Vote Today!

Filed in National by on November 2, 2010

The polls have just opened! I was up early this morning putting up signs at polling locations. I’d like to congratulate Richard Korn for having the signs mostly easily placed in the ground. I’d also like to congratulate Tom Wagner for having the ugliest signs of any candidate.

I’d like to thank Christine O’Donnell for giving everyone a final reminder of why she’d be a terrible Senator. Her commercial is airing –> maybe not –> WTF! –> it’s everyone’s fault but hers –> oh, her bad. That’s pretty much the story of her campaign. Urquhart stayed out of the limelight for the past few days and hasn’t called a Delaware voter an extremist for days!

I’d like to remind you that Delaware Liberal endorses the following people:
Chris Coons – U.S. Senate
John Carney – U.S. House of Representatives
Chip Flowers – Treasurer
Richard Korn – Auditor

I’d like to throw in my personal endorsements for Trinidad Navarro – New Castle County Sheriff, Ciro Poppitti for Register of Wills and Ed Osienski for 24th District Representative.

So what are you seeing at your polling place? Is there a high turnout? Are there any candidates there to greet you?

If you need a reminder on why to vote this year, listen to Joe Biden:

  1. Delaware Dem says:

Was third in line this morning before 7 at the East Side Charter School in Wilmington, DE. About 10 other voters in line after me, with more walking up as I left. So that turnout mirrors my 2008 turnout experience.

No poll greeters from any campaign, which disappointed me as I wanted to berate COD and Urkel supporters.

  2. Joanne Christian says:

Do I REALLLLY have to vote this year?

  3. anonone says:

    Joanne, republicans vote tomorrow.

  4. anonone says:

BTW, I encourage people to cast a protest vote against Beau Biden. He has not been a good AG and does not deserve any encouragement to seek higher office.

  5. Delaware Dem says:

Joanne, you don’t have to vote. It is your right not to. I would prefer that you do vote, however, as I believe voting should be mandatory, or at the very least perceived by everyone as a civic duty.

And of course, I hope you vote for Chris Coons, as much as that may pain you to vote Democratic. Hey, I voted for Mike Castle once or twice, so we are even now.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

Anonone, to vote against Beau Biden means you want an ignorant teabagger named Doug Campbell in office. And to that I say, no fucking way.

    I can’t stand idiot purists. I really can’t.

  7. Independent says:

” berate COD and Urkel supporters”?

I hope that was joke… I don’t support them either but don’t feel compelled to put another person down because I don’t agree with their stance.

  8. Delaware Dem says:

I do. We are talking about radical theocratic candidates here, who lie with no conscience at the drop of hat, not your everyday moderate or conservative Republican with whom you can respectfully disagree, like Mike Castle.

  9. Independent says:

Agree about the candidates… but the supporters are not the candidates. I presume many of the supporters you might meet at the polls may have been Castle supporters.

If we take the same actions that some on the COD, etc. campaign take – are we any better? I understand and appreciate your frustration, I’ve been mad as hell during this election and feel that COD embarrassed the entire State of Delaware. I trust we will be civil, if dismissive to those we disagree, towards any voter/supporter. It is their right and one of our important freedoms.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

Well, some of her supporters are actually worse than Christine. But I will take your point.

  11. I voted at Emmanual Presbyterian up in Brandywine Hundred. There were three voters there, but no line. It was uneventful, and has me wondering what turnout will be like. People, please get out there and vote.

By the way for the “protest” voters above, you do not have to vote for the other guy, you can just leave it blank and not vote for the candidate you disapprove of. Think of it as the middle path protest vote.

  12. heragain says:

I’ll vote at supper, with my whole family. But off to work the polls for my candidates!

  13. Dana Garrett says:

Just finished voting. The polling place was busy. There was a line of about 6 people in front of me. Nothing unusual happened.

    I voted all Dems.

