Jamie Wyeth probably got some breaks because his Dad (Andrew) and Grandpa (N.C.) were famous artists, but he was a talented guy in his own right.

There has always been a debate in the art world about whether illustrators are actually artists. N.C. was an illustrator and hence, in some circles, he wasn’t considered an artist. I think that was pure drivel but what do I know?

Andrew’s stuff is totally amazing, although once again controversial, because his photo-realism style was not in vogue for most of the time he has been painting. I love the Helga pictures and the one of the body emerging from the snow is deeply disturbing.

And Jamie is just as talented as his father and grandfather. More Maine than Brandywine but still remarkable art.

The one in the family who somehow didn’t get the DNA was Andrew’s sister Caroline. One of her paintings is usually on display at the Brandywine River Museum and you can compare and contrast and see the difference between a true artist and somebody who paints with skill. Poor Caroline just didn’t get it.
