It is Down to Three

Howard Fineman of MSNBC has reported that Obama has narrowed his shortlist to three:

Indiana Senator Evan Bayh; Delaware Senator Joe Biden; and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine

I do not want Bayh, for he is too DLC, but I do want both Biden and Kaine, and so it is a tough choice between those two.

Update: A Daily Kos unscientific poll shows Biden the leading choice among site readers, by a margin of 46% (Biden) to 39% for Kaine and 13% for Bayh.

Shorter Loudell Report

McCain is funny but it is a mean, private and hurtful kind of humor. Barack Obama doesn’t have a funny bone.

This must be comforting news to people who make their Presidential choices based on complete bullshit.

Links?

Such a nice night. I think I’ll take a trip around the block and see who is linking to us.

First but not least Mike Matthews who was enjoying Al Mascitti vs. Liz Allen maybe a bit too much.

We are also linked to Delawarecurmudgeon who says…

Speaking of Tommywonk, don’t forget the fundraiser organized by Delaware Liberal to help with his expenses in attending as Delaware’s Official Blogger to the convention. All you need to do is show up at Catherine Rooney’s at around 7:30 PM this Thursday, 7/31, in order to cast your vote (I believe each vote requires a $5.00 donation) for Delaware’s Hottest Blogger.

I really don’t care who Delaware’s Hottest Blogger is; I just want to contribute what will be an admittedly paltry sum to Tommywonk’s travel fund so maybe he can sneak out and get himself some really delicious trans-fat induced donut (if he can find one) in Denver next month.

And Sharon (who knew she had a blog?) at Gold Plated Bitch on Wheels, who says DelawareLiberal is evil or something. I’m not sure to be honest. We are linked in the middle of a sentence and I don’t get the meaning (if one was intended.)

Then there is Kavips who thinks that in the absence of a bad guy like Harris McDowell trying to scuttle a Wind Power Deal, the Delaware blogosphere is a bit fragmented these days …aaaaaand that maybe we are a bit obsessed with who is Delaware’s hottest blogger …aaaaaand trying too hard to make “Adgate” reverberate. In his (her?) words…

In a detached way it almost seems like we are sifting too hard, forcing out controversies in otherwise everyday occurrences, then fanning the flames, just because we have too little to argue about…

Steve Newton at Delaware Libertarian who has a nearly impossible post up that ends up agreeing with Pandora that…

“Unconditional compassion doesn’t exist.” She’s right: it doesn’t.
Yet it should–and I find it a worthwhile goal to strive for

God bless high aspirations.

Rendell Wants Biden.

Fast Eddie of the North wants Papa Joe to be Vice President.

From Bloomberg News:

Biden, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would add expertise in foreign policy and the war on terrorism to the Democratic ticket, Rendell said in an interview on Bloomberg Television on Monday.

“They would mesh together very nicely,” Rendell said.

Rendell, 64, who backed New York Senator Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries, said Biden is a “good campaigner” and “would compliment Senator Obama’s tremendous domestic policy experience.”

Rendell also points out that Biden was born in Pennsylvania, which may help an Obama-Biden ticket garner votes there.  Well, no matter who Obama’s running mate is, Obama will win Pennsylvania.  Like New Jersey, Republicans like to think that Pennsylvania is in play every four years, and every four years they sink money into the state, and every four years, they lose it.

So one gaffe prone fast talker wants another to be Vice President.   No surprise there.

Latino Debate Tomorrow

In the first gubernatorial debate since Adgate, the Bluewater Wind deal, and the Eminent Domain Debacle, John Carney, Jack Markell and Mike Protack will appear together in a forum sponsored by La Esperanza, the Latin Community Center and Voices Without Borders, in a Delaware’s first debate focusing on Latino issues.  The debate will take place at the Dover Downs Conference Center at 7 pm tomorrow.

However, I wonder if the debate will focus entirely on Latino issues.  Could there be an opportunity for Jack and John to address Adgate and the other contentious issues that have arisen between over the last weeks?

Given that the September 9th primary is fast approaching, I am sure one or both of the Democratic candidates will seek some confrontation with the other.  Having a debate concentrating on Latino issues does not bar such confrontation, since Latino Delawareans are also concerned about alternative energy, the economy, healthcare, good and open government, ethics and property rights.  Those are Latino issues too.   But the more interesting thing to me is the presence of Mike Protack at a Latino debate, and the absence of Bill Lee.

First, given Mike Protack’s recent criticism of Bill Lee’s short lived approval of driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, I wonder what reception will greet Mr. Protack.   It is one thing to attempt to win a GOP primary using the failed wedge issue of illegal immigration.  It is quite another to do so at a debate sponsored by Latino groups.