  14. Another Mike says:

I’ll be voting at lunchtime at the worst polling place in Delaware, the high rise on Gov. Printz Blvd. once known as the Captain’s Deck. If there are more than 3 people there, you’re waiting outside. At least it’s not raining.

  15. JohnnyX says:

Voted like 8:30 ish at the Nur Temple near the 13 / 40 split in New Castle. There was no line on my district’s side when I went in and a small line on the other side (4-5 people?). There were quite a few people leaving when I arrived / arriving when I left though so it seemed like an alright turnout.

As far as the voting goes I went Dem straight down the line except for my state senator Dori Connor who is a moderate R whom I respect (and who incidentally was running unopposed anyway).

  16. anonone says:

Del Dem – see I wrote “protest vote.” I don’t need to be a “purist” and vote straight Democratic. You can blame me if Beau loses by one vote, OKAY?

  17. PSB says:

i vote at Downes Elementary in Newark. Terry Schooley and Chris Coons were there. So was Republican Bill (never found property he didn’t want to pave over) Stritzinger. Normal level of voters, steady trickle.

This must have been an announced Coons stop, for there was a reporter and a photographer. Chris kept his comments positive, including when he explained to an undecided voter (yeh, I know), that if you had a leaky roof, would you hire someone who had never been on a roof and never swung a hammer?

I was prepared to work until 9am for Flowers, but Chip already had two folks with shirts, so I switched to my Coons shirt. Working at McVey Elementary for Kowalko at lunch, and then back to Downes for Flowers (or Coons) for the dinner shift.

Gathering tonight at DoubleTree in Wilmington to watch the results (and celebrate Delaware’s results, and mourn the national results).

  18. Blu_Coq says:

I failed to convince my neighbor to take down his COD sign 🙁

  19. Jason330 says:

Voted at 7:00 am in Odessa. Now do your fucking job obama! No excuses. The country can take another Republican victory two years from now.

  20. a.price says:

ahhhh. 2 years of impeachment hearings, government shut downs, endless filibusters…. the perfect conservative government. Lets jsut hope the Healthcare bill kills God, and the banking reform bill gets us taken over by china…. or else everything the Rs have been saying will seem.. inaccurate.

  21. OpenMinded says:

Voted early in Delaware City, no line. But then again, the only time I’ve ever had a line was in the 2008. It takes a while for people to get moving down there. I’ve just finished sending out wall posts to everyone on my FB friends list. I’m hearing back from a steady number that they’ve voted or are on their way to the polling places.

  22. pandora says:

Just voted. When I entered there was a line of 5 people. When I came out of the voting booth there was a line of over 25!

  23. anonone says:

    anonone met annone today.

  24. I heard from Senator Peterson’s team that turnout in Democratic districts is very high so far.

  25. Auntie Dem says:

I stopped by DelDems HQ’s in New Castle and Newark. Awesome GOTV operations at both. If you find yourself with an hour or two to spare, drop by one of our seven HQ’s across the state and pitch in.

Two lovely friends stopped off for breakfast at Perkins in Newark this morning, wearing their Coons tee-shirts. They were greeted by a couple of thugs who called them baby-killers and tried to intimidate them. Thanks Republicans for licensing these people to misbehave and voice their bigotry. Women, we are in big trouble if this gang wins.

  26. To Get My Vote says:

Voted at Girls Inc. about a half an hour ago. No wait at all. Took a peek at the number on the back of one of the voting booths and it said 61. Hope the numbers start to grow. Dems really need to come out and vote today!!

  27. V says:

Voted this morning with no line in Brandywine Hundred, stopped by six or so other polls in the area. Pretty sure I saw Ginger Gibson in front of the Brandywine Library asking a voter if she voted FOR Chris Coons or AGAINST Christine. Also heard her discussing with supporters outside that there was a decent turnout over at P.S. DuPont Elementary.

  28. meatball says:

Wow, I have never seen turnout like I saw at my polling place. Noon, though.

