DEGOP Rep. Lyndon Yearick’s basic point is that we need to learn to live with mass shootings

Permit-to-purchase gun laws are linked to fewer firearm homicides.

State laws that require gun purchasers to obtain a license contingent on passing a background check performed by state or local law enforcement are associated with a 14 percent reduction in firearm homicides…

But the DEGOP is in the hands of maniacs and gun extremists.

Ineffective Laws Won’t Reduce Gun Violence by State Rep. Lyndon Yearick

Mental health services need to be expanded, especially in public schools, so signs of illness and alienation can be spotted and addressed before leading to destructive actions and shattered lives.

California arguably has the country’s most restrictive gun control laws, which failed to prevent last month’s tragedies.

Dave Lawson is old.  Is he the kind of old guy who thinks making $150,000 means you smoke cigars and wear a silk top hat?  Yes.  Is he the kind of old guy who never tips a server more than $1.00, so his family always has to quietly re-tip behind his back?  What do you think?

Sen Lawson Attacks Del Tech Admin for Making over $150K Each

DOVER, Del.- The battle for financial stability continues for Delaware’s teachers and three colleges in the state have recently made their case for more money.

One of them, Delaware Technical Community College, is looking to increase teacher salaries.

Del. Tech Academic Affairs VP, Justina Thomas, said more money would help secure the school’s future.

“We’ve actually been trying to stabilize faculty salaries for some time to remain competitive in the education industry,” said Thomas. “Retention of all of our employees is extremely important to us and we are in the midst, like everyone else, finding ourselves with some vacancies, and in recruitment mode.”

Del. Tech President, Mark Brainard, presented his budget proposal to the Joint Finance Committee earlier this month. The meeting did not go without controversy though.

Senator Dave Lawson (R-Dist. 15), was not quick to hop on board.

“The top eight positions, not including yours Mr. President, comes to about $1.2 million for eight people,” said Sen. Lawson during the meeting. “Is that justifiable?”

New medical marijuana location is the fourth in Sussex County, 11th in state

After it took three years for the number of medical marijuana dispensaries in Sussex County to increase from two to three, it’s only going to be a little more than three months for a fourth option. Fresh Delaware is set to open Tuesday, Feb. 14, in Seaford.

Availability of medical marijuana to the county’s patients has been slow, but steady – First State Compassion opened its Lewes location in May 2017; Columbia Care opened its Rehoboth location in October 2019; and Best Buds opened its Georgetown location in October 2022.

Poll Results – Biden’s Takeout Choices

Where should Biden get his takeout?

Touch of Italy takes the top spot.  S.O. likes it, but given a decent grocery store, I think I can do “red sauce” Italian just as well and for significantly less money.

I’ve never eaten there so I can say if Agave’s second place finish was just or unjust.

Two Baltimore Ave eateries tied for third – Frank & Louie’s Italian Specialties & Cafe Azafran.  I don’t understand going to Rehoboth, then eating out on the highway, so if this was for “best place to eat” I think the results would have been flipped.

This Week’s Poll

“Ron DeSanctimonious” isn’t doing the trick, as Trump is now trying out new derisive nicknames for the probable GOP nominee.

Former President Donald Trump is trying out new nicknames for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, including “Meatball Ron,” per The New York Times. [Ironic given Trump’s fat ass]

Trump has used the insult, which is meant as a jab at DeSantis’ appearance, in private conversations, The Times reported on Sunday.

Trump has also called DeSantis “Shutdown Ron” in private, per The Times. This is a reference to DeSantis’ March 2020 executive order that temporarily closed bars and nightclubs in Florida because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DL Open Thread Monday February 13 2023

Here are a couple of articles that I had lined up for the open thread.   I’m too disgusted to finish it.

Regarding the game – the NFL may not be rigged, after that shitty call last night I have a lot more understanding of people think it is.

The NFL referees have been one of the biggest stories of the 2022 season, and that only increased in the playoffs. With the officiating under fire, Roger Goodell and the NFL decided to assign the ref with the most penalty calls the last two seasons, Carl Cheffers, to Super Bowl 57. And after calling a relatively controversy-free contest, Cheffers and his team became the story of the game. A late, soft penalty call gifted the game to the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles and sent “rigged” rocketing up the Twitter trending rankings.

