UPDATED: Glenn Beck Loses Advertisers

Filed in National by on August 11, 2009

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

GEICO says good-bye:

“On Tuesday, August 4, GEICO instructed its ad buying service to redistribute its inventory of rotational spots on FOX-TV to their other network programs, exclusive of the Glenn Beck program,” said a spokesperson for GEICO Corporate Communications in an email to ColorOfChange.org.  “As of August 4, GEICO no longer runs any paid advertising spots during Mr. Beck’s program.”

Sargento follows suit:

We deeply appreciate your reaching out to us and sharing your comments and concerns about Sargento ads appearing during “The Glenn Beck Show.” We sat down with the marketing department to talk about it and I learned that we buy time periods not specific programs. But in any event, they’ve made the decision to exclude that program from our future ad rotation. Simply stated, Sargento ads won’t be airing during that show. Again, thanks for contacting us.

Guess they use to surround him.  Too bad, so sad.

UPDATE: Add Men’s Wearhouse to the list.

Thank you for contacting Men’s Wearhouse and bringing to our attention your concerns with the Glenn Beck program on Fox News. While we support free speech and do not make advertising decisions based on our own personal ideologies, after reviewing his recent incendiary comments we have decided to remove our advertising from his program. We hope that this decision will allow you to continue to patronize Men’s Wearhouse. I would encourage you to please share our decision with anyone else who may have expressed a similar concern.

Thank you again for contact Men’s Wearhouse.

Sincerely,

Matt Stringer

If you haven’t signed Color of Change’s petition that is going out to these advertisers, you can do so here.

There was a list of phone numbers someplace that I can’t find right now….

  2. Miscreant says:

This effort would have some credibility if Olbermann was included.

  3. olberman called the president a racist? Shit, I missed that?

  4. pandora says:

    The list keeps growing.

  5. jason330 says:

    This picture sums it up.

  6. What? You are applauding the punishment of celebrities by big corporations for their political speech? Didn’t you consider that to be un-American when the “victims” were the Dixie Chicks?

  7. 1. Yes

Glen Beck calls President a racist now is on par with Music stars standing up against a war.

    lol.

  8. MJ says:

RWR is an idiot. Hey Tex, do you teach a some right-wing Taliban school down there in TexASS?

  9. You guys could HELP this effort by posting the link for your readers to voice their complaints and get in on the action. The link was posted on DEWay the other day if you’d like it.

  10. jason330 says:

    Thanks for the link Nancy.

  11. callerRick says:

Care to compare Beck’s numbers to the liberal ‘competition?’ Sort of like comparing Limbaugh to ‘Air America.’ Ratings data is soooo inconvenient; like BO’s latest poll numbers.

  12. jason330 says:

Some portion of Fox viewers agree with Beck that we need another terrorist attack against the United States. It is a free country.

  13. anonone says:

    It is a free country.

What country are you talking about?

  14. Geezer says:

“Care to compare Beck’s numbers to the liberal ‘competition”

Yes, three million bigots can’t be wrong!

  15. Dorian Gray says:

Rush and Beck will always have great ratings. “Liberals” are too busy reading books to bother with trash TV and radio.

  16. Liberals spend a lot more time on the internet I think.

  17. Very glad to see Men’s Wearhouse on the list of those withdrawing sponsorship. Makes ‘bulo glad he signed the petition.

He can now patronize his fave clothing store with a clear conscience. And you thought that everything he wore was either (a) from the King Sears Collection or (b) freebies…

  18. shortstuff says:

This is great! About time that companies stand up and take a stand against this b.s. I can’t believe someone is comparing Beck with the Dixie Chicks. Although I don’t listen to the Dixie Chicks, I think it’s rather demeaning that they are even categorized remotely close to this moron. Saying you don’t agree to a war being held is rather different than accusing someone that he hates white people.

