Wednesday Open Thread
I guess one good thing I can say about this week is that it’s moving quickly. It’s already time for an open thread! Tell us your deepest feelings, we’ll keep it just between us. Republicans, you stay classy! Nick Ayers, the executive director of the Republican Governors Association, tweeted a series of jokes this morning […]
The Casino Report Is In
And apparently lots of people are not happy about this result. The NJ has the story.

Celia Cohen gets the scoop: Bill Oberle has decided not to run for re-election this year, bringing to an end a 34-year legislative career that has made him the longest-serving Republican in the Delaware General Assembly. He made his plans official Tuesday evening by telling the other Republicans in the House of Representatives during a […]
“They” Are Coming After “Us”
I realize, given the build up to the Exorcist-like music, that I’m supposed to take this video very, very seriously. So why can’t I stop laughing? Oh, the drama! Oh, the horror! And… Oh, the typical threatening language and name calling. These constant Armageddon scenarios are beginning to remind me of the crazy guy […]
The GOP Is Soft On Terror
Ever since Obama became president, the suddenly chatty former VP Dick Cheney has been running around beating his chest about how strong he is on terrorism and that Obama is weak. In fact, a lot of criticism for the right is that Obama doesn’t say the word “terror” enough. Ever since the Christmas Day attempt, […]
Senator Dorgan (D-ND) Retiring
Via the WaPo — Senator Byron Dorgan announced today that he would be retiring at the end of his term:
North Dakota Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan will not run for re-election later this year, creating a major pickup opportunity for Republicans.
GOP Civil War Explodes In Florida
The Florida Senate race has been a leading indicator of the trends of the national GOP this year. When Senator Mel Martinez decided to retire, the very popular, moderate Republican Governor Charlie Crist decided to seek the seat. However, Club for Growth favorite Marco Rubio also jumped into the race. No one thought he had […]
Just For Fun
In Brit Hume’s latest attempt to justify his proselytizing, replace the word Christian with Muslim and Jesus Christ with Allah. And my sense of that Tiger is that he needs something that Christianity, especially provides and gives and offers and that is redemption and forgiveness and I was really meaning to say in those comments […]
Markell and O’Mara Unveil Recycling Effort
Today, Governor Markell and DNREC Secretary Colin O’Mara unveiled their plan to implement a statewide recycling plan that will change the way that Delawareans dispose of recyclable materials.
Recycling would remain voluntary for homes and businesses under the plan, but curbside services and special containers would be universally available. Commercial haulers and municipal governments that collect trash would be required to provide curbside pickups.

The NYT environment blog DotEarth has the story. Look at this graph: A big driver of the outbreaks of record cold […]
Rush Limbaugh Praises Health Care Reform, Unionized Hospitals
Over the Christmas holiday, Rush Limbaugh was rushed to the hospital in Hawai’i because of chest pains. He praised the treatment he got there: “Based on what happened to me here, I don’t think there is one thing wrong with the American health care system. It is working just fine, just dandy.” The SEIU points […]
Ammonia in Your Beef
And this isn’t even a story about Chinese made or processed goods.
Via the NYT — Beef trimmings were often sent off to be made into cooking oil or into pet food because the trimmings had a high risk of E. coli, salmonella and other food pathogens. A company called Beef Products, though, found a way around this — by treating this beef (gassing it basically) with ammonia. This ammoniated beef is then sold to school lunch programs and McDonalds and other processors where it is used as an extender product.
Beck Vs. Birthers
Birthers are going after Glenn Beck because he doesn’t talk about Obama’s birth certificate enough. A birther group has been flooding Glenn Beck’s radio show with phone calls: Here’s the explanation and the mission, as posted on Dec. 21 on the forum of the anti-Obama church ATLAH Worldwide: Anyone that gets through will say this: […]