Two outlets tracking reactions to Tuesday’s State of the Union address show that President Joe Biden’s speech was received well by roughly seven in 10 Americans while also moving public opinion in his direction. In fact, both outlets found that Biden’s appeal to the country moved the greater public, along with independents and soft partisans in his direction by roughly 20 points or even more.

CNN’s poll found that a 72% majority of Americans reacted positively to Biden’s address, with the percentage of viewers who said Biden’s policies would move the country in the right direction increasing from 52% before the speech to 71% after the speech.

If you’ve wondering who’s behind those warm, fuzzy, and seemingly inclusive Jesus Gets Us ads that are all over TV, did you have “shadowy Christian billionaires” on your bingo card. One of them is the virulently anti-LGBTQ Hobby Lobby guy. And those ads are about to appear during the Super Bowl.

Happy Darwin Day.

A Little History of American Style Football

Advancing a ball while being opposed by a team working to advance that ball in the opposite direction goes back a long way. According to legend, the first time this took place Britain was after the defeat of a Danish Prince. After decapitating the Prince, they decided to kick around his head.

A stylized version of this celebration became Mob football. By the 8th century, a good portion of the British Isles were playing it.

The aptly named “mob football” had an indeterminate number of players, almost no rules, and wasn’t even played on a field. Hundreds of players, usually members of two neighboring villages, would attempt to get the ball into the designated area by any means necessary during matches that could last all day.

The most well preserved version of mob football is probably Calcio Storico “historic football” played annually in Florance Italy. In Calcio Storico two teams of 27 players head-butt, punch, elbow, and basically bare knuckle brawl the opposition while trying to score. Due to often fatal injuries, sucker punches and kicks to the head are now banned.  Also, all the fighting must be one on one. It is against the rules for more than one player to attack an opponent.

For the rest of the world, more rules against outright violence were enacted and the game took different forms depending on the rules. A version of mob football was played at American colleges in the 1800’s with schools choosing from a grab bag of rugby-style rules depending on their preference. On November 6, 1869, players from Princeton and Rutgers held the first intercollegiate football game in New Brunswick, New Jersey, playing a soccer-style game with rules adapted from the London Football Association. In order to make traveling to other colleges to play worthwhile, a more widely agreed upon set of rules was required.  That void was filled by a guy named Walter Camp.

As a Yale undergraduate and medical student from 1876 to 1881, Camp played halfback and served as team captain, equivalent to head coach at the time. Even more importantly, he was the guiding force on the rules board of the newly formed Intercollegiate Football Association (IFA).

Thanks to Camp, the IFA made two key innovations to the fledgling game: It did away with the opening “scrummage” or “scrum” and introduced the requirement that a team give up the ball after failing to move down the field a specified yardage in a certain number of “downs.” Among the other innovations Camp introduced were the 11-man team, the quarterback position, the line of scrimmage, offensive signal-calling and the scoring scale used in football today. In addition to his work with the rules board, Camp coached the Yale team to a 67-2 record from 1888 to 1892—all while working as an executive at a watch-manufacturing firm.

Chris Coons is Simply Lying About Not Knowing About QAnon

Ed Note: This post was first published on Mar 24, 2022 at 08:04.  It is now getting some hits so I’m moving it up to see what’s up.

Consultants have been telling Republican members of Congress to say that they don’t know what QAnon is when asked about it, and its influence on the party. Chris Coons is also adopting that strategy.

Michael McAuliff
@mmcauliff

Question: Are you concerned Republicans may be trying to play to the Q-anon base?
Sen. Chris Coons: “I wouldn’t understand what an appeal to the Q-anon base looks like. So if that’s what’s going on, I’m missing it. Because frankly, that’s not a frame that resonates with me.”

This is derived from the GOP’s successful strategy of denying that they follow the news when asked about something Trump said.

Biden delivered a good speech – Republicans acted like a bunch of clowns, as expected

I didn’t watch the speech, but reviews are good.  Biden was his usual steady self, but also lively and energetic.  He was up for a taking on the dumbfucks in the GOP head-on.  Bravo.  They aren’t accustomed to that.

Not that it matters.  U.S politics hasn’t been about what Democrats do or say for a while now.  Steadily and seriously, Biden and Obama both rescued the country from the disastrous terms of erratic Republican clowns. But you wont hear anything about it in the news.  Short memories.

