First Looks at Fred Cullis, DE-AL Candidate
From WDEL — Mr. Cullis is a Hockessin republican that no one has heard of apparently. From WDEL’s video — he was not happy with Castle’s vote on cap and trade, but he is making the “independent voice” noises which bears alot of watching. Traditionally, this “independent” claim by repubs means that they are a stalking horse for the usual failed policies and programs — just trying to disguise the level of lockstep he’ll get to. He has a website, with some position papers taking these basic positions:
- Energy — cap and trade has to be defeated because it is “unproven” and makes alot of claims and statements that simply are not true. He is a fan of nuclear energy and of drill baby drill.
- Federal Spending — Its all bad! Really! And Congress isn’t reading bills! Lots of exclamation points do not adequately mask the fact that here is one more repub without a basic grasp of either economics or the current state of economic play. This is a freeze spending guy. But no real solutions offered and no discussion of what Americans will live without in terms of services if he could somehow get the Congress to stop spending. Really!
- Health Care Reform — if you saw the BoehnerCare document — already roundly rejected by Congress — you’ve seen this very weak tea before.
- Immigration — more of the usual fear and loathing, but this time with a dis against Ronald Reagan’s amnesty program. But while there is the usual immigrants are the bane of our existence rhetoric, he proposes Not One Thing to address the immediate issues with immigration — as in what to do with the people already here. In this Cullis seems quite content to do the usual repub bait and switch here — lots of fear and loathing and law enforcement re: closing borders; but he is not going to disturb the business interests who badly need those immigrants to continue working here.
So the short story is — so far you are not talking about a “New Ideas” kinda guy (which are pretty much extinct in the GOP anyway) or even one who has been able to demonstrate (via these position papers anyway) a real grasp of either policy or issues. He’s got a year though to work this out, so we’ll keep a good look out.

Do you suppose he’s talking about immigrants from the other 49? Because he DOES know we’re no longer a border state, doesn’t he?
More like six months to work it out. He needs to have it together by May. The other two candidates aren’t putting position papers out yet are they? No one does the year before the election. It only gives your opponents time to pick through it while the public and even your friends are not interested until after the holidays.
So, David’s thinking is that one shouldn’t put ones positions out so that the opposition can’t research them. I guess that’s a good strategy if you know your ideas don’t work.
Ow, UI. That left a mark. 😀
That’s right. The Republican stance on ideas is, “Don’t tell anyone ’cause they might make fun of you.” Someday, if they’re lucky, Republicans will figure out that policies and positions are not some secret playbook that you don’t want the enemy to see, they’re suppossed to be the ideas by which you are going to help people and make their life better. But at this point the GOP has no interest in such nonsense.
Please nominate this man.
It is the Dems who have no concept of economics, massive unemployment, huge deficits and tax increases across the board.
Obama’s deficit is 50% larger than the entire fed budget when Reagan left office.
Spending, spending, spending. A taxpayer bill of rights is needed to restrain spending. No budget increases above population growth and inflation.
The Dems are full of nonsense with ideas which do not work and are ruining the country.

Once more, Mikey: How do you intend to avoid NCCo property tax increases? Be specific. If you can’t answer this simple question, how are you going to run for the office?
he is going to say “i want America back!!! socialism!!!! obama is the Beast!!! libila timmy!” and Im afraid people (not enough to win) will respond to it.
Mike’s the guy in the white hair here:

The best part of that link, JM, is that I had a related story in the right hand column with a picture of houses engulfed in flame with the headline “Is Your Pilot Drunk?” Good times.
“Obama’s deficit is 50% larger than the entire fed budget when Reagan left office.”
OBAMA’S deficit? Did you fucking miss the years 2001-2009? Did you notice a war of choice in Iraq that has costs BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars? Did you notice that it was he who rolled back all of the regulations that allowed us to get into this mess? Did you notice that the last balanced budget we had was with a DEMOCRAT?
And yes, raising taxes IS a way to reduce the defecit. It is fantasy to think that you can cut taxes and bring in MORE money.
I will say what I said on the other thread, again here:
What about:
– Education
– Foreign Policy
– Social Responsibility
Of course, all of these items require the ability to take a larger view of things, to go outside one’s own constipated self-interest. Which apparently Mr. Cullis is unable to do.