  29. BellefonteRoss says:

I voted at the Brandywine Hundred fire hall at about 7:45 this morning – next to nobody there (aside from Rep. Kovach, and someone from the Debra Heffernan Campaign).

My fiancee is out volunteering at another polling place in the 6th district (An elementary school, but I forget which one), and has reported a pretty steady stream of voters

  30. Kneejerk Libby says:

Voted at South Dover Elementary around 10:30 this morning, when we figured turnout would be the lightest. Voting there was steady — 3 voting machines all being used, about a 3-minute wait for a machine, someone waiting to take my place when I finished. According to a down-ballot Libertarian candidate whom I know, who was meeting and greeting outside, voting at that location had been steady all morning, slow at the Little Creek polling place, and “insane” at H. Reilly Brown Elementary, which is the next polling place over from mine.

  31. Von Cracker says:

Voted at Westminster church off of Penn Ave. Did it on my way to work. Not too many people there at the time. Had more workers than voters.

First time ever I voted a straight Dem ticket. Glad to see my former classmate up for election. You know, the guy who was in Lucas. Maybe he learned some party tricks from Charlie Sheen. 😉

  32. Bobby Thomson says:

According to the Coons campaign, turnout in New Castle and Kent County is lighter than they want, and there are reports of voter intimidation in Dover. Anyone know anything about that?

  33. BellefonteRoss says:

Bobby: There were a couple people on twitter saying that in Dover there were O’Donnell supporters lining up and stopping people from entering the polling place.

  34. So what is being done about the COD supporters preventing people from entering polling places? Isn’t that blatantly illegal?

  35. BellefonteRoss says:

Said tweet: @chriscoons: Getting reports of O’Donnell supporters forming a line blocking entry to a polling place in Dover. Anyone experience similar?

  36. As far as phone calls went – mostly left messages. Of the live people about half had voted and half said they were going to vote. I didn’t get anyone saying they weren’t voting.

  37. Delaware Dem says:

I would ram those O’Donnell supporters with my body. Failing that, I would ram them with my car. If they die, they die.

  38. Bobby Thomson says:

If true, that is a violation of the Voting Rights Act.

Section 11(b): “No person, whether acting under color of law or otherwise, shall intimidate, threaten, or coerce, or attempt to intimidate, threaten, or coerce any person for voting or attempting to vote, or intimidate, threaten, or coerce, or attempt to intimidate, threaten, or coerce any person for urging or aiding any person to vote or attempt to vote, or intimidate, threaten, or coerce any person for exercising any powers or duties under section 3(a), 6, 8, 9, 10, or 12(e).”

Section 12(a) “Whoever shall deprive or attempt to deprive any person of any right secured by section 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, or 10 or shall violate section 11(a) or (b), shall be fined not more than $5,000, or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.”

Section 12(c) “Whoever conspires to violate the provisions of subsection (a) or (b) of this section, or interferes with any right secured by section 2, 3 4, 5, 7, 10, or 11(a) or (b) shall be fined not more than $5,000, or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.”

Beau needs to earn his keep and stop this shit yesterday.

  39. mediawatch says:

In and out at Bush School in Sharpley just before 1. No line at all, but poll workers said 500 had already voted, a strong turnout. Beth Miller from the NJ was there, and said she was finding good D support.

  40. Mike Matthews says:

    Bobby,

I think we’re all used to DelDem’s hyperbolic rants of violence against Republicans by now. It’s pretty much a running joke around here and by this time I think it’s just funny. You must be new…lol.

  41. Joe Cass says:

My polling place is Eisenberg Elementary off of Landers lane. The workers said its been a great turnout. Straight D’s. Very few people about, a single Navarro supporter.

  42. PSB says:

got back from shift at McVey Elementary in Newark. Slow, steady stream of voters. Kowalko arrived there as I ended my shift.

  43. Blu_Coq says:

Good steady turn out at LACC in the city. Lots of Bovell’s folks, and Keeley’s folks, and at least one disinterested O’Donnell sign holder. What’s the going rate for street money? I forgot to ask.