No, our politics is all about the clown show.   The media LOVES the excitement of the clown show. They love asking Democrats to respond to the clown show.  And so Democrats always appear to be reacting, rarely acting.  And yet,  the clown show is exactly why Democrats keep wining and Republicans keep losing.

There are still Americans that want our politics to be steady, serious and sober.  Most Americans take one look at this clown show, and say  “I’ll take whatever the <I>’not this clown show'</I>  option is please.”

Only  Chris Coons keeps trying to pretend that the Republicans are not a clown show.  Who can say why?  I think he gets off on it.

Arizona got Bonini’ed.  One slight difference this donk and Bonini is that Bonini always voted against budgets because “very strict adherence to principles” while this person… wait, no they are the same.

Az State Rep will vote “no” on budget (and everything else) unless 2020 Election is “redone”

The Republican-led effort to pass a “skinny budget” has hit a momentary roadblock in the Arizona House of Representatives, where a sole Republican’s refusal to vote for the spending package doomed the budget.

Rep. Liz Harris, R-Chandler, voted no on the first bill that is part of the major Republican budget proposal that merely extends much of the $18 billion budget passed last year for another 12 months. Republicans have a one-vote majority in the chamber, so her opposition meant the bill failed.

Harris did not respond to multiple requests for comment as to why she voted no on the budget bill. Harris, a local real estate agent turned election “fraud” investigator is most famous for conducting a highly flawed canvass of the presidential election in an attempt to prove voter “fraud.”

Her vote against the GOP spending plan may be the freshman lawmaker following through on a pledge she made late last year that she would not vote for any legislation until the 2022 election is redone. Harris has been a vocal proponent of the false claims that the 2020 and 2022 elections were marred by fraud and rigged against Republicans.

Where is the Coonsian Super Secret Bi-Partisan Caucus?  It is as if, outsides of Coons’s fevered bipartisan brain, there never was such a thing.

“Centrist Republicans” nowhere near the center on debt ceiling

WASHINGTON — A key centrist House Republican is ruling out a fallback option to avert a calamitous debt default, which would require a small number of GOP lawmakers to sidestep Speaker Kevin McCarthy and work with Democrats on a legislative solution.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., said Monday evening that using a procedural tool known as a discharge petition to force a House vote on a “clean” debt limit increasewas dead on arrival. The mechanism requires 218 signatories — in the current House, that means at least six Republicans and all Democrats — to ensure a vote on a bill, even if the speaker doesn’t want to bring it up.

No Florida Youth Pastors were harmed in the creation of this blog post.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis filed a complaint against the Orlando Philharmonic Plaza Foundation alleging that the nonprofit group held a sexually explicit drag show in December in the presence of minors.

The complaint, filed Friday through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco and shared with NBC News, alleges the foundation violated Florida statutes on lewdness and maintaining a public nuisance and seeks to revoke its liquor license.

The complaint is at least the second that DeSantis’ administration has filed against a venue for hosting a drag performance in the presence of minors. In July, his administration filed a similar complaint against Miami restaurant R House, citing a 1947 state Supreme Court case that found “men impersonating women” in the context of “suggestive and indecent” performances constitutes a public nuisance.

Problem: states’ rights includes states protecting abortion access. The lunatic right’s solution: have a single openly partisan activist judge summarily declare the pill illegal nationwide

Swiss, jeez.

Switzerland pivots to allow re-export of weapons to Ukraine

The leader of the center-right FDP party, Thierry Burkart, has submitted a motion to the government to allow arms re-exports to countries with similar democratic values to Switzerland.

“We want to be neutral, but we are part of the western world,” said Burkart.

He added that Switzerland should not support Russia.

“We shouldn’t have the veto to stop others helping Ukraine,” he told journalists.  “If we do that, we support Russia – which is not a neutral position.”

Reuters writes that Swiss social democrats and green liberals adhere to a similar opinion.

The Swiss Flag was first used as a national flag during the Napoleonic Wars by general Niklaus Franz von Bachmann, and as regimental flag of all cantonal troops from 1841. It is the only national flag that is square.

A-hole on A-hole violence

Where is the a-hole community leadership?  Why aren’t they condemning this?

