The NFL referees have been one of the biggest stories of the 2022 season, and that only increased in the playoffs. With the officiating under fire, Roger Goodell and the NFL decided to assign the ref with the most penalty calls the last two seasons, Carl Cheffers, to Super Bowl 57. And after calling a relatively controversy-free contest, Cheffers and his team became the story of the game. A late, soft penalty call gifted the game to the Kansas City Chiefs over the Philadelphia Eagles and sent “rigged” rocketing up the Twitter trending rankings.

Here are a couple of articles that I had lined up for the open thread. I’m too disgusted to finish it.
Regarding the game – the NFL may not be rigged, after that shitty call last night I have a lot more understanding of people think it is.
A Little History of American Style Football
Advancing a ball while being opposed by a team working to advance that ball in the opposite direction goes back a long way. According to legend, the first time this took place Britain was after the defeat of a Danish Prince. After decapitating the Prince, they decided to kick around his head. A stylized version […]
Confederacy-Loving Delaware Man Gets Three Years in Union Prison
Kevin Seefried, the Laurel drywall hanger who paraded a huge Confederate battle flag through the Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection and menaced a Capitol cop with it, was handed a three-year prison sentence yesterday by a Trump-appointed federal judge. His lawyers had asked for a 12-month sentence, and argued that Seefried, 53, lacked “even […]
Chris Coons is Simply Lying About Not Knowing About QAnon
Ed Note: This post was first published on Mar 24, 2022 at 08:04. It is now getting some hits so I’m moving it up to see what’s up.
Consultants have been telling Republican members of Congress to say that they don’t know what QAnon is when asked about it, and its influence on the party. Chris Coons is also adopting that strategy.

Question: Are you concerned Republicans may be trying to play to the Q-anon base?
Sen. Chris Coons: “I wouldn’t understand what an appeal to the Q-anon base looks like. So if that’s what’s going on, I’m missing it. Because frankly, that’s not a frame that resonates with me.”
This is derived from the GOP’s successful strategy of denying that they follow the news when asked about something Trump said.
Song of the Day 2/8: Honey Cone, “One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show”
I didn’t watch Biden’s SOTU speech, but I saw plenty of still pictures of Marjorie Taylor Greene. They didn’t remind me of a clown — more like one of those Japanese macaques popularly known as snow monkeys. Maybe it was just the effect of the fur collar — as Jesus sorta said, you can’t hide […]
Biden delivered a good speech – Republicans acted like a bunch of clowns, as expected
I didn’t watch the speech, but reviews are good. Biden was his usual steady self, but also lively and energetic. He was up for a taking on the dumbfucks in the GOP head-on. Bravo. They aren’t accustomed to that.
Not that it matters. U.S politics hasn’t been about what Democrats do or say for a while now. Steadily and seriously, Biden and Obama both rescued the country from the disastrous terms of erratic Republican clowns. But you wont hear anything about it in the news. Short memories.
No, our politics is all about the clown show. The media LOVES the excitement of the clown show. They love asking Democrats to respond to the clown show. And so Democrats always appear to be reacting, rarely acting. And yet, the clown show is exactly why Democrats keep wining and Republicans keep losing.
There are still Americans that want our politics to be steady, serious and sober. Most Americans take one look at this clown show, and say “I’ll take whatever the <I>’not this clown show'</I> option is please.”
Only Chris Coons keeps trying to pretend that the Republicans are not a clown show. Who can say why? I think he gets off on it.

A-hole on A-hole violence
Where is the a-hole community leadership? Why aren’t they condemning this? Trump is smearing DeSantis as a groomer The very stable geniuses at Truth Social are upset DeSantis intends to run against Trump in the 2024 presidential election. So they are resorting to calling him a “groomer,” which is MAGA-speak for “people I don’t like.” […]

Atrios Nails It
Atrios wrote this as part of his explanation of why the Very Sensible Centrists are full of shit when they talk about trans kids, but it applies whenever they play their “the right has a point” game.
