Sussex County GOP Chair Resigns

Filed in Delaware by on March 14, 2011

Sussex County GOP Chair Ron Sams has resigned.

Sussex County Republican Chairman Ron Sams announced during a meeting of the party’s executive committee tonight he was resigning in May.

Elbert Collins, of Laurel, whose wife works on the election committee, was at the meeting where the announcement was made.

“Ron simply gave a speech, indicated that he has spent sometime in Alabama, out of the area for a while. Through that and the controversy that went on in his absence he decided that it was best that he step down and that he was going to convention,” Collins said.

His vice chair Bryan Shupe also announced that he was stepping down, but cited family issues, Collins said.

In February the executive committee passed a resolution asking Sams to resign.

Collins said no one seemed surprised with the announcement.

So it looks as though the pitchfork and torches crowd led by the Fatman have won. As Bette Davis once said “Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.”

Scalp collecting is an end in itself.

  2. I thought the GOP had pretty much decided to let the Tea Partiers take over.

“he has spent sometime in Alabama”
That speaks volumes about the Delaware GOP. Not only is ‘bama tops in union busting, they get awarded state and private contracts for work here in Delaware without paying state taxes on income earned.

I think this is great and I can’t wait until the Tea Party start whining about lack of funds. Unless they really expect the RINOs and the Greenville cocktail party set to open their checkbooks?

Thank you Tea-Bggerz – you have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!

The teabgaz think that Christine O’Donnell has opened up a money gusher that they can tap and live off of, free from the condescension of the Greenville set.

BTW – GOP reaction is interesting.

Jud Bennett thinks that the DE GOP can forget about winning statewide elections for a long long time. (I guess he is now a communist, or Mexican, or Mexican communist.)
    ,

“Jud – I was raised in a staunch Republican home, registered as a Repub @ age 21 and changed my registration only when my party couldn’t field a viable candidate for Gov. I decided to change my registration because I believed that one Dem Primary candidate was absolutely unfit and viewed the actual Gov race as the Dem Primary.

Now, in the face of the fractionalized breakdown of the party, I doubt that there is any way the Repub party can be reunited – Sussex Co in particular, DE in general or … Nationally. A comprehensive examination of the several local factions would probably reveal some small ideal that could be embraced BUT, given the antics of the radical and disruptive factions in the Sussex Co Republican Party I doubt mainstream Repubs would say that any one or any combination of the factions represent their views or speak for them. And, after 40 years as a Repub, it is a tragically sad demise to witness. The Repubs have become their own worst enemies and all the Democrats have to do is sit silently and wait. So far, the Repub course and rhetoric appears to be self destructive. I believe the “new wave Repubs” had their 10 mins of fame in 2010, I don’t see the new wave prevailing …

    Rich Anthony–Lewes”

Well folks, there you have it–The Grand Ole Party (GOP) in Delaware ain’t so Grand any more. Will a leader emerge who can reunite the party? Since compromise is the essence of Democracy, I’m not sure the Republicans will be able to win elections ever again in this state with this limited and narrow philosophy. Time will tell. So be it for now.

    Respectfully Submitted,

An upstate Republican told me last week that, outside of John Burris, the state party gets about 1% of its donations from Sussex County. I have for months, perhaps years, challenged the downstate firebrands about where they would get their money. I have yet to get a response.

If they’re waiting for O’Donnell, they might as well wait for Godot. Someone who burned through $6 million in less than 6 weeks has too big a jones to feed to share anything with anyone.
