These guys aren’t even subtle

Richard Perle is looking into an oil deal in Iraq.

Mr. Perle, one of a group of security experts who began pushing the case for toppling Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein about a decade ago, has been discussing a possible deal with officials of northern Iraq’s Kurdistan regional government, including its Washington envoy, according to these people and the documents.

Think Progress remembers that Perle “resigned from his position on the Defense Policy Board in an attempt to ‘defuse a controversy over charges he stood to profit from the war in Iraq.'”

Knock me over with a feather! You gotta love this sort of patriotism.

Dem Insurance Commissioner Primary

This is a tough one. One the one hand we have Gene Reed who has 25 years of experience and all the insidery connections that go along with that and his fundraising does not give me the impression that he’ll be as tough on insurance companies as Matt Denn has been.

On the other hand we have Karen Weldon Stewart who has the suspect resume of a perennial candidate in search of an office.

I wish I was more impressed.

Who are you backing? And who should I support?

Questions of Authenticity at the 41st RD Debate

Former Republican John Atkins and Democrat Barbara Lifflander met last night in a debate sponsored by the Delaware Manufactured Homeowners Association.   Besides Carney-Markell and Lee-Protack, this primary is one of the more interesting ones in the state.  As we all know, Mr. Atkins formerly represented this district as a Republican from 2003 until 2007.   But on one fateful evening in late October 2006, Mr. Atkins drove back from Secrets in Ocean City, Maryland intoxicated, was pulled over by the Maryland police, and he used his General Assembly credentials to escape getting thrown in jail.   The ethical consequences of that move, along with other sordid allegations of spousal abuse and the bribery of babysitters forced Mr. Atkins to resign in 2007 lest the House take formal action to remove him.

Barbara Lifflander was Mr. Atkin’s opposition in 2004 and 2006, and she ran in the special election to replace him in 2007 but lost to Republican Greg Hastings.  Now in 2008, Atkins wants his job back.   But, for some reason, he does not want to challenge Mr. Hastings in a primary.   Instead, he wants to deceive his constituents and register as a Democrat so that he can challenge Hastings in the general election.   Now, this is a deep mystery to me, because Atkins’ basic selling point on running to return to his old job is that he has deep contacts within the community and knows how to work Dover and the state government agencies so as to provide excellent constitutent services.   Now, that is Atkins’ only argument for his campaign.   But it is an argument that can help win in a Republican primary just as it can help him win a general election.    Nevertheless, Atkins has registered as Democrat, and is has filed as Democrat for this race.

America Has Become a Country That Rewards Cruelty and Stupidity

Just think of all the stupidty and anti-factual BS we have to contend with on this very blog. That willing stupidity and calavier cruelty originates in the human heart – but it is nurtured by our culture. Why? Because at some point someone figured out that there was money to be made by nursing the evil, narrow cruelty that lurks in all of us.  As a culture we can try to mitigate the darkness or promote it.   America has decided to promote it.  .

How else could you explain rich talk show hate-mongers like Michael Savage, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Laura Ingram?

Adkisson told Still that since “he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement that he would then target those that had voted them in to office.”

Adkisson told officers he left the house unlocked for them because “he expected to be killed during the assault.”

Inside the house, officers found “Liberalism is a Mental Health Disorder” by radio talk show host Michael Savage, “Let Freedom Ring” by talk show host Sean Hannity, and “The O’Reilly Factor,” by television talk show host Bill O’Reilly.

The shotgun-wielding suspect in Sunday’s mass shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church was motivated by a hatred of “the liberal movement,” and he planned to shoot until police shot him, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV said this morning.

Knox News Via Kos

Let’s be clear that Bill O’Reilly, Michael Savage, or Sean Hannity did not pull the trigger. But has Kos diarist fivefouranonymous points out, “These pundits have a consistently hateful message and a consistently loud megaphone that permeates our culture, so I imagine if nothing else, it encourages hate.. Hate perpetuates itself.”

Comment Rescue: If the congregation had been armed this never would have happened.

Al notes:

…the motive of the Tennessee church gunman is now known: He hated liberals and targeted the Unitarian church because of its liberal social attitude.

“It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement,” Chief Owen said of the suspect, Jim D. Adkisson, 58.

UPDATE: This post was superseded by “America Has Become a Country That Rewards Cruelty and Stupidity” But comment away if that will make you happy.

Does not giving a crap if someone is dying and having nothing good to say about “said” dying person make you a bad person?

Lee Atwater Apologizes

This Novak stuff got me thinking about Lee Atwater, the Henry Ford of modern day Republican smears and dirty tricks.

Turns out Atwater, when faced with death from a brain tumor, decided that lying, smearing political adversaries, degrading the national dialogue and poisoning the well of American politics was a bad idea. Continue reading
