Pay attention. This is what we don’t want to do, or… All Hands on Deck

Filed in National by on July 7, 2008

The Republican Party is in trouble. I know this because I recognize the signs. They are acting like… well… Democrats.

Conservative activists are preparing to do battle with allies of Sen. John McCain in advance of September’s Republican National Convention, hoping to prevent his views on global warming, immigration, stem cell research and campaign finance from becoming enshrined in the party’s official declaration of principles.

Sound familiar?

The Republican Party has splintered, but that doesn’t necessarily equate with a November loss. Victory or defeat lies in our hands. I’ve never demanded purity politics from a politician – and Obama is, and always was, a politician. A smart politician. How smart are we? Smart enough to pick our battles?

For example, I do not want Senator Obama engaging in debates on guns or abortions. What I want is President Obama appointing Supreme Court Judges. I do not want Senator Obama filibustering FISA – providing endless sound bites for the MSM and the Republicans. I want President Obama to restore the Constitution.

See the difference?

  1. Agreed. Just turn back the clock 8 years ago and if
Nader doesn’t grab left of the Democratic party in a few states and we’d be in the second term of an Al Gore presidency

  2. Von Cracker says:

Too bad they lost their moral compass, Jesse Helms, over the weekend. Wonder which hater will take his place as Pop-Pop?

Personally, I hope the failed modern conservative movement, just like the Holy Roman Empire, continues to split and dies a horrible, certain death.

  3. Disbelief says:

Without Jesse and Pat Robertson, how will they know who to hate (whom?)

  4. pandora says:

They will hate Obama. Like I said… All hands on deck.

  5. Von Cracker says:

Luckly for them, Robertson is still telling the sheep for money who his god hates; it was Falwell who recently kicked it.

  6. Disbelief says:

Robertson hasn’t met Jebus yet? My bad.

If Jesus is really there, I’ll bet Robertson and Falwell and ilk are really going to be in for an unpleasant eternity.

  7. Rebecca says:

If the Supreme Court were to get a couple more wing-nuts on board it would not be a stretch for the Supreme Court to decide that Social Security, the Voting Rights Act, Medicare, etc., etc. are unconsitutional. You have only to look at the lack of logic or legal knowledge in some of their recent decisions to see where this court could go, and it’s way beyond Roe vs. Wade. Roberts, Thomas, Alito and Scalia only need one more idealogue to reign supreme and we’d all be back in 1880. This must not be allowed to happen.

Don’t let purity get in the way of progress.

    Onward!

  8. Truth Teller says:

Dem’s ought to stop listening to the talking heads like Keith ‘Matthews and Mike Todd and others and just be sure to vote in November

  9. Pandora says:

    Um… Chuck Todd.

  10. Dominique says:

Wow. I stopped listening to them a few months ago. Is it safe to assume they’re actually listening to Obama’s words now and questioning them?

BTW, I’ve always found Chuck Todd to be one of the few with an ounce of journalistic integrity and objectivity. What has he done to upset the Obama crowd?

I absolutely agree with this to the extent that it means that insistence on absolute fealty to hardcore ideology is not a smart way to win much.

But I do want candidates who are looking for my vote for anything to communicate to me their ideas and values as they relate to governing. To that end, I do want to see Senator Obama (and all of the other Senators for that matter) filibustering the FISA bill. The traditional media and the repubs will say what they say and we already know that they will do that even if they have to make it all up. I would like for the Senator to say that GWB broke the law on this wiretapping and conspiring to sweep this under the rug is just one more assault on the rights of Americans. I’ll remind you all that trusting one man to do the right thing (because lots of folks wanted to have a beer with him) is pretty much how we got into this hole in the first place. All of these candidates ought to be in the business of earning all of that trust right now — not just in asking for it because he or she is on your team.

  12. Truth Teller says:

I believe that the FISA bill is coming up again in the Senate for a vote to let the telecoms off the hook. I sure wish that our Senators would adhere to the Constitution, for if my memory serves me correctly. Article 1 Section 9 States No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto shall be passed.

So Hope that Biden ,Carper and the rest of the Dem’s will uphold the Constitution instead of letting the repuk’s scare them into voting for FISA because they are afraid of being painted soft on Terror.

“For example, I do not want Senator Obama engaging in debates on guns or abortions.”

Of course not. When he does that he makes John “flip flop” Kerry look like a straight talker.

  14. Al Mascitti says:

What’s the matter, Libertarian boy? Can’t find anyone to take your bait over there?

  15. Truth Teller says:

I just wish Obama would answer McCain on the Flip flop issue by saying I am now going to list McCain’s flip flops and stop me when I reach a subject he has not Flipped on. Then start listing them and the press will get the message after 3 hours and Obama is still listing them.

  16. mike w. says:

    “Libertarian boy”

You say that like it’s an insult. I quite like the freedoms I enjoy in this country (and let’s face it, the U.S. is pretty much the last bastion of freedom on the earth) I actually believe in the principles upon which this country was founded and will not gleefully hold out my hands to be shackled by Mr. “hope & change.”

  17. Al Mascitti says:

“let’s face it, the U.S. is pretty much the last bastion of freedom on the earth”

    Your jingoism is showing.

  18. mike w. says:

Are we not unique in the world in our fervent protection of the rights of the individual? Most other countries elevate “society” over those rights.