Trump is smearing DeSantis as a groomer

The very stable geniuses at Truth Social are upset DeSantis intends to run against Trump in the 2024 presidential election. So they are resorting to calling him a “groomer,” which is MAGA-speak for “people I don’t like.”

Someone posted a blurry photo of what might be a young DeSantis sitting with three women of indeterminate age, along with the caption, “Here is Ron DeSanctimonious grooming high school girls with alcohol as a teacher.” That’s all it took for Trump to dutifully retweet (or is it Retruth as they say there) the Truth Social post, with the sly comment “That’s not Ron, is it? He would never do such a thing!”

I love it when fanatics attack each other for failing their purity test.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf to Speak at the Wilmington Public Library Thursday, February 9th at 6pm

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association for nine years with the Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings and Vancouver Grizzlies.

In 1991, he converted to Islam, changing his name officially in 1993. A few years later, Abdul-Rauf found himself embroiled in significant controversy when he began to refuse to stand for the national anthem prior to games. “I’m a Muslim first and a Muslim last,” Abdul-Rauf has said of his actions. “My duty is to my creator, not to nationalistic ideology.”

He did it quietly, before the media turned it into a firestorm. He was suspended in 1996 but he’d begun to think about his protest of American oppression and tyranny many months prior. After his suspension, Abdul-Rauf compromised with the league and stood, but simultaneously said a silent Islamic prayer, closing his eyes and looking downward.

To learn more about Abdul-Rauf’s life, join us at the library on Thursday, February 9th at 6pm.

*NEW: Valet parking is now available the evening of.

*This event does not require registration or tickets and seating is on a first come first serve basis.

Here is the Showtime’s blurb about the documentary:

Raw and unflinching examination of the courageous life of basketball star and social justice activist Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. Born Chris Jackson, he overcame tremendous adversity to reach the NBA and found his true calling when he converted to Islam. His decision not to stand for the national anthem, however, turned him from prodigy to pariah. Told candidly by Abdul-Rauf himself more than 20 years later it’s the remarkable story of one man who kept the faith and paved the way for a social justice movement.

For some, Fox News retained a wisp of legitimacy for a while by pretending the “news” was not the same as the “entertainment/opinion” programming. They’ve dispensed with the pretending.

Fox News Goes Full On Qanon

Fox News contributor Sean Duffy dropped all veneer of analytic speculation by declaring his opinion that President Joe Biden is “compromised” by the Chinese.

The Republican former congressman and co-host of Fox Business’ The Bottom Line was Outnumbered’s #OneLuckyGuy on Monday, and he joined the panel to discuss the push for Congress to ban TikTok and cut off the data collection from the Chinese-owned social media platform. The topic drew renewed interest after the U.S. shot down a Chinese spy balloon last week after it floated across a large swath of the country.

“What’s the Matter with Delaware? A Book Talk & Discussion Event”

Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 4:00pm

Via Zoom (Registration required)

At this event, author Hal Weitzman will discuss his recent book,  What’s the Matter with Delaware?: How the First State Has Favored the Rich, Powerful, and Criminal – and How It Costs Us All, in conversation with University of Delaware faculty, and the audience.

The legal home to over a million companies, Delaware has more registered businesses than residents. Why do virtually all of the biggest corporations in the United States register there? Why do so many small companies choose to set up in Delaware rather than their home states? Why do wealthy individuals form multiple layers of private companies in the state? What’s the Matter with Delaware? reveals the systematic enterprise that lies behind the state’s business-friendly veneer – and the global consequences of Delaware’s influence on corporate America.

Hal Weitzman is executive director for intellectual capital at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He is editor-in-chief of Chicago Booth Review and host of The Big Question, Booth’s monthly discussion series. From 2000 to 2012 he was a reporter and editor at the Financial Times; his reporting has also  appeared in The Economist, The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, The Miami Herald, New Statesman, The Irish Times, Slate, and Politico.

Commenters: Dr. Stephen Metraux (The Biden School) and  Dr. Dael A. Norwood (History Department).

This event is co-sponsored by the History Department, the Hagley Program in the History of Capitalism, Technology, and Culture, the Political Science & International Relations Department, and the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy & Administration at the University of Delaware.

We hope you can join us on March 1st!

Note: Pre-registration is required. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
