Bush Responsible for Georgian-Russian War

Literally.

US special forces trained the same exact Georgian troops that invaded South Ossetia just weeks before the invasion by Georgia of South Ossetia.

Georgian, US troops start military exercise amid escalating tensions with Russia

July 15, 2008

Georgian and U.S. troops started a joint military exercise Tuesday amid growing tensions between the ex-Soviet republic and Russia, a Georgian defense ministry official said.

About 1,200 U.S. servicemen and 800 Georgians will train for three weeks at the Vaziani military base near the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, ministry spokesman Mindiya Arabuli said. The drills were planned months ago and are not related to recent tensions over two separatist Georgian regions that are backed by Moscow, he said.

[snip]

Georgia claims a string of recent explosions and border skirmishes in Abkhazia and South Ossetia are part of a Russian plan to annex the regions, while Russia claims Georgia is gearing up for a mid to take control of the regions by force.

And when the entire planet was distracted by the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing on August 8, that is precisely what happened.   Georgian forces entered the South Ossetian territory, prompting Russia to invade Georgia.  To be clear, I am not defending Russian actions here, nor am I attacking Georgian actions.  This is their dispute with a long history going back before even the Soviet Union’s collapse.

The point is this: what exactly was the Bush administration’s involvement in the instigation and lead-up to this invasion during the Olympics and right before an election?   What was Bush doing?

It’s the Bush/Cheney policy of leaving Nothing Unbroken. The more stuff that is broken the longer it’s going to take to fix, and the longer they and their cronies can continue to raid the treasury, the economy, the environment, and the souls of America’s middle class.

Also, they are leaving behind sleeper cells in DOJ, DOD, EPA and every other federal agency. That will make the challenge even greater.

  3. There was a long discussion on this subject this morning in the Eschaton comments beginning with this:

McCain hasn’t been able to put a dent in Obama’s lead all summer. Not with negative ads, not with personal attacks, not with anything. His press accessability and his town hall meetings have been nothing but disastrous. The only thing he shows the slightest lead in is foreign policy.A few weeks ago, Karl Rove, Condi Rice, Scheunneman, and Shrum meet with Saakashvili, who wants desperately to be a member of NATO and is paying Scheunneman a lot of money to make that happen.Saakashvili cannot be a totally drooling idiot, to think that he alone could defeat Russia if he were to take them on. He had to believe that someone was going to back him up. I think they told him that he would be backed up and that McCain would get elected and could get him into NATO.Rove, Rice, Scheunneman and Shrum knew it too. But they also knew that McCain needed something to kick his campaign into gear.I fully believe that they promised Saakashvili “something” and then used him just long enough to show Americans that Russia is still scary. It has accomplished these things. It played to McCain’s one strength, and gave him something to talk about for an entire week, (even though he screwed that up too). It let Condi shine as secretary of state, and I think she is very seriously being considered as McCain’s VP. And now George Will is telling us that we need McCain in the White House since Russia has reared its ugly head. I think this was all pretty well coordinated by all of these people. It’s Rovian right down the line.foolme1ns | 08.16.08 – 10:02 am | #

And that’s why Obama should pick Biden as his VP – no one understands the Cold War like Biden. And the voters would have more confidence in having Biden as part of the team, not Boring Bayh.

    Nailed it, Nancy.

Why else would American troops train weeks before with the same Georgian forces that were there at the start the incursion?

Maybe it’s for the same reason we’re in Iraq, and it’s not about democracy….

Great, Rebecca has some crazy conspiracy theory. Care to back that up with any real facts?

What we must do is make sure that our democrats don’t fall into the resurgence of “cold war” thinking to win. We must have major diplomacy. It’s all about the failed Bush foreign policy strategy. We who believe in ending the perpetual war strategy of the neo con republicans should be very careful where NATO is headed.

NATO was built up by the Bush regime to be used for military actions around the world. The Bush regime can no longer count on the UN to rubberstamp every incursion they wish to engage in, in fact the UN was formed to end these incursions and has been undermined by US, England and Israel. Bush/McCain need NATO to grow into the biggest military the world has ever seen.

We do not need a new “cold war” we need cool heads to end the right wing red hot “bluster” on nations that happen to have oil. Georgia invaded South Osetia and killed thousands, bombing hospitals and residential areas. The US/Israel/England didnt think the Russians would react at all, let alone act as agressively as they did in repelling Georgia.

Georgia is mainly armenian and christian. South Osetia have jewish populations, muslims and non faiths living there. Osetians do not want to be part of Georgia. They want to be independent as well, but will stand with Russia rather than be forced to be Georgians.

Beware of the NATO buildup. We who want peace around the world, must be very careful in our support for a greater larger NATO, with “war” on their mind. Lets not forget that Sassakavili made a statement on Glen Beck, that Georgia is part of the New World Order.
