QOTD — Have You Seen Your Congressional Delegation Weigh In on the Sequester?
Seriously — the past week (especially this weekend) has send lots of legislators to the airwaves to weigh in on the sequester. Most of the Democrats are out making the case for their plan to replace the sequester. The GOP either: 1) aren’t talking; 2) blaming Obama or 3) saying the sequester is no big deal. After a quick Google search and look at each of their websites, none of them has addressed the looming sequester at all.
What We Have Here Is A Failure of Deficit Hawkery
Did anyone notice this article on Friday — where Senator Carper is committing to working for continued funding of the deepening dredge of the Delaware while the US Government is getting ready (prioritizing projects) for the cutbacks required by the sequester. And can I remind you that Senator Carper voted FOR said sequester?
Carper’s Gone Rogue. Make That Rogue-er.
Poor despairing Tom Carper. Forced to sit in his Senate Democratic Caucus and see his dreams of ‘entitlement reform’, aka gut the New Deal and the Great Society, go down the drain. From today’s unbelievable (but true) News-Journal piece:
Carper said he “sat there in despair” during meetings with fellow Democrats to discuss the deal brokered by Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Carper had been telling colleagues for months this was their chance to do something meaningful about tax and entitlement reforms. The deal ultimately passed by Congress does neither, he said.
Don’t believe that Carper is going after Social Security? Read this illogic in all its Carperesque rationalization, then read what Sen. Bernie Sanders has to say about it:
Giving Thanks for Delaware’s Politicans
People are thankful for many different things by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. Some are thankful for their health. Others are happy they have close friends and a loving family. I’m thankful for politicians.
Delaware Political Weekly: Oct. 13-19, 2012
The political world in western Sussex returns to normal. While there will likely be some confusion on the R side, Eric Bodenweiser’s full withdrawal from the 19th Senate District race virtually guarantees that Brian Pettyjohn will keep this crimson red senate seat in the R column come November. Bodenweiser’s name will not appear on the ballot. While voters indeed will have to write in Pettyjohn’s name, the DOE will make it as easy as possible for people to do so, and I don’t think it will be close. Don’t blame Jane Hovington. She stepped up and took one for the team, whatever that team might be in western Sussex. Which begs this thought: You’ve got a moribund Democratic Party in western Sussex. You’ve got a growing Latino and minority population base that has next to no voice in the official party structure there. A party structure that is almost gone. I see a great opportunity to build a new and more inclusive Democratic Party in western Sussex. With grassroots leadership from these growing populations. It’s not as if there’s gonna be a revival of the good ol’ boys Democrats there. There’s a political vacuum. Fill it, amigos.
El Somnambulo Predicts ‘Em All For You*. Part 1…
*Well, not all as in ALL. Just every primary where I think I know enough to make a prediction. Some of which, invariably, will be wrong.
National Races:
U. S. Senate D’s: Tom Carper routs Keith Spanarelli. Over/under on Spanarelli: 12%.
U. S. House R’s: Tom Kovach routs Rose Izzo. Over/under on Rizzo: 11%.
Come inside for more, including, as the photo suggests, my prediction on the epic 11th SD race.
Tough Campaign Messaging
Am looking for alot of opinions from DL readers on this one. The sticker shown below is from the Alex Pires campaign and was on the Sunday NJ as delivered (I think delivered) to one of our favorite commenters yesterday. Since this individual knows that some of us do not see the dead tree version of the paper, this was sent in to share. I’m not sure if this was on all of the papers statewide, but take a look and tell us if you think this is effective or not:
Kevin Wade and Jeff Cragg
This morning, Delaware businessman Jeff Cragg officially filed his candidacy for Governor. Wait, we’re cutting in with a breaking report…
BOOM: Castle Becomes a Lobbyist
After the mandatory layoff, a year, Mike Castle has filed to become a lobbyist So he moves from being Boehner’s bitch to being someone else’s bitch.
Delaware Liberal Tracking Poll Results: Tom Carper
Tom Carper has some friends in the party after all. Indeed, it is heartening to know that the party staff and his campaign staff read DL. Thanks for the traffic, guys! Anyway, Senator Carper has a 61% approval rating and a 36% disapproval rating.
The Delaware Liberal Tracking Poll
You may have noticed in the center column of the site, we have a poll question regarding the job performance of Governor Markell. Currently, the Governor has a 69% approval rating (27% approve, 42% strongly approve), and a 22% disapproval rating (17% disapprove, 5% strongly). And 9% of you either don’t care, don’t know or are “meh” when it comes to the Governor.
Now, an internet poll is in no way accurate (although, real polls of the Governor’s job performance have similar findings, with approval in the 60’s). We are not dealing with a random sample here. And the sample size is way too small (64 people at last count). Still, I thought it would be fun to have a new tracking poll feature each day that polls the politically motivated and passionate in Delaware. Each day of the week we will poll on a different office holder or candidate.
The Day the Internet Went Black
DD gave us a heads up yesterday that Wikipedia was going black today. If you’ve been spinning around the Internet today, it is pretty dazzling to see the sites that have joined them:
Tea Leaf Alert: Christine O’Donnell
The tea leaves think that Christine O’Donnell isn’t running for Senate.
