Monday’s Asshats of the Day

Filed in National by on August 23, 2010

Without a doubt, today’s co-winners are doing everything they can to stoke the misinformation about President Obama’s religion.

Franklin Graham and Mitch McConnell do themselves or our country any great service by questioning the President’s religion.  They only add fuel to the fire of the anti-Islamic movement that seems to be growing in this country.  And it is shameful.

Question – who appointed these two yahoos to sit in judgment over anyone and their faith?  Graham is an Elmer Gantry wannabe, selling snake oil under the guise of saving souls.  He is only “famous” because his daddy was a preacher, having tent meetings around the country and gathering a following.  Franklin doesn’t hold a candle to his father, in terms of faith or compassion.  His comments about Obama “being born a Muslim,” and having “the seed of Islam” passed on to him from his father are just plain nonsense, and none of his business.

Problem here is that in Western society, many believe that the parents’ religion is passed from the mother to the children.  It’s been a question for eons that has caused problems in some families of mixed marriages – how do we raise the kids.  I have many friends who are raising their kids both as Christian and Jew, so that their children will get some sense of what both religions stand for.  But we have Franklin Graham, self-appointed judge of who is what religion, telling the world that Obama’s “problem” is that he was born a Muslim, even though his father had become an atheist by the time he met Obama’s mother.  Graham should just STFU.  Seriously, who does he think he is?

McConnell doesn’t help matters much by saying that he has to “take the President at his word” that he is a Christian.  Wow, let’s be a skeptic and play into the hands of all those teabaggers and Muslim haters and continue a non-story.  I’m sure the nutjobs at the anti-mosque rallies this weekend loved hearing all of this.  Senator, take some advice and just STFU.

I’d hate to see what these two experts would say if a Jew were elected President.  My guess is that we would hear stories about how we kidnap Christian children around Passover so we can make matzah, along with being responsible for killing Jesus.

This just reminds me that every time we mix politics and religion, someone gets burned at the stake.

the bottom line is – if you are not a WASP(male) – you are screwed -then burned at the stake..

look at Curley – SCCOR got mad at him coz he’s Catholic – I say – let them eat their young….

When Sam Wilson found out about Urquhart was Jewish stock – well…. I’m sure he was just thrilled

pretty soon there will be so few of the left from destroying each other over intolerance – they will have no more voice left…

    can we hurry that along??

  2. So, tomorrow’s asshat: this guy or this guy? Perhaps someone else will step up to the plate.

  3. delacrat says:

    U.I.,

Well, someone very special to Delaware did “step up to the plate”.

You’d think 9 years would be enough time to arrive at a judgement.

Biden: Too soon to call US-led war in Afghanistan a failure.

  4. Graham is right. The interpretation that you put on it is the problem. His father was not practicing but in their society that does not change the claim of Islam unless you convert to a new religion. The President has affirmed his Christianity. All Graham was explaining is why some Muslims see him as one their own and addressing some questions of the reason for the distrust. Now inspite of his statement, you are claiming that he is spreading it.

Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham, acknowledged that Obama has said he is a Christian.

“He has renounced Islam, and he has accepted Jesus,” Graham said. “That’s what he has said he has done. I cannot say that he hasn’t, so I just have to believe the president is what he has said.”

“But the confusion is because his father is a Muslim; he was born a Muslim. The Islamic world sees the president as one of theirs. That’s why Qadhafi calls him his son. They see him as a Muslim,” he added. “But, of course, the president says he is a Christian, and we just have to accept it as that.”

The problem, IMHO, is that both Islam and Christianity are proselytizing religions, and some of their practitioners think you’re not following the Word of God if you don’t go looking for new recruits. In regard to all this Muslim-bashing, what we’re seeing is how little some people like it when the shoe goes on the other foot.

  6. MJ says:

Leave it to David to be the apologist for the Muslim haters. The question, old delusional one, is who gives Graham, McConnell or anyone the right to question anyone’s faith. It’s no one’s business! Maybe when you’re at Glenn Beck’s rally on Saturday, sullying the spirit of the 1963 March on Washington, you’ll think of the words of Dr. King – that we should judge a man by the content of his character. If we do this, Graham and McConnell both FAIL miserably.

    HERE,HERE!!!MJ!!!Well put,old man! Jolly good!!!

  8. There’s supposed to be no religious test for office.

As far as Franklin Graham is concerned, what he seems to be saying is that one can’t be a Christian unless they’re born that way? What happened to born again? So what if his father is a Muslim. He barely even met his father. So Graham’s problem is that some Muslims might see him as one of theirs? Uh…so?

  9. a. price says:

    MJ, it’s no one’s business?
what country are YOU in? everyone has to pass the Christ test to get into the governing game in this “secular” country. Look at how big a deal is made over what church one goes to, or how they pray…. it shouldn’t matter… CONSTITUTIONALLY is shouldn’t matter, but it does.
It does because of the very hordes of bible humping, gun loving, islamophobes who claim to LOVE the Constitution MAKE it matter. They hold their own little Alabaman Inquisitions all the time and sinners are seen everywhere.

TurtleMan was on Meet the Press right? the REAL asshat is David Gregory for not pushing McConnell for a one word answer. “yes or know, is the president a Muslim?” MAKE him answer it. im SURE the Bags want to know if one of their leaders agrees with their Dogma.
The media that isn’t in line with the Right Wing propaganda is way too nice. We need someone with Billo’s guts asking truthful questions and pushing facts. People care about packaging, not content and right now Fixed News has shinier packaging.

  10. skippertee says:

    Who do the corporations worship?

  11. a. teabag says:

They, like all GOOD AND TRUE americans worship the all powerful, all knowing Free Market… blessing of money unto HIM. No one knows where there Free Market came from. The pro(fi)phet, Adam Smith, showed us it’s ways. We must pray to the Free Market with all of our wealth and health and HE will reward us with Republican governance and insure our rich, who are superior to us lowly peasants, stay rich, that they may give us jobs and, if we are lucky, health care.
ALL PRAISE THE WISE AND KIND FREE MARKET!!!!!
