Friday Afternoon Bacon Blogging — Corn Edition

pa1a02_grilled_corn_medThe farmer’s markets and roadside stands now have local corn, which has to be one of the best things about summer. Just in case you need some inspiration for cooking that corn, next time you are gilling, perhaps Bacon-Wrapped Corn will do the trick. This isn’t an especially outrageous use of bacon — but is certainly a good excuse for including for bacon for dinner! And if you aren’t taking advantage of the local farm stands and farmer’s markets you are missing a great opportunity. Real tomatos, local squashes and local fresh-picked fruit are all on hand here. Many grown with a minimum of chemicals, too. Plus you can probably wrap all of it in bacon to put on the grill!

For those of you allergic to veggies, perhaps you’d be happier with Bacon-Wrapped Corn Dogs. If you do this, let us know how this turns out — I’ll never know what is appealing about a Corn Dog.

USASpending.gov

usa-spendinggov

This is a relaunch of www.fedspending.org, and is meant to provide information to on how our money is spent at the Federal Level. There’s interesting data here, including info on:

  • contract actions (you can check by company, see the list of Top 100, or look at contracts in your CD, among others)
  • micropurchases
  • spending in various sorts you can define
  • loans direct and guaranteed
  • and a whole section on IT purchasing.

There’s more at the site with varying ways to sort out this data, and some discussion of Data Quality.  This is not meant to be the final version of this site, with many more refinements (probably not enough) and additions to come.  For a first shot, this is pretty impressive — and impressive that they took an application already developed by OMB Watch to build from.

Another site, www.data.gov, is in beta (but is live, mostly) and seems to seek to be a complete repository of many of the datasets developed by or maintained by the Government.  I can’t tell you how complete this is — no idea if datasets maintained by contractors for varying reasons are here — but this is pretty promising too.  It will be really useful if this repository is complete (minus black program data I suppose), and it refreshed as the datasets are updated.  These are just datasets, so you’ll need to have the right software to make use of it (like GIS for those datasets specific to it) and need to be able to interpret some of this, but this may be real progress on transparency.

Dr. Howard Dean Talks Health System Reform

Great interview in Esquire:

ESQ: Speaking of the Obama plan, you’re even stronger than he has been lately in support of the public plan. You say that without it, it’s not reform.

HD: It’s not. It’s a waste of time. Don’t pretend you’re going to do health-insurance reform unless you’re really going to change the system. The discussions in the Senate have not been about changing the system.

ESQ: They seem to be worried about preserving the status quo.

HD: Washington is the most conservative town in America. Its culture is the most resistant to change except a few religious cults.

ESQ: [Laughter]

HD: It’s true! It’s absolutely true.

ESQ: You say that the public plan shouldn’t be able to dip into general government reserves to subsidize its operations. But the Republicans say it will.

HD: The Republicans just make things up out of whole cloth. Nothing they say about health care is true. It’s all just nonsense and fears and what-ifs. It doesn’t happen. First of all, Medicare doesn’t dip into government reserves. It has never happened. It might happen in 10 years if they don’t cut benefits or raise taxes, but so far, never in the history of America has a program like Medicare used public reserves. The Republican tactic is to raise objections because they never have anything positive to say themselves.

ESQ: In the book you ask, “Is health insurance really health insurance or an extension of the things that have been happening on Wall Street?”

HD: Think about it. What the big insurance companies have done is deny claims just so they can improve their bottom line. That’s just extraordinary.

Excellent stuff. As they say, Go Read The Whole Thing. Dr. Dean is in fine form and seems to be enjoying himself.

Rally for Health Care Action — Comment Rescue

This notice is courtesy of PBaumbach in the Carper thread:

If you would like to vent at Carper (or at least his office), there is a rally on Thursday organized by Tom and Alice Davis:

http://pol.moveon.org/event/healthcareaction/94316

*Here are the details:

Go if you can take the time to do so. It is important to let Carper especially know that we want him to represent us rather than his funders for a change.

The Department of Law Will Save Her — More Palin Follies

So the Quitta from Wasilla is all over the news this AM and finds herself answering a question from an ABC interviewer wanting to know why she would step down because of so-called ethics investigations knowing that this doesn’t let up in higher office…..the reply?

But as for whether another pursuit of national office, as she did less than a year ago when she joined Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., in the race for the White House, would result in the same political blood sport, Palin said there is a difference between the White House and what she has experienced in Alaska. If she were in the White House, she said, the “department of law” would protect her from baseless ethical allegations.

“I think on a national level, your department of law there in the White House would look at some of the things that we’ve been charged with and automatically throw them out,” she said.

Department of Law?

Department of LAW?

This, my friends, is the person that John McCain thought would be able to run the government of the United States. A woman who has NO IDEA what the government of the United States looks like, much less does.

Extra Fun Points: Deadspin diagrams the basketball moves crazily detailed by the Quitta at her press conference.

More Like This Please! — David Shuster Asks Sen Carper Tough Questions

….on the health insurance bills in Congress. He specifically tossed the amount of money Carper has taken from the various health care and pharm industries at Senator Carper to ask him how it effects his vote. All told, Carper answered very little of Shuster’s questions. Take a look:

Virtual Food Drive — Food Bank of Delaware

Food Bank of Delaware is holding a Virtual Food Drive this weekend. Just put some goods (or dollars) in your cart to donate, checkout your cart and you’ve donated to the Food Bank.

This holiday weekend as we all spend time with our families and friends it’s a good reminder that the Food Bank is providing a vital service to Delaware families who need some extra help in this horrid economy.

Help them out if you can.
