Scaling It Back

The RNC has decided to scale back its convention next week, they say to make it a call to service rather than a political celebration. That is likely a good thing — americablog already notes that CNN has started the split screen competition and major portions of their program have decided not to come (Bush, Cheney, Schwarzenegger, Crist and others, not including all of those threatened repubs who found something else to do.
So the first day is largely canceled. They’ll do whatever housekeeping they need to do, and that, I predict, includes rewriting their history with Katrina. The Jed Report speculates on how different the Katrina outcome may have been if that hurricane had happened in an election year.

It was their only choice. I can’t wait for the Republitroll spin on this one.
They were really stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. They obviously can’t cancel it completely – these things take a lot of time to plan and prepare and you can’t get that money back. They can’t be seen partying too hard when people are suffering. I think they’re doing the right thing.
However, I don’t think McCain and his team should be down there. I think they’re more of a distraction than a help. There’s not much a presidential candidate can do there but stay out of the way of the professionals.
I’m hoping that Gustav continues to weaken and we don’t have a disaster like before. At least the worst forecasts won’t occur!
Politically though, although they’re doing the right thing I believe McCain may suffer a bit just because the Republicans won’t get much of a chance to make their case to the American people.
Didn’t I read somewhere some folks were praying for rain when Barack gave his acceptance speech? A case of be careful what you wish/pray for? This proves beyond a doubt that, if there is a God, s/he has a sense of humor.

Are you kidding me , McCain gets the two most unpopular people on the planet not to speak on his behalf and that,s a negative. I`m beginning to think that McCain is either the smartest or luckiest human being I have ever seen in 40 years of following politics.
