Song Of The Day: Nov. 6, 2017
Not all great soul singers became famous. Which doesn’t minimize their greatness. James Carr was a great soul singer. But he suffered from a bipolar disorder that led to him being terrified of performing and touring. This great song was written by the ace team of Dan Penn and Chips Moman:
Song Of The Day: November 5, 2017
This song should be sung in front of the White House every day that Trump occupies it: Curtis Mayfield is on my Musical Mount Rushmore. This is one of the reasons why. This song gets me every time.
Song Of The Day: Nov. 4, 2017
We’re finishing out the week with a Curtis Mayfield trilogy. In this second installment, Curtis and the Impressions exhort their followers to Keep On Pushing. Written in 1964, one of his earliest contributions to the civil rights era. There would be more:
Song Of The Day: Nov. 3, 2017
My musical sweet spot is indeed the Sweet Soul Music of the 1960’s and early ’70’s. The soundtrack to my life. To this day, I never tire of hearing those great songs. Oh, and singing them. While Curtis Mayfield would go on to create some of the most important music of the Civil Rights era, […]
Bulo’s Fave Tunes: October, 2017
Just when I thought the year was winding down, just when I’d begun to shift my attention to my Best Of The Year list, along comes a month filled with great music, incredible diversity. I’ve got my favorites, let me know what yours are: I’m not one to pat myself on the back (he […]
Song Of The Day: Nov. 1, 2017
I told you this was gonna be free-association. When Paul mentioned Pink Floyd’s ‘Grantchester Meadows’ yesterday, I immediately thought of one of my fave British folk rock songs of all time. Although different profound meetings have been ascribed to the song’s lyrics, writer Richard Thompson said in an interview with Mojo magazine, “”The hardest thing about being […]
Song Of The Day: Oct. 31, 2017
So, I’m listening to the vaguely ominous jamming, perhaps while under the influence of Jamaican herb, barely paying attention, when…well, you either know, or don’t know, what comes next. A GREAT Halloween song. Meant to be enjoyed in the spirit that it was created:
Song Of The Day: Oct. 30, 2017
When Walter Becker died, I sampled a lot of his and Donald Fagen’s solo stuff and, of course, listened to a lot of Steely Dan. While this song was on a Greatest Hits collection, (a) it wasn’t a hit; (b) never made it onto an album (written when the Dan were preparing The Royal Scam […]
Song Of The Day: Oct. 29, 2017
A great lost (IMHO) Paul Simon classic. From a not-well-received album, Hearts And Bones, released in 1983. Talia Schlanger played it on the World Cafe a couple days ago, first time I’ve heard it. It blew me away:
Song Of The Day: Oct. 28, 2017
A new free-association musical treat brought to you daily. I first saw Buckwheat Zydeco do this at a festival the day before I hopped a plane to a conference in the Big Easy. Here’s the original, presented for obvious reasons:
Jazz Master Brings Creole Soul To Arden Gild Hall
No, I’m not the producer, but this Etienne Charles is damn impressive. The Guggenheim Fellow brings his ‘Creole Soul’ project to the Arden Gild Hall this Friday night at 8 p.m. Check him out. First, here’s a piece from his ‘Creole Soul’ project: And here’s a live taste: Hey, if you like, here’s where […]
Happy 100th To Thelonious Sphere Monk!
He’s on my musical Mount Rushmore. Perhaps Donald Fagen put it best: “The ET in my bedroom was my Thelonious Monk records.” There was no one like him. Not to mention, he had the greatest name of all time. Check out some highlights from a 1959 Newport Jazz Festival gig: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/10/a-hundred-years-of-thelonious-monk-listen-to-this.html
‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: September, 2017
Was starting to get a little concerned, but the last week of the month saved me. As always, some real great stuff: http://www.npr.org/2017/08/10/542441711/songs-we-love-chain-and-the-gang-rome-wasn-t-burned-in-a-day (Do NOT pass this one by. It rocks!) One of my faves. A great road-tested band, and a great new album. Catch her live: You’re welcome.
