Early Voting! Updated
Yes, it really is getting close to the end — people are now voting and this is when it gets really exciting.
The AP publishes a roundup of key early voting states from around the country.
The numbers are astonishing (and most early voting started Monday):
About 12 percent of the state’s [Georgia] roughly 5.6 million registered voters have already cast ballots for the Nov. 4 general election. Statewide on Friday 55,709 people voted.
Nearly 8.5 percent of Colorado’s 3.2 million registered voters have already cast ballots by mail or at early-voting polling places.
There are long lines and the state is adding machines and workers in Florida.
CNN suggests that the numbers of folks coming out now to vote suggest that this may be another record-breaking turnout year. Which has got to redound the the Dems benefit, since Ds have the registration advantage this cycle.
And why doesn’t Delaware have early voting provisions?
UPDATE: Gallup is tracking the numbers of people voting and so far 10% of registered voters have done so.

On NPR a waitress in Charlotte NC said she stood in line for an hour to early vote and it was her third attempt.

Yikes! I need to start thinking about what I would be doing right now if Obama was trailing by 4 points.
I’m not so sure I’m for this early voting stuff.
I think to Powell’s endorsement, and how that may influence greatly, or shift a vote–what a shame for you Obama supporters who may have lost a few to early voting. I would rather see 24 hr. voting instead on election day. The polls aren’t open long enough. I could easily be working a 12 hr. shift, 90 minutes away, and not make it to the polls.
Where there are alot of people and clearly not enough voting machines/people to man the polls, having some limited voting avail prior to official election day could be a good use of resources.
I would like early voting option since I need to travel for work and find myself dancing around client requirements to try to stay home long enough to get to vote on Tuesday AM. In years I am not traveling, I like to volunteer — and it is good to have voting out of the way so you can commit to your task.
When exactly did we decide that people could vote before election day? Shit, they used to close bars for the event, now it’s just like pre-picking your fantasy football draft.
