Mike Castle Has A Short Memory

Filed in National by on September 9, 2010

We already know that Mike Castle thinks deficits are bad when Democrats are president and loves spending money unless it directly benefits Delawareans. Mike Castle is now mad and blames Obama for Mike Castle’s own vote to raise taxes.

Today, candidate for Senate Mike Castle issued the following statement in response to Chris Coons’ endorsement of President Obama’s economic plan that includes massive tax hikes and a second Stimulus Bill:

“Now is the worst time to consider raising taxes on any American. With our country facing near double digit unemployment and an economy struggling through the worst downturn in decades, increasing taxes at any level will kill jobs and slow down our recovery. Now is the time when families and investors need stability, not more debt or higher taxes.

“It is typical that Chris Coons would immediately rubber stamp the president’s call for higher taxes and a second ‘stimulus’ package, as he repeatedly raised taxes on the residents of New County Castle, refused to rule out voting for higher taxes if elected to the Senate and supported the first stimulus package that has failed to fulfill its promise of keeping unemployment below 8% or create long-term job growth.

“Delawareans know that I am the only candidate in this race who has a proven record of opposing government spending and higher taxes, and this is a fight I will continue in the U.S. Senate.”

Does Mike Castle realize that Mike Castle voted for these tax increases? The Bush tax cuts enacted in 2001 had a sunset provision in 2011. Mike Castle voted “yes.”

As far as government spending goes – could Mike Castle please show me where he voted against spending when Bush was president? With smart politicking like this I can see why Castle is proud of his important Bill Lee endorsement.

Poor Mike. Not used to having anyone challenge anything he says. And now he’s getting it from both sides.

Mike just hopes a second stimulus passes anyway so he can keep going to the photo ops with those fantastic big checks! Give’em hell Chris!

Typical Repub Party of No response–no alternatives or suggestions, if the president supports or proposes he is against it! This is not who we need representing us for the next 4 years! We want someone who will work with the administration and no matter what Mike says now, we know he won’t do it in DC!! I think the Castle campaign thought they were going to coast to a win in November-they are going to have to work alot harder than putting out pithy e-mails…..

  4. Silly argument. The House bill did not have a sunset. It was added in the Senate to bring on Di FI, Jeffords, and McCain. You can’t say that Castle wanted them to expire. That is like saying because a bill has a sunset that you never wanted it extended. It is at best a distortion at worst it shows a great misunderstanding of legislative process and history.

The House bill did not have a sunset.

When it came back to the House for reconciliation it did. You know, reconciliation? that unconstitutional, un-American tactic used by tyrants to jam a bill down our throats? Castle voted for the tax cuts to sunset.

  6. Also, reconciliation bills originate in the House. He knew very well they would sunset.

  7. You can’t say that Castle wanted them to expire.

He voted for tax cuts that expire. He can’t Obama for that. Also, the expiration had nothing to do with bringing people on board, it’s because they were passed through reconciliation. Bills passed through reconciliation are not allowed to increase the deficit. The sunsetting was to make the tax cuts look budget neutral.

  8. anon says:

If the tax cuts were paid for, sunset wouldn’t have been an issue. But CBO projected the tax cuts would cause a deficit, and boy were they right.

But if the tax cuts had been paid for, they wouldn’t have been so popular now, would they?

See, Republicans were smart enough to realize whoever tried to pay for the tax cuts would take a political hit. Enter Obama.

In the NJ this morning is a picture of a smiling Mike Castle in Bethany touting $8 mil in federal dollars for beach replenishment–since the government is in such debt, shouldn’t he have opposed this “earmark” for Delaware beaches? The hypocrisy continues!

Don’t forget, Mike’s beach house is just down the road.
