2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees
And now for something completely different!
The powers that be released their list of nominees to the Hall of Fame for 2017. So that is time for us to get our music snobbery on and dissect this (mostly uninspiring) list. The nominees:
‘Bulo Brings Musicians’ Musicians to Arden Gild Hall on Sat., Nov. 5
You can leave the earplugs at home for this show as you will want to hear every tasty musical morsel. I’m very proud of this bill, which features headliner Ben Sollee, cellist/singer/songwriter/storyteller/political activist and musical collaborator. I’ve been wanting to bring Ben back to the Hall for six years now, and I’m thrilled we finally got him. He will perform with his long-time percussionist, Jordon Ellis, and will introduce new songs from his first full-length album in four years. Here’s a tiny bit of what you can expect:
Our National Dilbert Problem
As many of you know Scott Adams, the artist behind Dilbert, has had a Trump problem. For such a seemingly articulate person, Adams has caused many problems with his inarticulate defenses of Donald Trump.
The Walking Dead Tonight!
Yeah, you either love it or hate it. I love it – a show I started watching three years ago when I was looking for something to do with my 19 year old son in the dead of winter. Anyway… I’m hooked. Season 7 starts tonight. It airs at the same time as Westworld (HBO’s […]
Something I Learned Today: Friday, Oct. 14
Need advice on your next wine purchase? Today I learned that, in the future, electronic tongues may well help guide you: The ‘tongue’ is made of gold, platinum and carbon electrodes, and measures the electro-chemical signals of sugars, phenolics and other compounds present in wine, according to its designers. They added that it might even […]
Something I Learned Today: Oct. 4, 2016
This may or may not work. It dawned on me that I come across new stuff all the time that I want to share with people. Not necessarily political stuff, but new discoveries that (I think) deserve greater attention.
So this is the start (and perhaps the end) of an infrequent series called “Something I Learned Today”.
‘Bulo Brings the Blues to Arden!
This may be the best blues bill I’ve ever booked.
Joe Louis Walker brings his band to the Arden Gild Hall on Thursday, October 13 at 8 pm. The so-called opener, Bob Malone, is also not to be missed.
JLW is the reigning Blues Music Awards Male Contemporary Blues Performer of the Year and is an inductee into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame. A true triple threat–axeman, singer, and songwriter. Here is a tiny taste of what you can expect:
R. I. P. Stanley ‘Buckwheat Zydeco’ Dural
One of America’s greatest musical ambassadors has died. Stanley Dural, who helped propel zydeco into the public consciousness, has passed at the age of 68. He once told me that his goal was to pass this great Creole music (do not call it ‘Cajun’) down from generation to generation. And, with his family-friendly shows, he, along with his band known collectively as Buckwheat Zydeco, accomplished just that.
‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: August, 2016
Frank Ocean’s adventurous ‘NIKEs’ would have appeared here, but…Apple Music. ‘Nuff said. You say you like the Beach Boys? Here’s some great non-Beach Boys Beach Boys: Love this lounge lizard persona: Let’s go out the way we came–an end of summer elegy by the Next Best Thing to the Beach Boys–and we don’t even have […]
‘Bulo To Appear On WHYY-TV
Yes, I’m trying a new medium. Or, to be accurate, they’re trying me. I sure know how to secure non-monetized gigs. Even went out and bought two shirts and two ties and, for the first time ever, had my shirts TAILORED. In order, of course, to highlight my 42-inch biceps. Sorry, ladies, I’m taken.
We taped a segment on the Lieutenant Governor’s race. About seven minutes long, although who knows how much usable tape they’ll be able to salvage. It will first appear this Friday at 5:30 p.m. on WHYY TV, and will then also be shown over the weekend. In addition, you will be able to find it at whyy.org. once it airs. And who knows, maybe we’ll even post it here.
Gotta say it was a fun segment. They took away my cheat sheet so I had to do it all from memory, but I generally survived and actually enjoyed it. Even threw in a few laugh lines. They can take me off the radio, but they can’t take the radio out of me.
BTW, no makeup. You can’t improve on perfection.
What It Means
Some may say Drive-By Truckers are the best Southern rock’n roll band since Lynyrd Skynyrd, but that is an incredible disservice to the Truckers, since they are probably the most important American rock’n roll band over the last 15 years. They are coming out with a new album in September called American Band. Their second single is What It Means, an examination of US society today.
‘Bulo’s Fave Tunes: July 2016
Only six songs, with a Very Special Bonus Track (actually two bonus tracks, if you pay attention), this month. Quality over quantity.