  19. So what you are saying is that some political speech is more equal than other political speech?

Both Beck and the Dixie Chicks have spoken contemptuously against the sitting President. You guys defend the one and condemn the corporate interests that flexed their muscles to express disapproval of the sentiment. The other you condemn, and urge big business to punish the speaker for the wordfs you disagree with. It appears that you really didn’t have a principled objection to the “piling on” against the Dixie Chicks — you just supported their message and were offended that others did not.

By the way, I urged my local Houston stations to continue playing the Dixie Chicks.

And as for my school — it is a public school in a 90+ percent minority community with high poverty rates. The sort of place area most of you liberals would be afraid to enter, and where you would be unwilling to send your kids because of your fear of “those sort of people.”

  20. Oh, and short stuff (and the rest) — let’s compare apples and apples. If it was OK for Kanye West and other liberals to say George W. Bush was a racist and hated black people, why is it not OK to suggest that Obama is a racist and hates white people? Seems the opinions are equally valid, and based upon similar quality evidence.

  21. pandora says:

RWR, please stop putting words in our mouths – and, while you’re at it, stop making assumptions about where we live and what schools our children attend.

If I choose not to patronize a company that advertises on Glenn Beck, that’s my choice. If I choose to add my voice to other similar voices, that, too, is my choice. If other people choose not to listen/buy Dixie Chick music because of what they said… that is their choice.

Perhaps you should use the awesome power of your blog to create a counter petition – which is your right.

  22. cassandra_m says:

So don’t buy any Kanye West CDs and you are even, sheesh.

  23. jason330 says:

By the way, I urged my local Houston stations to continue playing the Dixie Chicks.

    What a hero.

  24. MJ says:

RWR – Bush did hate people of color. Why would Obama hate himself (he’s half white or did you miss that piece of history)? And for your information, I grew up in a major metropolitan city and the schools I attended were racially diverse between whites, Chicanos, and blacks. While many of the less tolerant fled to the suburbs when bussing was ordered, my family stayed put. And I spent 18 years living in Washington DC which has a black majority population. So step off, fool.

Now, where do you flee to after work everyday?

  25. Geezer says:

Greg: Fair point. ONe difference: The main player in the Dixie Chicks affair was Clear Channel Radio, which owns more than 1,000 radio stations and was at the time run by execs who were currying favor with conservatives in general and Bush in particular (if you’re being cynical, they had big regulatory issues to worry about). Of course, that never really came into play; most stations that program country music attract a more conservative audience anyway.

The Beck advertisers are caving in to a different sort of pressure: Fear of a boycott by African-AMericans. You’ll notice (maybe you have commented on) that Don Imus was dropped by CBS because of exactly that fear. They never even waited to see whether these interest groups could actually influence consumers, they just reacted in naked fear.

So, while I agree with you on your general point, I think the differences in the details are interesting.

  26. MJ — having read his books, I’d argue that Obama is pretty conflicted about that white blood, and not too fond of white folks in general (family ties notwithstanding). That is just as much evidence as you folks have (more, actually) for alleged Bush antipathy towards minorities.

  27. Might surprise you, pandora, but i’ve got no use for Beck. Never have, though i do from time to time agree with him on a point or two.

And I don’t have any problem withadvertisers dropping Beck over his views — and had no problem with corporate decisions to dropp the Dixie Chicks, even though I argued against doing it.

And i’m just basing my assumptions about you folks on my experience with liberals over the last 30 years or so — they embrace the poor and minorities while trying their best to avoid actually associating with them. Sort of like the assumptions you folks make about me because I live in Texas.

  28. And MJ, I won’t “step off”. Indeed, I challenge you and your gfellow liberals here to “step up”.

  29. jason330 says:

“step up” everybody and play words games with a nut bag shut in who knows that his comparison is bullshit, but hangs around saying stupid shit because he craves the meager human contact he gets around here.

Better yet, “step up” and have your word games at his blog.

  30. Geezer says:

C’mon, you don’t take the Texas stuff seriously, do you? Everyone here knows there are many more liberals in Texas than people in Delaware. It’s just fun to take shots at Texans because, in general, they brag so much about their state and get so upset when you insult it.

