Another Overreaching Executive Order

Filed in Uncategorized by on July 19, 2007

I just recently saw the new Harry Potter movie. One if the themes of that book and movie is the corruption of absolute power. A wicked woman was given full authority to make up whatever stupid rule that she deemed necessary for success, no matter the consequences.

Our moron-in-chief has done some decidin’. He has issued an executive order that give the Treasury the ability to seize property, secretly, of people who:

undermin[e] efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.

You can read the whole thing here, but it seems to me that Congress would have to make a law, and the SCOTUS would have to determine if it passes muster on the 5th Amendment. I must be missing something.

I think I speak for both conservatives and liberals when I say:

    WTF?

C’mon conservatives… are you really gonna stay silent when Bush proposes that the Secretary of Treasury can confiscate property of US Citizens without so much waving “Hello” to a judge?

Let’s hear the defense of this decree.

    and one more thing…

Just wait until President Hillary issues an executive order determining that Halliburton and Blackwater have been found to:

undermin[e] efforts to promote economic reconstruction and political reform in Iraq or to provide humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people.

    Obey and be happy.

Well, although my intention is certainly not to undermine any sort of humanitarian effort of any kind to Iraq or any such place, this law is over reaching executive power which is illegal, which is an impeachable offense.
    Watch it George!

  5. Read Scott says:

However, I believe if this passes the least of our problems will be George Bush, the fact that our democracy will be undermined scares me more.

Go ahead. Mark this day on the calendar. But I would have to agree that this is a bad decision. I understand the intent, similar to freezing the assets of terrorists, but it does way over step the bounds of the Constitution. I think you will find MANY conservatives that will step up and saw it is a bad decision. Just as we did with the insane amnesty bill. When we feel he is wrong, we say so.