  44. Joanne Christian says:

OK Deldem I voted. And I’d vote for Chris Coons for anything he wants now that Mike Castle has moved on. Hear that Chris? If it’s not your time now–I promise to be back and help you to whatever you want to be next time. Sorry for the late start.

BTW–Townsend was absolutely brisk with voters all morning until about 1pm. I waited in line around 10:30am behind about 8 people.

  45. Jason330 says:

Speaking of Castle, Michael Quaranta just signed on with The Podesta Group. The lobbyist revolving door keeps on spinning.

  46. BellefonteRoss says:

http://production.wboc.com/elections/ <— Realtime Election Results (Well, last update seems to be 12:06, but close-ish to realtime). Not sure how accurate though – the GOP is doing better than I had expected in a lot of races.

  47. Delaware Dem says:

Um, BellefonteRoss, those are not the election results. Election results are not released by the state until 8 pm. WBOC is just running a test page for tonight.

  48. BellefonteRoss says:

Arg, damnit. Someone sent it over on twitter and I’ve been refreshing like mad for 20 minutes heh.

  49. Bobby Thomson says:

Mike, I was responding to Unstable Isotope.

  50. Another Mike says:

Voted around 2 p.m. at the senior citizen place on Gov. Printz. No line or wait, but a worker there said turnout has been heavy, already reaching what they had expected for the entire day. The only volunteers outside were wearing Deb Heffernan t-shirts.

  51. anon says:

Have any of you noticed there is “no get out the vote in Wilmington”. Not one union person, not one supporter of our candidates are at these polling places? What happened to the DNC money, the Senatorial Campaign committee money? Did the dems take the city for granted? Same thing in Kent there is no one out there pushing the vote, but Odonnel and Bonnini campaign workers. If we lose the democratic party, unions have a lot to answer for!

  52. anon says:

Voted at McKean HS, in and out very quickly with about three other voters in the house while I was there. I hope it was busier in the morning and will get busy again later.

  53. paratrooper18 says:

I voted at Cape Henlopen in Lewes and it was very steady. One of the voting places which I would consider heavy COD was not very busy. But I will know later when my wife votes after work.

I was wondering about any efforts to get out the vote in Wilmington. I mean for Coons that is where he can easily make up for any downstate boost for COD.

I still do not believe this will be close. I mean not within 10points. This is not the primary, and it would take more than lower DE coming out very strong.

  54. June says:

I was at DelDems doing number tracking for Chris Coons campaign. Numbers were called in from the polls at 10 am. The highest number of voters from one ED was from somewere in Red Lion area with 400 voters. No other ED was close to that number. The other Red Lion area numbers were also very high. YOu know what that means – COD’s people are coming out in droves.

  55. pandora says:

Anon, I’ve had Dem canvassers at my city door for the last three days – last one arrived this morning immediately after I voted. We have a strong GOTV in this part of the city.

  56. anon says:

Pandora: BS, several of us are going to the polls. There is not ONE union person, NO one at the POLLING place handing out lit pieces or greeting voters, except Bonini and Odonnell. Prove otherwise.

  57. pandora says:

Whoa, take a big breath. Outside my polling place there were several big guys (I have no idea if they were union, or not since I didn’t ask) with Beau, Coons and Carney T-shirts – and they greeted me. There was no one representing O’Donnell or Bonini.

I’m not sure how I prove that.

And I was visited by 3 Dem GOTV people.

  58. V says:

    http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20101102/NEWS/101102025/Election+commissioner+says+O+Donnell+rallying+is+too+loud

OD supporters being disruptive in Kent. Haven’t found an article on that Dover twitter thing.

  59. Miscreant says:

Voted in Milton this morning at 9:45. Moderate turn out at that time. O’Donnell goons (little, chubby, old ladies) had a table set up out in the parking lot. They were behaving themselves. No Black Panthers or SEIU in sight.

