Okay. I’m a dork. Can someone explain the significance of the sports guys and this countdown?

  2. nemski says:

Um . . . they all have numbers on their jerseys.

  3. jason330 says:

    I’m terrible at puzzles.

  4. RSmitty says:

    What?! Unitis played for Indianapolis?
    (poke poke)

  5. Dorian Gray says:

Von Cracker was right… he predicted Johnny U!

  6. Von Cracker says:

    Per usual! 😉

Drawing a blank on 18 though!

  7. Dorian Gray says:

Me too. The only thing I can think of is Peyton Manning. Maybe looking at a Colts QB has the image stuck in my head.

  8. Bob Costas says:

    Dave Cowans

  9. liberalgeek says:

Phil Jackson was #18. Very Zen.

  10. RSmitty says:

    Did some research…very thin pickings at #18. Wasn’t Kiko Garcia #18 for the ’83 (’84?) Phils? 😀

Anyway, if it’s HOF’s-only, that takes Peyton out. Here are some names I found (Bob Costas (hah) got one of them):
    Charlie Joiner (NFL)
    Dave Cowens (NBA)
    Denis Savard (NHL)

  11. liberalgeek says:

Don Larsen wore 18 during his perfect game in the world series… That is my pick.

  12. RSmitty says:

Maybe it’ll be Terry Spence of the 18th. 😯

  13. Von Cracker says:

I’ll make a play on Nemski’s true passion:

    GINGER!

  14. Dorian Gray says:

VC – Link doesn’t work, but since I know Nemski and I know who Ginger is…

If I open this page tomorrow and see Paul Scholes I am not going to be happy!! 🙂

  15. jason330 says:

    ..from Gilligan’s Island?

I was a Mary Ann Summers person.

  16. nemski says:

Poor Jason, VC and DG are talking soccer now. I promise they’ll type slower in the future for you. 🙂

  17. RSmitty says:

Oh no, now he’s going to start banning soccer fans. Good job there, nemski.

  18. pandora says:

Didn’t Roberto Baggio wear #18 at one time? I know he’s known for #10…

    Forza Italia!

  19. Another Mike says:

Archie Manning wore 18 with the Saints. We’ll forget his time with the Oilers and Vikings.

  20. RSmitty says:

    Hey, I was comment #18! It’s me! It’s me!

  21. Dorian Gray says:

Pandora – See now you’re striking a nerve! Baggio is my favorite player of all time. When he missed the penalty in the ’94 WC Final I cried, face-down, on my lawn for 3 hours.

The 1993 Ballon d’Or winner did wear number 18 for Milan in ’96-’97 and frankly I was sure that I was the only person in the United States that would know this. I don’t know what to say!!

    Forza Azzuri!!

  22. Von Cracker says:

The link worked for me, DG.

but you knew it anyway….of course.

  23. pandora says:

One of the best times I had was watching Italy win the World Cup while I was in Rome. The city went nuts and I was part of it. We sat in a little out door cafe (eating, and drinking limoncello!) while the owner dragged his ancient TV outside so all could watch. Great memories.

So… since Baggio did wear #18 (and DG and I have bonded in essere perfettamente d’accordo) I vote for his pic tomorrow. Are you listening, Nemski?

  24. liberalgeek says:

I thought we were limiting this to sports. If we are expanding it to include soccer, can I suggest a tractor-trailer with 18 wheels? 8)

    ducking…

  25. Dorian Gray says:

Pandora – Sono molto impressionato! Tifa per quale squade nel Serie A? Tifo per Juventus e qualche volta Fiorentina.

LG – For a worldy man you disappoint me. 🙂

  26. Von Cracker says:

    Where’s the emoticon list?

    Mr. Cool?

  27. liberalgeek says:

LOL. I kid my friends that don’t know how to use their hands…

  28. Von Cracker says:

    found it!

    😈

  29. pandora says:

Don’t be too impressed! Discussing which soccer teams I’m a fan of – in Italian! – is beyond my translation skills! I can order intelligently in Italian, understand directions, and bring any street vendor from Rome to Siena to tears with my bartering skills.

Shame we have to wait until 2010.

  30. G Rex says:

Paul Scholes? Sure he’s Man U scum, but it gets the AIG logo back up.

  31. G Rex says:

Doh! Dorian beat me to it.

  32. nemski says:

The pressure is just unbelievable . . . I feel a bit like Joe the Plumber.

  33. pandora says:

    BAGGIO! BAGGIO! BAGGIO!

DG, where are you? You must vote. Hell, we need to freep this poll! 🙂

  34. Dorian Gray says:

HA! To be perfectly honest I am about at the same level. Usually when the conversation gets away from me I just say. “Parla piano per favore. Parlo italiano solo un po”. 🙂

  35. Dorian Gray says:

Pandora – The only issue is we’d have to see Baggio in the rossoneri to see # 18 rather than the bianconeri of Juve or the azzuri of the NT (because there he wore the # 10).

His time at the San Siro was not his finest hour. 🙁 Damn Berlusconi

  36. pandora says:

I just smile and say “mi dispiace” a LOT.

    BAGGIO!

  37. pandora says:

Baggio is eh (picture dramatic Italian hand gesture) Baggio. It is simply enough he wore the number, simply enough that he is.

    Capisci, Nemski?

  38. Dorian Gray says:

I don’t trust Nemski. The guy supports ManU. If we get Scholes tomorrow I’m changiny my screen name and trolling on this blog!

  39. jason330 says:

Baggio has to be DQ’ed. He is wearing 10 in every picture I can find.

  40. nemski says:

I don’t know what’s sadder, me posting a countdown or 40+ comments about who number 18 will be.

  41. G Rex says:

Baggio has to be DQ’ed for having a mullet.

    Dennis Bergkamp for #10!

  42. pandora says:

Nice try, G Rex. But if we can’t have Baggio for #18, then we have to have him for #10!

If not, I will flood DL with gun posts.
