It was actually a fun ride. For some reason I immediately knew what was happening, and (probably stupidly), I was not afraid and was able to absorb the experience, just sitting in my upstairs office. I felt safe and felt like it wasn’t going to get any worse.
About 10-15 seconds of pretty good shaking, with teacups rattling, then another 10-15 seconds of gentle rolling or vibration with no objects rattling. Now I know what they mean by the “liquefication” of the earth. Toward the end it definitely had that feeling, like the house was riding on a giant shaking mud pie.
“It’s one of the largest that we’ve had there,” USGS seismologist Lucy Jones told CNN. Aftershocks were a concern, she said. “People should be expecting (them), especially over the next hour or two,” she added.
We felt nothing down in Charlotte, NC, but the people on the phone from various other places on the East Coast (Philly, Baltimore, DC, NYC, Pittsburgh) all started shouting.

I was on the beach at Cape Henelopen. An odd group dynamic played out about a minute after the shake. One guy on the beach said, “Did you feel that?” Then almost in unison, everybody within earshot of that one guy said something similar to, “Oh yeah, I thought it was just me.” Then, with the ice broken, we were all tight.
