Mike Castle Takes Credit For Stimulus Project He Voted Against

Crack reporting by WDEL’s Jim Hilgen leaves out the fact that Mike Castle voted against funding the AMTRACK stimulus project that he is so eager to take credit for.

Stimulus money at work in Delaware
By Jim Hilgen

State and federal officials from Delaware will celebrate the first project completed with federal stimulus funds.

An Amtrak train car, refurbished using stimulus money at the Amtrak shop in Bear will be unveiled on Monday.

Governor Jack Markell will be joined by Senator Tom Carper and Congressman Mike Castle in putting the rail car into service.

As a result of nearly 60 million dollars in federal stimulus funds, Amtrak’s Bear facility has added more than 50 new employees to rehab 60 passenger rail cars between now and February 2011.

Good Deed of the Day

Al Mascitti over at WDEL is fundraising for local charities this AM — call him at 302-478-9335 to pledge what you can this morning.

It is important that this is for local charities — these are the organizations that are supporting your neighbors who are being hit hard by this horrible economy.

WDEL Lt. Governor Debate 28 October at 6

Allan Loudell is moderating a debate between Matt Denn and Charlie Copeland at WDEL on Tuesday 28 October starting at 6PM. According to Allan’s blog, this debate will go one or one and a half hours depending upon the Phillies.

Allan is asking for questions to be asked of these candidates — if you have any, hop over to Allan’s blog and follow the directions to submit them directly to him.

Why Does Rick Jensen Hate Democracy ?

Somehting has been bothering me about Rick Jensen’s unhinged wingnuttery and Dave Neiwert at Orcinus nails it.

Sometimes you have to wonder what Republicans have against democracy.

Because that’s what this whole “voter fraud” foofara is about. John McCain and Sarah Palin and Lou Dobbs and the rest of the right-wing torch brigade that have been after ACORN and the Ohio Secretary of State aren’t concerned about protecting people’s right to vote — and in fact, their efforts largely go toward directly stripping citizens of their legitimate voting rights.

Or more precisely, this is all about building a post-election narrative aimed at delegitimizing a Barack Obama presidency by claiming he won fraudulently. It’s not just a handy excuse for the ass-kicking they deserve — it’s a whole right-wing conspiracy-theory cottage industry in the making that will nurture their paranoia and rage for years down the road.

Jensen and his ilk really hate America. It is sick really.

UPDATED: Open Letter To Allan Loudell

UPDATE: Allan responded to my assholery and I don’t know how to respond to the response because he is such a fricking decent human being. (Damn you Loudell!)

It occurs to me that when I call out media types like Allan I don’t think that I’m calling out actual humans but a corrupt system. And is a hell of a lot easier to be an a-hole to a a corrupt system than it is to be a-hole to a fellow human. This insight will influence my behavoir for a few days until I forget about it again.

…………………………………………
Dear Allan,

I heard you teasing the “News at Noon” this morning on my drive to work and I’d be curious to know your motivations for pumping up the non-story about how the GOP is trying to get some mileage out of a cropped Joe Biden quote – after which you flatly state that a real news story about Sarah Palin is a “tempest in a teapot.”

Are you trying to appeal to Rick Jensen’s moronic listenership? Do you have orders from Delmarva Broadcasting to help promote GOP spin?

As an occasional WDEL listener and advertiser, I am eager to know what factors shape your editorial decisions. Since this morning’s tease dealt with both the Republican and Democratic candidates for Vice President it provides a clear “apples to apples” view of WDEL’s editorial slant and serves as clear evidence that WDEL has a strong conservative bias. Any insight you might have into how that bias works its way into your “news” reporting would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Jason

Questions for WDEL Debate NCCo Executive Candidates

NOTE: I’m bumping this up in hopes that more of you will see it and want to add a question.
************************
As Allan Loudell noted here, the debate between the two Democratic candidates for NCCo Executive Chris Coons and Tom Gordon is set for this Friday. Details of the debate:
When: Aug. 22, 8 a.m.
Where: Ruby R. Vale Moot Courtroom, Widener Univ. Law School, Wilmington.

This one is open to the public, so get there early to get a good seat.

Allan will be one of 3 reporters asking questions, but he has asked us again for suggestions on the questions we’d like to see answered. If you’ve been listening to the debates Allan has hosted so far, he has been selecting some questions from those submitted by those writing and commenting here and he makes sure that the candidates answer those questions. So weigh in! What questions would you want these two candidates answer?

Ask Questions of the Candidates for Wilmington City Council President

The next in Allan Loudell’s series of candidate debates is with the Democratic candidates for Wilmington City Council President: Norman Griffiths and Theo Gregory.

The debate is on WDEL on Monday, 18 August 2008 from 6 to 7PM. For those of you outside of the area, the programs are streamed here.

Allan has put out another call for questions that you would like to hear asked of the candidates so you can better understand their policy positions. In the previous debates, Allan has used some questions from us, so this is your chance to hear questions that might mean something to you asked (and Allan doesn’t let them run away from the questions, either).

So post your questions below, and be sure to listen on Monday!

Questions for the Candidates for Insurance Commissioner

Last night, Allan Loudell hosted the debate between the Dem primary candidates for the replacement of Mike Castle and tonite he hosts a debate between the candidates for Insurance Commissioner. Allan has asked for input on questions you especially want answered from these candidates.

Allan used questions submitted by contributors and commenters to this blog last evening, and so you really have a chance at getting your question put to the candidates by someone who will keep those candidate on point.

So post your questions for the Insurance Commissioner candidates here! The debate this evening starts on WDEL at 6PM.

Carney v. Loudell?

A little birdie shot me a note about a post that Allan Loudell has up on his blog.  He is basically begging for an interview with Carney about the eminent domain bill.  Could it be that I can get 15 minutes with Carney about the bill during a recess on the last day of the session and the most influential reporter in Delaware can’t get a call back?  Something is amiss…
