A Good Night For All

Wow.  Let me say first that Deer Field Fine Wines knows how to throw a party.  They came up huge last night with a full on extravaganza of wine, food and hospitality.  If you need wine, you need Deerfield.

I am still tabulating the guests that paid at the door, but we are going to end up with over $1000 going to Autism Delaware.  This should go a long way toward making the lives of autistic children and adults easier and more productive.

I would like to thank Lt. Governor, Matt Denn for his attendance last night.  He was, as always, a great speaker and wonderful guest.  Also, Governor Jack Markell recorded a greeting for the Inaugural Ball which was played on a big screen TV to rave reviews.  Biden and Obama were no-shows… 🙂

Donviti came up huge, also.  Once you got in the door of the place last night, that was all Donviti.  Nice work, my friend.

Grand total, we had around 80 guests including John Kowalko, Bill Dunn and John Brady.  From the blogosphere, Mike Matthews, Redwaterlilly, Randy Nelson and RSmitty, MJ, KarmicJay and Tommywonk.  Plus, we had the full compliment of DelawareLiberal contributors.

I’ll write more on the evening later, but it really was a great shindig with a lot of really wonderful people.  Thank you all for coming out and helping out a good cause and to celebrate the great victories of November.

And the Media Gets Played By the GOP Again

Remember that recent CBO report that media types and Republicans have been breathlessly citing as an analysis as to why the stimulus package won’t work?

Well, it turns out that no such report exists:

Reports of a recent study by the Congressional Budget Office, showing that the vast majority of the money in the stimulus package won’t be spent until after 2010, have Democrats on the defensive and the GOP calling for a pullback in wasteful spending.

Funny thing is, there is no such report.

“We did not issue any report, any analysis or any study,” a CBO aide told the Huffington Post.

Rather, the nonpartisan CBO ran a small portion of an earlier version of the stimulus plan through a computer program that uses a standard formula to determine a score — how quickly money will be spent. The score only dealt with the part of the stimulus headed for the Appropriations Committee and left out the parts bound for the Ways and Means or Energy and Commerce Committee.

And apparently the portion of the bill that the CBO reviewed has been substantially changed since the data was provided to the CBO. The preliminary numbers were leaked by Mitch McConnell’s office — and while McConnell’s people didn’t make sure that the reporters knew the limitations of this data, it took until the past couple of days for other reporters (and it looks like just the Huffington Post and American Prospect, so far) to get a good look at the document and to actually verify with the CBO what this data really covers.

So I’m trying to understand — the DC GOP has been passing as much misinformation as they possibly can to the media (misinformation that eventually gets caught and exposed and corrected with as much derision as possible for the traditional media) for the past 8 years AND THEY ARE STILL FALLING FOR THIS MESS? An institution that no longer commands the respect that it once did really has to account for easy stuff like this. It isn’t hard to fact check CBO data, and it is not hard to describe for an audience the limits of the information that you are presenting. Or maybe the job of the traditional media really is to just write down what someone tells you and print it. In which case, they really need to stop looking down their noses at bloggers and new media venues.

Afternoon Interlude: A Nelson Laugh At Limbaugh

Rush caved on his hoping for Obama to fail…

But I just want to say, folks, look I support Obama. I just don’t support his policies. I support our president, like I have supported all presidents.

Ha ha…Eat it Sharon you loser. Suck on that fat ass movement conservatives!

Lessons Learned: Is it okay to hope for the President to fail? No.

Does it make you an unpatriotic a-hole to hope for the President of the United States to fail? Yes.

11,411 Pounds

That is how much food we sorted today at the Food Bank.  We had 39 adults and a gaggle of children there sorting food, checking expiration dates, building backpacks for other children and all of the tasks associated with moving that much food around.  We built 354 boxes of various foodstuffs and got them ready for distribution.

Thank you to all of the people that came out to volunteer their time for this worthy cause and for making our event such a success.  And a special thanks to Governor Jack Markell for coming out and lending a helping hand to the Food Bank and our event.

Pictures and video to follow.