Second, GOP Frontrunner Bill Lee will not be attending due to his “policy” of not debating prior to the September 9th primary.   Here, Bill Lee is demonstrating cowardice.   Obviously he has declined debates with Protack because he and his fellow establishment Republicans view Protack as a perennial nuisance, and they rather not give him a voice in this election.   But if all Protack is is a nuisance, why would Bill Lee be afraid of debating him?  If he is such a better candidate than Protack, with better Republican positions, surely Mr. Lee can defeat Protack on the issues in any debate at any time.   I hope Protack points out Lee’s cowardly absence from this debate.  I am sure he will.

If you want to go to the debate, bus transportation is available from both La Esperanza in Georgetown and the Latin American Community Center in Wilmington. For more information, call La Esperanza at 854-9262, or the LACC at 655-7338.

Comment Rescue: Atkins is no Democrat

DagsboroDem writes…

Atkins is no Democrat, he wants prayer in public school and pushed legislation to bring back paddling.

Very true. It is not simply prayer.  He, along with Hocker and a few other esteemed SC Reps wanted to make Jesus the official deity of the Indian River School Board District.

We believe that one of the keys to our greatness as a nation has been our acknowledgment of God’s grace, our faith in Him and the willing and active participation of our people to worship God as they see fit. Since our country’s founding, we have been “one nation under God.” That link is as undeniable as the money we carry in our pockets inscribed with the phrase “in God We Trust.”

That is from a letter that they wrote to support the IRSD in its decision to drive out the Dobrich’s,  a Jewish family that had the gall to asked for less Christian prostletizing at IRHS school graduations.

Of course, Atkins sock puppets will now relate to us how wanting to drive away jews and make Jesus the official deity of IRSD actually helps Atkins in this backwards district.

Del State News Adgate Coverage Continues To Kick The NJ’s Ass

A few days ago Delawaredem blogged on Drew Volturo’s Adgate story which (unlike the NJ) didn’t give equal weight to Carney’s BS damage controll campaign.

Today, Volturo notes the Progressive Dems have urged the state party to change its strategy, but that’s not all. He also reports that $14,000 was spent on the divisive ads (not the previsouly disclosed $7,500) and included Karen Peterson’s explaination for why the story has legs.

“ The ad rubs people the wrong way on two fronts — it’s party money being spent, and its content is wrong,” said Sen. Peterson, adding that the ad made it sound like the lieutenant governor was the sole driving force behind the wind farm deal.

Keeping it real

This isn’t going to be good at all… I can’t ignore it any longer, nor should any of us. Get ready, b/c it is going to be the story of August, typically a month for Court TV to shine or some mother that killed her baby to be all over the news.

Well, the Dems have their own Newt Gingrich on their hands.   I’m sure it’s true and he is going to have the baby to prove it.

Nevermind…

On page 3 of today’s NJ dead tree edition we find this gem…

Corrections

Clarification: George Meldrum of Wilmington said Monday that he held a fundraiser for state Treasurer Jack Markell in August 2005, not the spring of 2007 as he told the News Journal on Friday. (snip) Meldrum apologized for the incorrect date and said that Markell’s use of his money for the 2006 campaign was appropriate.

Whoopsie…only two years off. Well I guess that’s what happens when you rush out some transparently asinine damage control. Maybe if Beth Miller was a journalist instead of a press release transcribing hack she could have sifted out that lie mistake before it made it into print.

Minner/Carney DEDO is a joke

I don’t really need to comment here. The Minner/Carney administration approach to economic development speaks for itself.

Brandywine Hundred, Del. —

More financial service companies could expand into Delaware thanks to a tax incentive bill signed into law by Gov. Ruth Ann Minner on July 22.

Senate Bill 213 creates new tax rules for asset management corporations, letting the companies choose to pay taxes based on gross receipts instead of property, wages and sales.

Asset management corporations are defined in the bill as companies that receive at least 90 percent of gross receipts from advising clients about intangible assets.

Defining asset management corporations and freeing them from an onerous tax system will help attract more corporations to Delaware, said Judy McKinney-Cherry, director of the Delaware Economic Development Office.

“Senate Bill 213, the asset management corporations’ legislation, is a testament to Delaware’s agility, Delaware’s spirit of cooperation and ability to modernize our laws to remain competitive,” said McKinney-Cherry, during the bill signing ceremony at the office of BlackRock, Inc., in the Bellevue Corporate Center.
