How Much Does It Cost to Run (and Win)?

Filed in National by on November 2, 2008

Let’s face it. You need money to win. How much? I suppose we’ll know with some specificity on November 5th. But in the meantime – here are my general guesses about what the winning candidates will have spent by office.

State Rep: You need $40,000 to run decent campaign.

State Senate: $60 – $80 k

2nd Tier Statewide (e.g. Lt. Governor/Insurance Commissioner): $300 – $400k

1st Tier Statewide: (Governor/US Congress) $1 million.

Indeed, we’ll know better on Wednesday. A lot depends on the particular race. There are some state House candidates who ran solid, probably victorious campaigns for around $25k. Excluding the primary, where money was a huge factor, Markell could have probably gotten by with far less than $1M in the general…

I guess Jack’s Pac was able to help fund other candidates.