  60. cassandra m says:

Anon doesn’t know Wilmington very well, or he would have recognized the names of City polling places as folks above described the scenes. There were Dem workers at my city polling place early this AM and there have been workers at every polling place in the city I’ve been to today. So thanks for playing.

  61. TommyWonk says:

I voted at 7:15 this morning at Highland Elementary School in Wilmington. I was in line behind about a dozen voters. I shook Chris Coons by the hand as he was arriving with Annie and their kids.

I’ve seen workers at polling places around town, along with the paid O’Donnell sign holders, who seem to be managed by City Councilman Mike Brown.

  62. Blu_Coq says:

I have to wonder if candidates have finally begun to think that paying someone to stand outside a polling place probably does not sway many (any?) voters. I think it’s different if you see someone you know from the neighborhood, but I always wondered if those rent-a-sign holders were effective.

  63. Joanne Christian says:

I was between 2 polling places in Townsend for about 5 hours ( in a totally unrelated scholarship fundraising effort), what surprised me most were the number of elderly voters coming out. Not just senior citizens, but those assisted by family members, or caregivers with assistive devices of walkers, wheelchairs, and/or oxygen in tow. They definitely made the effort to come out and vote, and shame some of us younger, more able-bodied citizens who perhaps may neglect our civic duty and privilege to do so. If any conversation was heard, it was without exception about the inability of a fixed income to get by in these times–very telling–but for which candidate?

Oh….and the only candidates I saw were Quinn Johnson and Bruce Ennis. No union folks at all–just mostly neighborhood faces.

  64. Having people standing at the polls is at the bottom of my election day checklist. It’s all about GOTV. Identifying your voters (which should have ended this weekend) and then making sure that they vote.

People who only volunteer on Election Day and want to feel like they’re doing something to help are fine at the polling places. But nobody’s reading the lit and nobody’s changing their minds. So it’s basically keeping the volunteers busy until the campaign gathers for the results.

Campaigns short on volunteers should consider greeters as the lowest possible priority. Making phone calls and going door-to-door are far more important.

  65. ek says:

I voted at Glasgow Conservation Center around 3 p.m. No line, but they told me it had been very steady all day. Two volunteers out front. One made no effort, the other was a very pleasant lady handing out cap snapflers for Earl Jaques.

  66. meatball says:

That reminds me of what a friend told me about during the 2004 election. She worked in a locked, walkie-talky Alzeimers unit and family made the effort to drag them out to vote.

  67. anonone says:

Yeah, but once they got there, they couldn’t remember who to vote for.

    “Where’s that Roosevelt fellow?”

  68. Delaware Dem says:

Is it wrong that I laughed hysterically at that?

  69. V says:

I helped my 91 year old grandmother vote in 2008, wheelchair and all. She was very passionate, and voted straight ticket Dem (with no words from me). She told me she wanted to “teach those repubs a lesson” and switched her vote away from Castle. My grandmother was awesome.

  70. Joanne Christian says:

Reminds me of the time my husband drove the deaf, elderly widow across the street to the polls to vote ( she doesn’t drive)–she shouted out from behind the curtain–“who was I supposed to vote for?” !!!!

  71. I got an email from the Coons campaign that they’ve seen a surge in voting in Democratic districts. I’ve got my fingers crossed.

  72. xstryker says:

I made GOTV calls all day, and things seemed to be going pretty well to me. A number of democratic voters said they were pissed off by getting a large number of calls from O’Donnell supporters – guess they aren’t targeting very well.

  73. Joe Cass says:

I got a call from the nutjob campaign tonight, poor lass caught both barrels of my grade A invective

  74. O’Donnell wasn’t targeting at all. Got three calls from the loonies today…and three mailers on Monday from O’Donnell. Two were exactly the same, touting her NRA bona fides. I’m only in their target audience to the extent that they’d literally like to ‘target’ me.
