When I read this in the NJ…

KUWAIT CITY — The flashy Laila Tower office building in this wealthy oil capital is a world away from the mean streets of Baghdad. But the U.S. government says they are linked by a web of fraud and bribery that stole millions of dollars provided by American taxpayers to support U.S. combat troops in Iraq.

…and I read this in the comment section of Delawareliberal…

After I left you guys I had to laugh to myself when I ran into Carper and Castle walking around together. Ahhh, the Delaware Way.

I can’t help feeling that the items are related in some way. Can it be that we expect so little of our reps in Congress that they can do anything (or nothing) ? And cruise on and on.

There is no grand conspiracy; it is simply that we no longer have any objective perfomance criteria for these guys. They are elected therefore they are re-elected… and on and on.

Del State: Not Ready For The Bigs

They got stomped. All my hopes for a great game were dashed in the first few minutes. BUT…

I did get to hang with some Delawareliberal peeps like everyone’s favorite Republican Tyler P. Nixon. Meeting commenter and future DL contributor Dorian Gray was cool. (BTW – prior to meeting Dorian Gray I thought that having a flask of bourbon was a silly affectation. Was I ever wrong. That sip of Knob Creek hit the spot. Thanks DG. Like I needed another vice. )

War Trivia

Q: Does anyone know the name of our operation in Afghanistan?

LONDON (Reuters) – The conflict in Afghanistan has reached “crisis proportions,” with the resurgent Taliban present in more than half the country and closing in on Kabul, a report said on Wednesday.

A: Time is up. I didn’t think you would remember it.

It was/is called Operation Enduring Freedom but a better name would be “Operation Half-Assed Screw Up.”

Branson: Vegas on Lithium

Three days in Branson is just enough. I have worried about what I was going to write for the past few days. It would be a lie to say that I loved the visit, but I cannot say that I hated it, either. There is certainly a good deal of stuff to do there, but it didn’t meet the expectations that others had built it up to.

Fusion Wrap Up – (for those of us who have had our fill of turkey)

I just could not get into watching or commenting on that IPOD train wreck. In these types of situations – issues weigh more than personalities so they tend sink to the bottom and everyone comments on the oily film on the surface.

Anyway – through the entire brew ha ha the issue that sank was “Fusion.”

anoni at FSP sums it up in my view:

I realize “fusion” is the darling of the political hobbyists…

but I still can figure out the rational (or benefit) for a candidate to run a fusion campaign with IPOD.

What does IPOD stand for besides being ANTI Republican and Democrat? Nothing.

some cross endorsements make sense:

Dem/Green
Rep/Libertarian

But even those are unlikely to affect Election Day outcomes.

I agree with the first point. IPOD style fusion doesn’t make a heck of a lot of sense. As for the second…

First of all don’t limit possible fusion combinations to what you think of as affinity groups. A Dem/Libertarian or a Rep/Green could have a real impact.

The classic “fusion” candidate along these lines was Rudy Guliani when he ran for Mayor of NYC as a Republican AND a Liberal Party candidate. He was offering something to each group and his message resonated with both groups. Capital “L” liberals did not like the cronyism and the built in malaise of the city’s Democratic party and he was clearly Republican enough to suit NYC’s cliff dwellers.

That’s when fusion can make a difference.

Happy Thanksgiving

From all of us at Delawareliberal, have a safe and happy holiday and don’t blow your knee out playing touch football. Remember, it’s only a game.

As for me, in addition to all of my bourgeoisie comforts like my family, I’m thankful that Al Gore invented the internets so that we can meet here from time to time. Cheers!

U of D v DSU it is ABOUT time.

JL Miller does a good job in this story pointing to the fact that this IS a significant step. It is historic, fun, interesting and over due. But not very over due…

Wha….? Jason, you big liberal, what do you mean.

Delaware State would have been demolished even five years ago. It would not have even been a game. it would have been a travesty.

But today however (…or rather Friday) we are going to see a real game. The time is right. DSU needs to be added to Delaware’s schedule and the school can finally stop being treated like a third class citizen.

Listen and Be Happy (A musical stream of stream of consciousness post)

Ellie McKay (pronounced MaKai)

I heard her on “fresh air” on my drive home today. She was just so…I don’t know…loveable? I want to say cute but she has a steel infrastructure.

The Style Council

Something about the way McKay is underated reminds me of the Style Council. (Don’t be alarmed by Paul Weller’s teeth in this clip. He is English.)

The Housemartins

The Style Council never made it as big as the Housemartins over here, since the Housemartins had one big legitimate hit. This song is not it. This is the one that continues to make sense to me in my 40’s. (BTW – I think that is Paul Weller doing the backgound (call and response) vocals.)

Elvis Costello

The Housemartins CD I played over and over alternating it with Elvis Costello’s “My Aim is True.” I bought that album having heard zero songs from it. The cover art was that good. Anyway, this song is not from that album but came a little later around the Falklands war.

The Dixie Chicks

What is it about Elvis that reminds me of the Dixie Chicks? I think that maybe it is the integrity.

Billy Bragg

The first version of this list ended with Elton John, but that just did not fit. I played the shit out of Billy Bragg’s “Worker’s Playtime” for years so he gets the last ticket.

Brandy”wine” tasting club hits the Big Time baby!

Sorry you all missed it!  But there is still time to catch the next one.  February is a beer tasting and we will be doing a Scotch tasting sometime in the spring!

People uncork their enthusiasm for wine at new tasting club

To emphasize that point, the club will host tastings where each bottle of wine is concealed in a paper bag until each person has sampled it. People are often surprised that they like cheaper wines better

If you are a sharp enough reader, my hotness has been exposed!  but none of you are so I’m safe

UPDATED: Veeeeeeeeery Interesting…….(not)

Not interesting after all it seems.
John Kowalko said that he looked forward to sitting next to Tom Noyes in Leg Hall and some started to wonder if that meant Tom was going to run to be the biggest ass-kicking wonk in Dover.

Turns out Tom is represented by Gerald Brady, who he regards as a friend.

To all of this I say – Tom, there are some great real estate deals to be had in Middletown.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Did anyone else here Tom Noyes followed by John Kowalko around 5:45 on WDEL?

Tom was, of course, totally all over the Blue Wind/Delmarva story, but I think I heard John Kowalko say something very interesting indeed.

Military says GRRRRRR F-you, Give me my money back

See this is what happens when you sign up for money and not for the love of your country.

Apparently, thousands of wounded soldiers who served in Iraq are being asked to return part of their enlistment bonuses — because their injuries prevented them from completing their tours. From Pittsburgh’s KDKA:

Fox was seriously injured when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle. He was knocked unconscious. His back was injured and lost all vision in his right eye.

A few months later Fox was sent home. His injuries prohibited him from fulfilling three months of his commitment. A few days ago, he received a letter from the military demanding nearly $3,000 of his signing bonus back.

“I tried to do my best and serve my country. I was unfortunately hurt in the process. Now they’re telling me they want their money back,” he explained.

Happy Veterans Day

Anti “Black Friday” the term and the day.

Today I’m kicking off a campaign to replace the phrase “black Friday” with the phrase “the day after Thanksgiving.”

Who is with me?

You don’t have to get all up in anybody’s grill.  Simply say, “I prefer using the term ‘the day after Thanksgiving’ .”
