Around The Horn Sunday

Filed in National by on August 16, 2009

This was a slow week. With no special election relatively imminent (the next one is on September 12), and with national stories dominating our conversation this week, local stories fell by the wayside. Thus, I decided to introduce the Delaware Blogosphere to new or previously unknown (at least to me) members of our small state community. And I want you all to send me links to other local Delaware blogs you are following that we are not covering.

The Palmer Lyceum
Scott P has some thoughts on the demonization of opponents and where that will lead us.
And he has an interest in local historical sites, including Brandywine Springs Park, which, when I lived in Sheridan Square, was one of my favorite places to go bike riding.

On Transmigration
No new local political posts this week, but we will be following him.

Delaware Business Blog
They have their own round-up on the business news of the week.

Vox Populi
Mark Headd has some suggestions on how to fix Department of Elections’ failure in posting results in the Special Election in the 19th.

Lt. Governor Matt Denn’s Blog
He reports on good news from the Markell Administration.

Delmarva Dealings
Cato wants Castle, Carper and Kaufman to hold townhalls so his right wing thugs can shut them down. He also reports on Governor Markell eliminating Delaware’s jury commissioner system. But he doesn’t like Markell reorganizing the Economic Development office.

Delaware Liberal
Rob Robinson is the Democrats’ candidate in the 37th RD special.
DL is the number one blog in Delaware, according to Alexa. We even beat out WDEL.
The GOP nominates a lobbyist for manufactured park owners (as posted to the tenants), Ruth Briggs King, to run in the 37th.
We report on the shady dealings of our Insurance Commissioner.
LiberalGeek offers a personal story on his wife’s experience with Melanoma.
The Conventional Wisdom in DC is Castle v. Biden, even though, if they paid attention to us and our friends, they would know there is only about a 25% chance that the race will happen.
A serial blow dart attacker???
Carper, Castle and Kaufman are foregoing townhalls, and I really don’t blame them. Jason reports that Kaufman wanted to do one, but did not want to upstate Carper or Castle. The Delaware Way!
‘Bulo analyzes what may be good politics but bad policy: Sexual Offender Registry Laws.
We get tips all the time. Most are anonymous rumor, and sometimes we err on the side of being not cautious in reporting the rumor, not as fact, but as rumor. This week and last we got the Coons rumor. The News Journal was not amused.
Ezra Temko brings equality to Newark municipal employees.
We had a guest post by the valiant Joanne Christian on our joint charity event with Miles for Melanoma.
Jason predicts a Protack loss to O’Whackjob and an O’Whackjob loss to Biden.
And we continue to wonder what Charlie Copeland is up to.

By the Numbers
John looks for a pattern in special election voting. He also looks at voting turnout rates in the 37th RD since 2002 to predict turnout in the upcoming election on September 12th.

Mike Musings
Mike has a series of posts about his family’s Hawaiian adventure. He has some great stories and pictures, but now I am very jealous.

Redwaterlily’s Ramblings
RWL reminds us of the upcoming Sussex County Annual Jamboree. It is one event I look forward to every year, so I’ll be there.

Delaware Libertarian
Steve congratulates Governor Markell on his issuance of Executive Order No. 8, which establishes that “the work atmosphere in Executive Branch Agencies shall be one that fosters mutual respect and understanding among persons of different gender, race, color, religion, national origin, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or military or veteran status.” Steve notes that this is a step forward for equality for the transgendered, and derides a certain critic who thinks such a category of human beings is just a “mental disorder.” It is a wonderous smackdown and everyone should read it.

Delaware Watch
Dana asks whether Castle, Kaufman and Carper have gone yellow\? He also delves into the complaints and allegations leveled at Elsmere police chief Liam Sullivan.

Delaware Way
Nancy reports on good news for Delaware’s children.
There will be two debates between Robinson (D) and Briggs King (R) in the 37th.
Nancy has a good idea as to who is dropping these rumors about Chris Coons: It is the Delaware GOP! Make sense.

Tommywonk
Delaware is on the brink of new energy era.

The Mourning Constitution
First, Brian offers his thoughts on the upcoming 2010 elections in Sussex County. And then Brian watches Protack’s latest Youtube manifesto and thinks he makes sense. Dear God, Mike Protack as a libertarian? I wonder if Steve Newton would approve. Meanwhile, Brian wants Delaware to declare its sovereignty like other southern states. Indeed, he calls our lawmakers cowards because they have not do so yet. Hey Brian, let me clue you in on something. The Libertarian Party will not enjoy political gain by following the Teabaggers/Deathers/Birthers example. We need a rational, honest opposition to the Democrats, not a copycat. I had hoped Delaware’s Libertarians would be ready to be that rational, honest and reasonable opposition. I was wrong.

Lower Slower Delaware
MJ has a very touching tribute on the anniversary of his mother’s death.

Resolute Determination
Not local there this week. Just lies about death panels. But Homegrown Boy has some thoughts on the travesty that is student-teacher sexual misconduct. He is right.

Kavips
He was silent completely this week. Hopefully he is just on vacation and not intimidated by that Burris thug.

Kilroy
I apologize for not covering Kilroy over the last few weeks, as my Google Reader missed his switch to WordPress. It was only after I checked his site did I realize the mistake. This week, he congratulates Mike Matthews on losing 100 pounds. You know, I miss Mike Matthews. Sure, he can be annoying and assine on occasion, but then again so can I. Being exclusively on Twitter is not the same, especially since I don’t follow Twitter regularly. He also reports on HB119, which would bring complete financial transparency to our state educational system. Oh yes, and the online checkbook has been delivered as promised by Governor Markell.

  1. On my blog I speak for myself and not for the Libertarian Party of Delaware. If I am unable to separate the two then the blog will have to go.

  2. Steve Newton says:

Tommywonk’s coverage of the Philly Folk Festival, I think, qualifies closely enough as local news and was nicely done.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

Brian… I was not meaning to imply that you speak for all Libertarians or for the Libertarian Party of Delaware. I was just criticizing you as you would me. Relax, keep up the blog so I can criticize your opinions some more!

Steve… yeah, I thought about that, and it was nicely done, but decided against it because it wasn’t political. And you can say I should have since I reference Mike Mahaffie’s trip to Hawaii. But I only did that (without direct links) because he was writing about nothing else obviously, since he was on vacation. What I have decided to do is also include direct links to the main blog in addition to the story I select, so that if the reader wants to read more of Tom’s work, they can.

  4. Steve Newton says:

I like the links to the main blogs, and I wasn’t criticizing–just suggesting.

Perhaps in the fall sometime we could have a repeat of the experiment over several weeks where other bloggers “guest host” ATHFoS (Around the Horn Friday on Sunday). Not as a permanent arrangement, because it would die out like it did before, but it did produce some interesting results.

Which, by the way, is not intended to say you have not been doing a good job with it.

  5. Having a rough time at work and brought it home with me, sorry about the attitude.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

Yeah, we have talked about that (guest hosting). It could be in the works.

  7. liberalgeek says:

At least you didn’t round anyone up, Brian. 🙂
