Obama spokesperson Bill Burton just confirmed to me that the campaign has set up a joint fundraising committee with the Democratic National Committee, a development that was first reported today by Mark Halperin.
The move is unusual in the sense that it’s typically the sort of thing that’s done once there is a nominee.
Copeland is giving up his senate seat to run against Denn. I didn’t see this coming.
Delaware Senate Minority Leader Charlie Copeland filed to run for Lieutenant Governor of Delaware today.
“During my six years in the Senate, I have too often seen this administration ignore serious problems,” said Copeland. “The transportation budget, prisoners’ health care, the psychiatric facility, and now the state budget –this administration ignored all of these problems until they had spiraled out of control.”
From my reading of the press release they’ve talked Bill Lee into being a stalking horse candidate at the top of the ticket to give Copeland some cover.
Charlie Copeland stated, “When I spoke to Bill Lee to encourage him to run for Governor, he asked me if I would run with him. Bill shares my dedication to our state and my concern for its future. I decided that to make a difference I had to give up my seat in the Senate and run for higher office, where I can better push for the real reform I’ve tried to create for six years. I look forward to running as a team with Judge Bill Lee if he enters the race for governor. However, I am definitely in this race for Lieutenant Governor of Delaware.”
This explains why Copeland had been working with McDowell to oppose wind power. He’ll be the Delmarva Power guy in the race.
Expect this news to dominate everything for a while. Many tiles on the game board have just shifted dramatically.

The finances of many states have deteriorated so badly that they appear to be in a recession, regardless of whether that’s true for the nation as a whole, a survey of all 50 state fiscal directors concludes. (snip)
The situation looks even worse for the fiscal year that begins July 1 in most states.
The situation is grim in Delaware, with a $69 million gap this year, and bleak in California, with a projected $16 billion budget shortfall over the next two years, the report said. Florida does not expect a rapid turnaround in revenue because of the prolonged real estate slump there.

So there I was just hanging out with my friends. You know regular guys. We are all church goers too. Sure one of us is Jewish, but that’s a long story. So there we are like, all having beer, talking about guns and discussing what are preacher had talked about on church. Just regular guys. Hanging out.
Then BAM, LG man…what else is there to say. So that’s just one story ladies. I can throw out more. But I think a picture is worth a thousand words. Sorry, LG, but this is the right thing to do. I hate for it to come to this LG. It’s for the best of Dellib though. It really is. These other idiots at FSP, Comic loving Queens, or just plain batty rabid wingnuts will do or say anything to knock you down. Like I have said. It’s all to protect you.
Don’t make me tell them about your wife. It’s not fair to bring her into this. She’s to educated to have to deal with the scum of the earth like my wife and I can. She needs to stay in her 10 bedroom home and make sure the drapes match the carpet. Important things. I don’t need to tell you that because she makes way more than you that could become a liability for you. We know she has a jealous streak worse than a sea otter. I’m not saying she is a sea otter, but they could. I care about her too much to let that happen. My wife and I, we have an understanding. I really think that if you look deep down you will see that you aren’t ready or qualified for this job. I think you will see that you have had a pretty easy road so far. I have struggled. As an Italian American I have been there. I served my country. I provided you that blanket of security for 4 years. I was on food stamps, WIC and have even had to pay child support. I have made it. I have broken through cielings. Have you?
I fear for you LG. But I fear more for this title and what will happen to it if it get’s in your hands. I think it’s cute what you have done up to now. But, lets stop this, join forces. Me, I shop at Super Fresh when needed I don’t mind the place. The prices are decent and I think they have good meat prices. But, my Utopia is Giant on RT202. I can’t get out of that place in less than a half hour no matter how hard I try.
Florida provides a very interesting case study for us. They were eliminated from being involved in nominating the Democratic Presidential candidate. So to a degree they are an unvarnished example of Hillary’s starting point.
None of the candidates campaigned there (except for ads that were run there as a result of some national advertising package). As such, it is a good example of what Hillary started with in the bank. One of the memes that Hillary and Rush and a whole host of people with a vested interest have trotted out, is that Obama spent huge sums of money and still couldn’t put Clinton out of the race.
In Florida, Hillary pulled 49.7%, while Obama had 33%. So that is a reasonable starting point for our discussion. Without spending a dollar, Hillary had a 17 point lead. This is likely because she is one of the most recognized women in the country. As a result, Obama has had to make up ground at every stop.
I don’t know how to value that sort of name recognition, but we can make some educated guesses. In Ohio, Obama had to spend $4.4M (Clinton $2.3M). That extra 2.1 million got him 6 points (Clinton dropped 4 points) and Hillary ended up with a net gain of 7 delegates (141 at stake).
One could make the argument that this is because his message isn’t catching on or whatever, but that is ignoring the assets that Hillary began with. Obama may have spent more, but Hillary already had millions of dollars worth of name recognition and a proxy message (guess who her husband is…). I would argue that Hillary had $10M worth of assets in Ohio before she set foot in the state.
To not acknowledge this fact is ignorance or perhaps it is understandable. Many of Hillary’s new supporters have been itching at another shot at disparaging the Clinton Presidency. These are people that compared Chelsea to a family dog and accused Hillary of being a lesbian, a murderer and a communist. So the next time you hear a right-wing pundit say that Hillary is the Democrats only choice, consider the source.