  31. sillylazypoorperson says:

And i’m just basing my assumptions about you folks on my experience with liberals over the last 30 years or so — they embrace the poor and minorities while trying their best to avoid actually associating with them. Sort of like the assumptions you folks make about me because I live in Texas.

    that’s f’in funny

  32. Maria Evans says:

~ “Bush did hate people of color.” ~

That’s not really reflective of his circle of friends. Like Condi Rice, for example, they’ve been friends since his daddy was President…

  33. Geezer — thank you for making my point explicit. I’m tweaking you guys like you tweak me. I actually like most of you around her — indeed, can think of only a single exception.

I don’t know what’s funnier: the “you folks” or the “my experience with liberals”.

  36. Geezer says:

With all due respect, I don’t think there’s any evidence Bush disliked people of color on a personal level. Are we confusing his policies with his personality?

  37. sillylazypoorperson says:

sho he ditint, he haz plenty of black frendz

  38. Patriot says:

When someone is telling the truth, they try anything to shut them up… They are scared of him plain and simple.

  39. jason330 says:

Patriot, Thank you for the view from planet Fucknut.

  40. Obama Obots says:

You people are left wing moonbats. Fox News is king of the ratings because your left wing nut job loonies, aka NBC/MSNBC/CBS/ABC, are so far biased to the left that no one wants to watch your liberal propaganda. We had to for decades and now we have a choice. Guess we made it huh?

Go back into your closets losers!

  41. cassandra_m says:

    Talking Point FAIL.

    Big Time

  42. jason330 says:

State Farm just dropped its sponsorship of Beck.

  43. RWR says:

Most of the companies dropping ads are run by Libs anyway so its not like its a big deal…. What it comes down to is that Libs dont like it when their tactics are used against them, they now see the country is turning against them, and they are scared.

Beck was right, BHO is racist and has proven it in the past. If you were to truly read and follow what BHO has done you would realize that. He proved that with his comments about the Gates arrest.

  44. charles roberts says:

Attention Right WingNuts Beck is a german name so who is more like Hitler? Beck looks like an SS officer

  45. jason330 says:

I knew there was something about him that gave me the willies. Wait a second, it was all the stupid shit he has said, like agreeing with a guest that the United States needs to have another massive terrorists attack, that creeps me out.

  46. Howard says:

It’s so funny liberals can be hateful and racist and riot and murder in the streets and say we should be tolerant of it but if a moral person stands up for acting with good behavior, then the liberals say we are the ones who are intolerant.

That’s why liberals will fail in the end. They can’t play by their own standard and as Barney Frank and his ilk so clearly reinforce, they can’t even carry on a conversation when confronted with truth and logic

  47. jolia rala says:

    Mens Warehouse pandering to Liberals…. ha….ha ha….

Who do they think buys their suits?
Smelly Hippies and Welfare grabbing Social Parasites ???

No – – BUSINESS MEN BUY THEIR SUITS!!
    STUPID MOVE!!!

  48. Ramond T says:

    .
Entittlement Liberals aren’t the ones spending money!

I am Boycotting ANY Company that is so INTOLLERENT , and does not respect the 1st Ammendment, and pulls their advertising.
The Boycott is ON THEM !!!

I’m not political – but I do believe in FREE SPEACH for ALL (not just liberals)

  49. nemski says:

LOL jolia raia. Exit polls show that Obama and McCain were split evenly among high income voters, though Obama took the educated crowd (high school or better) with no problem.

    Thanks for playing.

  50. nemski says:

Hmm, I wonder who has linked to us now that the conservative cretins are coming in.

  51. Phil says:

It’s kinda funny how this boycott thing is only pushing his ratings higher.

  52. nemski says:

Yes, Phil, and after a car accident, traffic jams on the other side of the road as people gawk at the mayhem.

  53. Heh, I’m glad it’s not my thread they’re playing in.

It’s just so darned adorable the way these guys mangle the English language. Plus, I love how they think that companies not buying advertising on a certain program is unconstitutional. Also gotta love how they claim that fighting racism is “intollerant”. They’re almost parodies of themselves.
