives.
Either way, Joe Booth has the name recognition and I’d almost rather see an R get the seat than another Dixiecrat. That would leave a House seat open and a much smaller district to have to find a good D for. The Senate has a much better majority than the House and a D seat in the House would do more to strenthen the Democratic Party than ‘just any old’ D victory in the Senate.
PI, Bulo is wrong (again). Polly DOES NOT live in Rehoboth.
Her sister Lynn does.
Polly lives in Bridgeville, two houses down from Sen. Adams house.
Credit where credit’s due to anon with a period. Lynn (Adams) Kokjohn lives in Rehoboth. Polly (Adams) Mervine does live in Bridgeville.
Thanks Bulo, just keepin it real…
On a serious note, I think it will be Chris “Big Daddy” Adams. Son of the late Brent Adams.
Who do you think it will be? It will be awful tough for Booth to beat a Adams from Bridgeville in a 30 day special election.
As long as El Somnambulo’s been around, he’s never ever figured out Sussex County. People like you and MJ have a much better take on what might happen.
Great Slumbering One – some of us are STILL trying to figure out Sussex County. 🙂
Thanks Bulo.
Sen. Adams father was Thurmond Garrison Adams. Born Nov. 21 1894 and died on Feb. 5 1989. Sen. Adams is actually Thurmond Roger Adams. Did you know that? Alot of people assume he was a Jr. because he signed his name with Jr. But his correct middle name was Roger.
It’s Thurman, not Thurmond.
Dueling anons!
My fault. I have a neighbor that spells it Thurmond.
