On Drinking Liberally

Filed in National by on August 2, 2008

I have been on the road for the past two days heading up to the Great White North and have been unable post. And as I type this I am riding in the passenger seat of the Civic hybrid trying not to criticize Mrs. Geeks driving.

The event at Catherine Rooney’s went even better than I had originally hoped. Not only was the contribution to Tom’s DNCC fund about $300 more than I had dared wish for, but the turnout of bloggers and our readers was phenomenal. Having Allan Loudell there even lent it an aura of legitimacy. I think that at some point, Celia Cohen must have poked her head in the door and saw the proverbial writing on the wall.

I will leave it to Tom to really bring us back to earth. He announced that the final political hurdle of the Bluewater Wind battle had been crossed earlier in the day and that he had it on good authority that one of the most influential factors in the whole process was citizen involvement. I know that bloggers were but one of the citizen groups, but I was nonetheless proud of the victory. I hope the rest of the groups toasted their success as much as we did on Thursday night.

All in all, if you made it to Drinking Liberally on Thursday night, you were better for it. Big shout-outs to the conservatives that entered the lions den, Tyler Nixon and the teetotaler Joanne Christian. Tyler was pretty busy schmoozing, but Joanne was engaging, friendy and very well-received. I swear that woman has a bloggers heart.

For those of you that were unable to come out, and you know who you are, we missed you. Hopefully we can all get together and do this at the Bloggers conference in six months.

I will try to write a few dispatches from the North Country, but the availability of hot spots in Cape Breton doesn’t look good.

I guess Alan Levine’s funding ran out for Grapevine – notice her book was only available at first at Happy Harrys

On Cape Breton Island, I recommend setting up base camp near the beach at Ingonish, as well as a late afternoon visit to Cabot’s Bay, and don’t miss taking the road all the way to Meat Cove….

Let’s see…first of August? ..You should be able to catch some Celtic festivals… They spring up all over… They are natural, with just outstanding musicians getting together and having fun….

P.S. Sneak some rocks back…. They make nice conversation pieces in your yard…..

    If it’s your first time there,…. I’m jealous…..It’s so awesome….

It is my first trip up here. I am in New Brunswick at the moment. About 6 hours to go.

Stella, you have more intestinal fortitude than I. I had the AC running most of the time, but still didn’t have to fill up (12 Gallons) until we crossed the ME state line. Traffic in DE, NJ, NY and CT. Cost me several hours and no doubt several MPG’s.

Kavips, what size of rocks are you suggesting? It seems that if it is big enough to be a conversation piece, it is too big to throw in my trunk…
