The VP speech was written prior to Palin being chosen.
Putting Words in Palin’s Mouth
There was a flutter of attention when McCain campaign manager Rick Davis told a group of Post reporters and editors yesterday that his team was having to rework the vice presidential acceptance speech because the original draft, prepared before Gov. Sarah Palin was chosen, was too “masculine.” While we all wondered to ourselves what might make a speech masculine or feminine, no one batted an eye at the underlying revelation: that the campaign was writing the nominee’s speech before knowing who the nominee would be
Did you know this about Obama:
Obama takes an unusually hands-on approach to his speech writing, more so than most politicians. His best writing time comes late at night when he’s all alone, scribbling on yellow legal pads. He then logs these thoughts into his laptop, editing as he goes along. This is how he wrote both of his two best selling books—Dreams from My Father and The Audacity of Hope—staying up after Michelle and his two young daughters had long gone to bed, reveling in the late night quiet. For this speech Obama removed himself from the distractions at home and spent many nights in a room in the Park Hyatt Hotel in Chicago. These late-night sessions produced long, meandering texts that were then circulated to a close group of advisers, including Axelrod and Obama’s speechwriter Jon Favreau—a 27-year-old wunderkind wordsmith. “When you’re working with Senator Obama the main player on a speech is Senator Obama,” Axelrod said. “He is the best speechwriter in the group and he knows what he wants to say and he generally says it better than anybody else would.”
Compare and Contrast people….
I just got a call back from Chris Coons regarding tha workforce housing meeting last night. He was between campaign stops, so our conversation was very abbreviated. Hopefully I get another call back later.
It was his contention that these are not done deals, but he didn’t have the plans in front of him while we were talking. I told him that were were concerned because two people on the Appoquinimink School District had stated that the district knows absolutely nothing about it.
Coons was of the impression that these are subject to the same scrutiny as any new development would be. I told him that we had asked, point blank, if these were done deals and if there was anything that we could do to stop these projects, all we got were non-committal glances from our elected officials at each other.
I am hoping that I get a call back from him soon. But maybe not.
I also spoke to C.R. McLeod from Coons’ office. I think he is the one that pushed Coons to call me back. He let me know that the next New Castle County Council meeting is September 16th at 7PM at the City/County meeting. Land Use committee will actually meet from 3:30-5:00 on the 16th as well.
The one thing that I did get out of all of this is that the County legal team believes that there is nothing that Chris Coons can do to impose an executive order to stop further applications for conversion to Workforce Housing. This is bad. It means that between now and September 16th, the developers in the county can still submit requests for even more developments and even if the county puts a moratorium on workforce housing, these could be grandfathered in.
I’ll post more after I speak to Land Use or Penrose Hollins.
Back in 2004, we all remember certain Catholic priests and bishops threatening to deny communion to John Kerry should he dare enter their church. As a Catholic, I was offended by that because it seemed to be anti-Christian. I think we Christians often forget who we are supposed to be following (i.e. Jesus Christ). Would Jesus deny communion in such a fashion? No. He would want to talk to the supposed transgressor about the issues that seek to divide us. Well, at least I think so.
Anyway, that is why I am very encouraged by the words of Incoming Bishop W. Francis Malooly of the Diocese of Wilmington.
From WDEL (by way of the Catholic magazine “Dialog”):
DIALOG: “Regarding the candidates themselves, the reception of communion by Catholic candidates who support abortion rights remains an issue, one that has received added attention recently with the selection of Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. Some American bishops have had public confrontations but most still seem to handle the issue by talking to the candidate privately.”
Bishop Malooly: “I look forward to the opportunity to enter into a dialogue on a number of issues with Sen. Biden and other Catholic leaders in the Diocese of Wilmington. However, I do not intend to get drawn into partisan politics nor do I intend to politicize the Eucharist as a way of communicating Catholic Church teaching. It is critical to keep the lines of communication open if the church is going to make her teachings understood and, please God, accepted. It is my belief that Catholics of all occupations have the same duty to examine their own consciences before determining their own worthiness for the reception of communion.
I think I will get a lot more mileage out of a conversation trying to change the mind and heart than I would out of a public confrontation. That might not make some people happy who feel there ought to be a confrontation but I have to follow my own conscience and try to do what I can for the long term.”

Joe Biden did it. Now Tom Ridge did it. In the psychology of America, John McCain is George W. Bush.

Well, this disqualifies the McCain-Palin ticket from any consideration, for if Mrs. Palin cannot handle questions from our VERY compliant media, she cannot handle the pressures of the office.
According to Nicole Wallace of the McCain campaign, the American people don’t care whether Sarah Palin can answer specific questions about foreign and domestic policy. According to Wallace — in an appearance [Carney from TIME] did with her this morning on Joe Scarborough’s show — the American people will learn all they need to know (and all they deserve to know) from Palin’s scripted speeches and choreographed appearances on the campaign trail and in campaign ads.
What cowards McCain and Palin are. But I don’t blame them. If I had no answers, I wouldn’t want to be questioned either.

Developers are almost transparent. They don’t give a crap about the communities they create or destroy. Then only care about profit.
So what is a developer to do if the real estate market tanks and they are left holding a bunch of land that can only have high-quality, low density single family homes built on it?
Simple, write a law (or 3) and hand it to New Castle County Council. Make the law say that you can convert your plans for beautiful, low density single family homes into a plan for poorly constructed, multi-family dwellings with no review by any state or county planning agency. County Council will certainly approve it, since the only people that show up to discuss the law are the lawyers paid by the developers to attend.
In no time, you can have your apartments built, bought by landlords and you can retire to a small, undeveloped island and spend your days not thinking about the scrambling of school districts, county services, DNREC, DelDOT, etc.
I’m in the wrong business.

I’ve spent the past 8 years trying to get rid of Mike Castle, and 25 hours ago I was still pulling for Karen in spite of her lackluster campaign and unhinged, lunatic supporters.
However, after two very strange calls from Karen in the past 24 hours, I am now 100% certain that she should never be granted the confidence and faith of the electorate under any circumstances.
During the first call yesterday, she claimed that Delaware Liberal “guaranteed” a Mike Castle victory by endorsing Jerry Northington. On the face of it, that claim is nonsense. But Okay, she was upset. Whatever.
Then this morning she called to claim that Delaware Liberal was:
1) Behind the vandalism of her car and
2) Responsible for having her office computers infected with a virus. [Note: she said that someone who had access to the computers gave it the virus.]
She further said that she was contacting the police because “You need to stop this.”
I told her that contacting the police was the exact right thing to do, because if what she said was right, she was the victim of serious crimes. I continued, “but what does all this that have to do with the site or with me? Why are you calling me about it?”
She didn’t have much of a response for that question other than to say that Delaware Liberal was the hub of negativity about her, she also insisted that we stop doing whatever we are doing.
I had to explain all of the goings on to my wife upon my return home. By the time I was done, I couldn’t write it up without drooling on the keyboard. Kavips wrote the piece that I wanted to write. Go read it. Please. Then call Chris Coons. Tell ’em an angry mob (and DelawareLiberal) sent you.
